Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Roses

“Stop her!”” Vanessa screamed as her ten-year-old stepdaughter tore apart the rose wall behind the altar.

Every guest at the luxury wedding turned toward the little girl in the flower-girl dress. White and blush petals scattered across the cream aisle. Somewhere near the front row, a champagne glass struck the floor and shattered.

But Chloe Bennett didn't stop.

She grabbed another handful of roses and ripped until the decorative branches bent beneath her trembling fingers.

“Chloe, what are you doing?!”” Adrian Bennett shouted.

The forty-year-old groom rushed forward, his polished black shoes sliding slightly on the smooth aisle. His tuxedo jacket pulled tight across his shoulders as he reached for his daughter.

Chloe twisted away from him.

“She’s in there!”” she cried.

For one suspended second, the entire wedding seemed to hold its breath.

Vanessa stood beneath the elegant altar, her white gown spread around her like a cloud. At thirty-three, she looked flawless, from her sculpted hairstyle to the diamond necklace resting against her collarbone.

Then Chloe pointed at the opening behind the flowers.

A pale, trembling hand emerged between two torn sections of the rose wall.

A woman gasped.

Someone whispered, “Oh, my God.””

Adrian stopped moving.

“What is that?”” he asked.

No one answered.

Chloe fell to her knees and clawed away the remaining flowers. The artificial frame shuddered, then collapsed outward enough to expose a narrow space concealed behind the elaborate decoration.

Inside, a woman lay curled on the floor.

Her dark hair clung to her damp forehead. Her pale face was streaked with tears, and her elegant dress was wrinkled and dirty. She looked so weak that even lifting her head seemed to cost her everything.

Chloe made a sound that was almost a scream.

“Mom?””

The woman opened her eyes.

“Chloe?”” she whispered.

The little girl threw herself forward, wrapping both arms around her mother's neck.

“Mommy! Mommy, I found you!””

Serena struggled to sit up, her thin arms shaking as she held her daughter. Chloe buried her face against Serena's shoulder, sobbing so violently that she could barely breathe.

Adrian stared at them.

He knew that face.

He had spent years trying not to remember it.

“Serena?”” he whispered.

His former wife looked up at him. Her eyes were swollen, her lips dry, and fear flickered across her expression as though she expected someone to drag her back into the hidden space.

“Adrian,” she breathed.

He dropped beside her immediately.

“Don't move. You're hurt.”” He slipped his arm behind her shoulders.

“Can you stand? Serena, look at me.””

She tried to answer but coughed instead.

“Somebody call an ambulance!”” Adrian shouted toward the guests.

Several people reached for their phones. Others remained frozen, staring at the woman who had somehow been concealed inside the wedding decorations.

Vanessa took one step away from the altar.

Then another.

Adrian noticed.

He looked up at his bride, the woman he had planned to marry in front of their families and friends, and saw something he'd never expected to see on her face.

Not confusion.

Not concern.

Recognition.

“Vanessa?”” he asked.

She opened her mouth, but no sound emerged.

Serena clutched Chloe's hand.

“Don't let her take me,” she whispered.

Adrian tightened his hold around Serena's shoulders.

“Nobody is taking you anywhere.””

Serena looked at him, then at Chloe, who was still crying against her chest.

With the little strength she had left, she raised her head.

“She locked me in here,” Serena whispered.

“So she could marry your father.””

The words landed harder than any scream.

Adrian's face went rigid.

“My father?”” he repeated.

Behind him, the guests began murmuring. The best man lowered his phone. Adrian's aunt covered her mouth. At the front of the aisle, Vanessa's bouquet slipped from her fingers and landed among the scattered petals.

Adrian slowly turned toward his bride.

Vanessa stood perfectly still, her face drained of color.

For the first time since he had met her, she looked as though she had no idea what to say.

And Adrian realized that whatever had happened behind that wall, his wedding had never been what he believed it was.
