Chapter 4: The Man With the Brass Key
“But the person who locked Serena inside wasn't Vanessa.””
Malcolm Bennett's words silenced the wedding venue.
Adrian stood beside the ruined rose wall, his father's brass key glinting between them. Chloe clung to Serena, who struggled to remain upright against the collapsed floral frame. Around them, guests in elegant formalwear stared at Malcolm as though the man who had funded the wedding had suddenly become a stranger.
Adrian took one step toward his father.
“Explain what you mean.””
Malcolm slipped the key into his jacket pocket.
“Not here.””
Adrian laughed once, without humor.
“You walked into my wedding, admitted there's a door behind the flowers, and told me someone else locked my former wife inside it. You don't get to decide where this conversation happens.””
“Adrian, lower your voice.””
“No. You lower yours and tell me why Serena was hidden behind a wall you approved.””
Malcolm's expression hardened. He had spent forty years building a reputation as a man who never lost control in public. Even now, he adjusted his cuff links before answering.
“I approved the floral installation. I didn't approve what happened behind it.””
Serena lifted her head.
“You knew about the space.””
Malcolm looked at her.
“I knew the venue had a service compartment behind the decorative partition.””
“You knew there was a lock.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew someone could be trapped inside?””
Malcolm hesitated.
That hesitation frightened Adrian more than a denial would have.
Chloe pulled her mother's hand closer to her chest.
“Grandpa, why didn't you help Mommy?””
Malcolm's face softened for a moment.
“Sweetheart, I didn't know she was there.””
“Then why did you bring the key?””
Nobody moved.
Malcolm looked down at the little girl.
“I brought it because I was told the compartment needed to be opened after the ceremony.””
“By who?”” Adrian demanded.
Malcolm's eyes shifted toward Vanessa.
She stood near the altar, gripping her bouquet so tightly that the stems bent between her fingers.
“Vanessa?”” Adrian asked.
She shook her head quickly.
“Don't look at me. I didn't tell him to bring anything.””
Malcolm's jaw tightened.
“You told me the decorations had to remain closed until the ceremony ended.””
“I said the floral installation wasn't ready.””
“You specifically asked me to keep this key.””
“Because the frame was unstable!””
“Stop lying!”” Serena cried.
Her voice broke on the final word. She tried to rise, but her knees buckled.
Adrian caught her before she struck the floor.
“Easy,” he said, lowering her carefully.
“Don't try to stand.””
Chloe knelt beside her mother and began stroking her hair.
“It's okay, Mommy. Daddy's here.””
Serena pressed her lips against Chloe's forehead.
Adrian looked up at Malcolm.
“My daughter heard someone crying yesterday. Vanessa told her not to say anything. Serena says she was locked inside. And now you're telling me you brought a key because someone instructed you to keep that compartment closed.””
Malcolm looked toward the guests.
“Everyone needs to step back.””
“No,” Adrian said.
“Everyone needs to hear the truth.””
A woman in the second row lowered her phone slightly.
“Mr. Bennett,” she said cautiously, “shouldn't the police handle this?””
“They will,” Adrian replied.
Vanessa immediately seized the opening.
“Exactly. The police can investigate instead of everyone making accusations. Serena could have entered that space herself. She could have planned this entire scene.””
Chloe looked up in disbelief.
“Mommy couldn't even stand up!””
“Chloe,” Vanessa snapped, “you don't understand adult situations.””
Adrian rose slowly.
“Don't speak to my daughter like that again.””
Vanessa's lips parted, but Malcolm interrupted.
“Vanessa, enough.””
She turned toward him.
“You promised me you would handle this.””
The words slipped out quietly, but several people heard them.
Malcolm went still.
Adrian stared at Vanessa.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“I meant the wedding arrangements.””
“No, you didn't.””
Malcolm stepped closer to her.
“You need to be careful.””
Vanessa gave a short, bitter laugh.
“Careful? I've been careful for months.””
Serena covered her mouth.
Adrian felt his heartbeat hammer against his ribs.
“Months?”” he repeated.
Vanessa looked at him, and for the first time, her expression carried no affection at all.
“You wanted a perfect family, Adrian. You wanted someone who could make Chloe happy, someone who could help you forget the woman who destroyed your marriage. I gave you everything you asked for.””
“I asked you to love my daughter.””
“I do!””
“Then why did you lie to her about her mother?””
Vanessa's face flushed.
“Because Serena was going to ruin everything!””
Malcolm grabbed her arm.
“That's enough.””
She jerked free.
“Don't touch me!””
A shocked murmur passed through the guests.
Malcolm's face darkened.
“You have no idea what you're saying.””
“Oh, I know exactly what I'm saying.”” Vanessa pointed toward Serena.
“She wasn't supposed to come back. We agreed on that.””
Adrian's entire body went rigid.
“We?””
Vanessa looked at Malcolm.
Her silence answered him.
Adrian turned toward his father.
“Tell me she's lying.””
Malcolm didn't respond.
“Dad!””
Before Malcolm could speak, the venue coordinator hurried toward them.
“Mr. Bennett, the ambulance has arrived. But there's something else you need to know.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
She held up a small tablet.
“We checked the security system because of the incident. The camera overlooking the service entrance recorded someone moving the floral partition early this morning.””
“Who?”” Adrian asked.
The coordinator swallowed.
“The footage shows Ms. Vanessa entering the service area with Mr. Malcolm Bennett.””
Vanessa's face lost every trace of color.
Malcolm slowly closed his eyes.
Adrian looked from his bride to his father.
Neither denied it.
Then the coordinator tapped the screen and turned the tablet toward him.
“There is one more recording,” she whispered.
“It shows who entered that hidden space first.””
The image appeared.

And Adrian immediately recognized the person carrying Serena toward the door.
It was his father.
