Chapter 2: The Bride Who Knew Too Much

“Tell me she's lying.””

Adrian's voice cut through the stunned silence.

He remained on his knees beside Serena, one arm supporting her while Chloe clung to her mother's hand. His wedding guests watched from the cream-colored aisle, their faces sharp with disbelief beneath the bright daylight streaming through the venue's tall windows.

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she bent down, picked up her bouquet, and brushed a loose rose petal from the front of her gown.

The small gesture looked absurdly ordinary.

“Adrian,” she said, forcing a smile, “this is obviously some kind of misunderstanding.””

Serena flinched at the sound of her voice.

Chloe noticed.

“Don't talk to her!”” the girl shouted.

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Chloe, you need to calm down. You're frightening everyone.””

“You're the one who frightened my mom!””

“That's enough,” Adrian said.

He hadn't raised his voice, but the warning in it made Vanessa stop.

Adrian looked at Serena again. Her breathing was shallow, and her fingers trembled against his sleeve.

“How did you get here?”” he asked gently.

“Who brought you inside?””

Serena swallowed.

“I tried to leave.””

“Leave where?””

She glanced toward the rose wall.

“Behind there. I couldn't get past the flowers. The frame was locked into place.””

Adrian stared at the narrow opening.

The decoration covered nearly the entire wall behind the altar. From the guests' seats, it appeared to be nothing more than an elaborate floral installation. No one could have guessed that the structure concealed enough space for a person to crouch inside.

“You were trapped behind the decorations?”” Adrian asked.

Serena nodded.

“How long?””

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

The bride stepped forward before Serena could respond.

“She needs medical attention,” Vanessa said.

“We shouldn't be interrogating her in front of everyone.””

“Then stop answering questions for her,” Adrian replied.

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

A few guests exchanged looks.

Adrian had never spoken to her like that before. Throughout their engagement, Vanessa had presented herself as patient, affectionate, and endlessly understanding of the complicated relationship between him and Chloe.

She had remembered his coffee order. She had attended Chloe's school performances. She had even helped Adrian choose the flowers for the wedding.

White roses, she had insisted, because they symbolized a fresh beginning.

Now Adrian looked at the torn flowers surrounding Serena and felt something cold settle in his stomach.

“Why did you scream at Chloe before anyone knew there was someone behind the wall?”” he asked.

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“You knew something was there. You told her to stop before you even saw what she was doing.””

“I was worried she would ruin the wedding.””

“My daughter was crying and tearing apart a wall. You weren't worried about her.””

Vanessa looked toward the guests, searching for support.

“Everyone can see how emotional this has become,” she said.

“Adrian, please. Let's handle this privately.””

Serena suddenly gripped his wrist.

“No,” she whispered.

He leaned closer.

“What's wrong?””

“Don't let her near Chloe.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“That's ridiculous. Chloe is my family.””

“No,” Serena said, her voice shaking.

“You wanted her away from me.””

Chloe lifted her head.

“Daddy, she told me my mom didn't want me anymore.””

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

“What did you say?””

Chloe wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“She said Mommy left because she didn't love me. She said if I kept asking about her, you'd get tired of me too.””

Vanessa stared at the girl.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From my own mother?”” Adrian demanded.

“From a woman who abandoned her!””

Serena recoiled as if Vanessa had struck her.

Adrian slowly stood, keeping one hand on Serena's shoulder to steady her.

“You told me Serena chose to leave,” he said.

“She did.””

“You told me she moved away and didn't want contact.””

“She made that choice.””

“Then why is she inside a wall at my wedding?””

Vanessa's composure cracked.

“She wasn't supposed to be here!””

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Silence swallowed the room.

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Adrian stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

She took a breath and tried to recover.

“I meant she wasn't supposed to disrupt the ceremony. Someone must have brought her here to cause a scene.””

“Who?”” Adrian asked.

Vanessa didn't answer.

A venue coordinator approached cautiously, her phone in one hand.

“Mr. Bennett,” she said, “we've called emergency services. The ambulance is on its way.””

“Thank you. Please ask everyone to give Serena some room.””

The coordinator nodded and turned toward the guests.

As people shifted away, Chloe leaned close to her mother's ear.

“Mommy, I did what you told me.””

Serena's exhausted eyes filled with tears.

“You remembered?””

Chloe nodded.

“You told me to look for the roses that didn't smell like roses.””

Adrian looked down at his daughter.

“What does that mean, sweetheart?””

Chloe pointed toward the damaged wall.

“Those flowers smelled different. And yesterday, when I walked past them, I heard someone crying.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Adrian saw it.

So did Serena.

Chloe reached into the small pocket sewn into her flower-girl dress and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I found this under the table where they kept the decorations,” she said.

“I was going to show you after the wedding, Daddy.””

Adrian carefully unfolded it.

Inside was a handwritten message, creased and smudged at the edges.

There were only eight words.

*IF YOU WANT YOUR MOTHER ALIVE, FIND THE ROSE WALL.*

Adrian read it twice.

Then he looked at Serena.

“Who wrote this?””

Serena's lips parted.

Before she could answer, Vanessa stepped forward and reached for the paper.

“Give me that.””

Adrian pulled it out of her reach.

For the first time, Vanessa wasn't pretending to smile.

She was staring at the note as if it had just exposed something far more dangerous than a hidden woman.

And from the way Serena began to tremble, Adrian understood that the message wasn't the only secret his bride had brought to the altar.
