Chapter 8: The Evidence Beneath the Altar
The police officers entered the wedding venue as Adrian held the silver key beneath the bright afternoon light.
One officer began speaking with the venue coordinator. Another photographed the torn rose wall, the fallen floral frame, and the narrow compartment where Serena had been trapped.
Adrian barely noticed.
His attention remained fixed on Vanessa.
“You said the evidence is inside this building,” he told her.
“Where?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know exactly.””
“You just said you knew where your mother hid it.””
“I said I knew the kind of place she would choose.””
Adrian looked toward the service entrance.
“Then start explaining.””
Vanessa glanced at Malcolm.
He stood beside the altar, watching the officers with an expression of barely controlled fury.
“Your mother used to say that people hide things in beautiful places because nobody thinks to look beneath them,” Vanessa said.
“She believed your father searched every office, every bank account, and every house he controlled. So she chose somewhere ordinary.””
“The wedding venue?””
“No. This building used to belong to your family.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
“Before it became a wedding venue, it was part of your grandfather's estate. Your father sold the property years ago, but he kept the original architectural plans.””
Malcolm's head snapped toward her.
“Stop talking.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Your mother visited this place shortly before she disappeared. She told my mother she had hidden something beneath the original altar.””
Adrian looked toward the elegant platform where he had stood that morning, preparing to marry Vanessa.
Beneath it, white roses had been arranged around polished cream-colored steps.
“Why would she hide something here?”” he asked.
“Because the altar was built over an old storage compartment.””
The venue coordinator approached, having overheard the conversation.
“There is a service cavity beneath the platform,” she said cautiously.
“It's used to access electrical wiring. The original plans show a removable panel.””
Adrian turned toward her.
“Can you open it?””
“I can ask maintenance to check.””
“Please do.””
Malcolm moved immediately.
“No one is opening anything.””
A police officer stepped between him and the platform.
“Sir, you'll need to remain where you are.””
Malcolm looked offended.
“This property belongs to the venue.””
“Then you shouldn't have a problem with us documenting it.””
Adrian watched his father struggle to contain his anger.
For the first time, Malcolm looked less like a powerful businessman and more like a man who had run out of places to hide.
A maintenance worker arrived carrying a toolbox. Under the officer's supervision, he examined the edge of the altar platform and found a narrow metal panel concealed beneath the decorative trim.
He removed two screws.
The panel shifted outward.
Inside was a shallow compartment containing a dust-covered metal box.
Adrian's breath caught.
The worker carefully lifted it onto the platform.
A small brass latch secured the lid.
Adrian took the silver key from his pocket.
It fit.
He turned it.
The latch clicked.
Inside the box lay a bundle of letters, several photographs, a small digital storage drive, and a thick envelope sealed with yellowing tape.
Adrian picked up the first photograph.
It showed his mother standing beside a younger Malcolm in front of a desk covered with papers. Eleanor's expression was tense. Malcolm's hand rested on a folder marked with the name of the family trust.
On the back, someone had written a date.
Three days before Eleanor disappeared.
Adrian's fingers tightened around the photograph.
“That's impossible,” Malcolm said.
Adrian looked at him.
“What is?””
“My mother died before this venue was built,” he replied.
“You told me that.””
Malcolm's face darkened.
“The photograph could have been taken anywhere.””
“Then why is the original property plan inside the box?””
Malcolm didn't answer.
Adrian picked up the envelope.
His mother's handwriting covered the front.
For Adrian. Only if Malcolm has told you I am dead.
His eyes burned.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter several pages long.
He read the first paragraph silently, then began again aloud.
My beloved son, if you are reading this, someone has finally uncovered the truth. I need you to understand that I never abandoned you. I left because I discovered that your father had used your name to conceal money taken from the family trust.
Adrian stopped.
“My name?””
He continued reading.
When I confronted him, he told me that if I went to the authorities, you would be blamed for the missing money. He had created documents suggesting that you had approved transactions you knew nothing about.
Adrian looked up at Malcolm.
“You forged my signature?””
Malcolm's silence was answer enough.
The police officer moved closer.
“Mr. Bennett, do you have documents supporting that allegation?””
Adrian handed him the letter.
“There are more papers in the box.””
The officer began examining the contents.
Vanessa stood near the altar, crying silently.
Adrian continued reading.
I trusted one person to help me protect you. Serena knew what I had discovered. She promised to keep the evidence safe until you were old enough to understand. But there was someone else I feared.
The next line had been underlined twice.
Someone who had grown up believing that our family owed her a debt.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
The letter continued.
If that person ever comes into your life, do not mistake her knowledge of your pain for love.
Adrian's chest tightened.
He turned to Vanessa.
“Did you know about this letter?””
She nodded faintly.
“My mother told me Eleanor had left something behind. She didn't know where it was. I searched for it for years.””
“And then you found me.””
“Yes.””
“Was any part of our relationship real?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“At first, I wanted answers. But then I got to know you. I saw how you cared for Chloe. I saw the man you were, and I fell in love with you.””
“Then you found out Serena was alive.””
Her silence confirmed it.
Adrian lowered the letter.
“Why did you lock her away?””
“Malcolm said Serena had the original documents. He told me that if she gave them to you, the police would investigate everyone involved, including me.””
“So you decided to make sure she couldn't speak.””
“I panicked.””
“You had a choice.””
Vanessa looked at Chloe, who had returned to the venue entrance after checking on Serena.
“I know.””
Chloe stepped forward, her flower-girl dress covered in dust and rose petals.
“Daddy?””
Adrian immediately knelt beside her.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
She held out a small folded paper.
“I found this in Mommy's pocket when the paramedics moved her.””
Adrian opened it.
It contained a short message written in Serena's handwriting.
The letter is only half the truth. Look at the final page of the original trust agreement.
Adrian turned back to the box.
The officer was already examining the documents.
“There's an agreement here,” the officer said.
“But the final page appears to have been removed.””
Adrian stared at the empty space between the remaining pages.
Then Malcolm spoke.
“Because the final page would prove that I wasn't the only person who signed it.””
Vanessa went rigid.
Adrian turned slowly.
“Who signed it with you?””
Malcolm looked directly at his son.
“Your mother.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No. She wouldn't have helped you steal money.””
“She didn't.””
“Then why did she sign?””
Malcolm's expression became unreadable.
“Because the trust wasn't created to protect our family.””
May you like
He paused.
“It was created to protect someone who wasn't supposed to exist.””
