Chapter 6: The Secret About Adrian's Mother

“My mother?””

Adrian barely recognized his own voice.

The recording device rested in his palm, its red light still blinking. Around him, the wedding guests had fallen silent again. Even the paramedics paused near the entrance, where Serena lay on the stretcher with Chloe holding her hand.

Malcolm stared at the device.

“Turn it off.””

Adrian pressed the button.

The recording stopped.

“No,” Adrian said.

“You're going to explain what that means.””

His father straightened his jacket, attempting to recover the authority that had controlled every room he entered for decades.

“This is not the place.””

“You keep saying that. You keep deciding what I should know and when I should know it.””

“Because you don't understand the consequences.””

“Consequences of what? My mother?””

Malcolm's expression tightened.

“Your mother made choices that hurt this family.””

Adrian shook his head.

“My mother died when I was sixteen.””

“That's what you were told.””

The words seemed to drain the air from the room.

Adrian took a step backward.

“What did you say?””

Malcolm glanced toward the guests.

“Your mother was very ill. The circumstances surrounding her death were complicated.””

“You attended her funeral.””

“Yes.””

“I watched you stand beside her casket.””

“Yes.””

“You told me she died in the hospital.””

Malcolm looked down.

“She disappeared before that.””

Adrian felt the recording device slip in his sweaty palm.

“No. You're lying.””

“I wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

“From the truth about her.””

Adrian's face twisted with disbelief.

For twenty-four years, he had carried a photograph of his mother in his wallet. In it, she wore a yellow dress and stood beside him at his high school graduation, her hand resting proudly on his shoulder.

He remembered the hospital visits.

He remembered the funeral.

He remembered his father sitting at the kitchen table afterward, telling him that grief was something a man had to endure quietly.

Every memory had seemed solid.

Now each one felt like a room with a locked door.

“You told me she was buried in Atlanta,” Adrian whispered.

Malcolm didn't answer.

“Dad, where is she?””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Adrian, don't do this.””

He turned toward her.

“Don't do what?””

“Destroy yourself over something you can't change.””

His expression hardened.

“You knew?””

Vanessa looked at Malcolm.

That was enough.

Adrian took a slow breath.

“How long have you known?””

“It's not what you think,” Vanessa said.

“Then tell me what it is.””

She pressed her bouquet against her waist.

“Your father told me your family had secrets. He said Serena was threatening to expose something that would destroy you.””

“What something?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't know the details.””

“But you knew Serena was alive.””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

“And you helped hide her.””

“I thought she was dangerous!””

“So you locked her in a room?””

“I didn't know he would leave her there!””

Malcolm snapped, “You agreed to the plan.””

Vanessa whirled toward him.

“You told me it would only take an hour!””

“And you said you would keep Chloe away from the flowers.””

“I tried!””

Adrian stared at them.

The argument sounded less like a misunderstanding and more like two people trying to decide which one would take the blame.

He raised the recording device.

“I'm giving this to the police. Both of you can explain the plan to them.””

Malcolm stepped toward him.

“You cannot hand that over.””

“Watch me.””

“You have no idea what that recording could do to your family.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You've already done enough to my family.””

A paramedic approached.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to transport Serena now.””

Adrian turned toward the entrance.

“Is she stable?””

“She needs further evaluation. She's severely weakened, and we're concerned about dehydration. We can't determine the full extent of her condition here.””

“I'm coming with her.””

Chloe looked relieved.

“Daddy, hurry.””

Adrian bent and kissed the top of her head.

“I'll be right there.””

As he rose, Malcolm caught his arm.

“Adrian, listen to me. Whatever Serena tells you, remember that she was involved in this too.””

Adrian pulled away.

“She was found trapped behind my wedding altar.””

“You don't know why she was there.””

“Neither do you, apparently, unless you're lying about that too.””

Malcolm's face hardened.

“You're making a mistake.””

“No,” Adrian said.

“I made a mistake when I trusted you to tell me the truth.””

He followed the stretcher toward the entrance, but Serena called his name.

“Adrian, wait.””

He hurried to her side.

Her eyes were open, and her fingers trembled against Chloe's hand.

“Your mother left something for you,” Serena whispered.

Adrian crouched beside her.

“What?””

“A letter. She gave it to me years ago.””

“Where is it?””

Serena looked toward Malcolm.

“He took it from me this morning.””

Adrian slowly turned around.

His father stood beside the rose wall, his face unreadable.

“Dad,” Adrian said, “give me the letter.””

Malcolm shook his head.

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because it contains things you were never supposed to know.””

“About my mother?””

“Yes.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Then I deserve to read it.””

Malcolm looked at Vanessa.

She had stopped moving. Her bouquet hung at her side, and her eyes were fixed on the inside pocket of Malcolm's jacket.

Adrian noticed.

He reached toward his father's jacket.

Malcolm caught his wrist.

“Don't.””

“Let go.””

“Adrian, if you read that letter, you will understand why Serena had to disappear.””

“Had to?””

Malcolm's grip tightened.

For the first time, Adrian saw genuine fear in his father's eyes.

Not fear of embarrassment.

Not fear of losing his reputation.

Fear of what the letter contained.

Adrian wrenched his arm free and reached into the jacket pocket.

Malcolm shoved him backward.

The guests gasped.

The older man stumbled against the broken floral frame, and a folded envelope slipped from his jacket onto the cream aisle.

Adrian snatched it up.

His name was written across the front in handwriting he recognized instantly.

His mother's handwriting.

His fingers shook as he opened it.

Inside was a single page, yellowed at the edges.

The first line read:

My dearest Adrian, if you're reading this, your father has finally failed to keep the truth from you.

Adrian swallowed hard and continued.

I did not abandon you. I was forced to leave because I discovered what your father had done to our family. And the woman who helped me escape was...

The page ended there.

Adrian stared at the unfinished sentence.

“Where's the rest?”” he demanded.

Malcolm said nothing.

Adrian looked up.

“Where is the rest of the letter?””

Vanessa suddenly covered her mouth.

Serena began crying on the stretcher.

Then Malcolm spoke, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Ask Vanessa who your mother was trying to protect.””

Adrian turned toward his bride.

She was staring at him with tears streaming down her face.

And when she finally spoke, the words destroyed the last piece of the wedding he had believed in.

“Adrian,” Vanessa whispered, “your mother wasn't trying to protect you from your father.””

May you like

She looked toward Serena.

“She was trying to protect you from me.””
