Chapter 10: The Call From the Dead
Adrian stared at the phone glowing beneath the torn rose wall.
*MOM.*
For several seconds, he couldn't move.
The caller ID displayed his mother's name exactly as he remembered it from the old family phone records. Eleanor Bennett. The woman he had mourned for twenty-four years.
The woman whose handwriting had appeared in a letter hidden beneath the altar. The woman whose signature had reserved this venue for a wedding she supposedly could never have known about.
The phone kept ringing.
“Daddy?”” Chloe whispered.
Adrian looked down at his daughter. Her flower-girl dress was stained with dust, and a white rose remained clenched in her small fist.
“Stay with the officer, sweetheart.””
“Is it Grandma?””
He swallowed.
“I don't know.””
He crouched beside the fallen frame and reached between the flowers. The phone was an older model, its casing scratched, its screen cracked near one corner. It vibrated against his palm.
He answered.
“Hello?””
At first, there was only breathing.
Then a woman's voice spoke.
“Adrian?””
His knees nearly gave way.
He knew that voice.
He had heard it in childhood dreams, in old recordings, and in the quiet moments when he wished he could ask his mother one more question.
“Mom?””
A shaky breath came through the speaker.
“Oh, my baby.””
Adrian pressed the phone against his ear.
“Where are you? Are you alive?””
“I don't have much time.””
“Where are you?””
“Listen to me. You must take Chloe away from that venue. Don't let Malcolm leave with her.””
Adrian looked toward his father.
Malcolm had gone completely still.
“Mom, Dad is right here. He says you disappeared. He says—”
“Your father lied about many things,” Eleanor interrupted.
“But he wasn't the only one.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Who else?””
A pause.
Then Eleanor whispered, “Vanessa.””
Adrian turned toward the entrance, where police officers had taken his bride aside for questioning.
“She's already confessed that she helped hide Serena.””
“No. She hasn't told you everything.””
“Then tell me.””
Eleanor's breathing grew uneven.
“The trust was never meant to make Chloe rich. It was meant to keep her safe. The money was only protection. The real evidence is in the sealed envelope.””
Adrian looked at the booking document.
“What envelope?””
“The one your mother left for you.””
“You are my mother.””
“I know, sweetheart.””
The familiar tenderness in her voice almost broke him.
“Then why did you leave me?””
A long silence followed.
When Eleanor spoke again, her voice was thick with tears.
“Because Malcolm told me that if I stayed, you would be arrested for crimes you didn't commit. He had forged documents using your name. I thought leaving would protect you until I could prove what he had done.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury you.””
“I know, Adrian.””
“You let me grow up thinking you abandoned me.””
Her breath caught.
“I am sorry.””
He pressed his free hand against his mouth.
For twenty-four years, he had imagined what he would say if he ever saw his mother again. He had rehearsed questions in his mind. He had imagined anger, relief, disbelief.
He had never imagined hearing an apology through a phone while standing beside the ruins of his wedding.
“Where are you now?”” he asked.
“Somewhere safe. I couldn't come back until the evidence was secured.””
“Then come back now.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because someone has been watching me.””
Adrian glanced around the bright venue. Police officers moved between the guests, documenting the scene. Chloe stood near the entrance, holding an officer's hand.
“Who?””
Before Eleanor could answer, another voice came through the phone.
A man's voice.
“Eleanor, we have to go.””
Adrian recognized it immediately.
Malcolm.
He turned so quickly that the phone nearly slipped from his hand.
His father stood beside the altar, staring at the device with a face drained of color.
“You said you didn't know where she was,” Adrian whispered.
Malcolm said nothing.
Adrian raised the phone.
“Mom, can you hear me? Is Dad with you?””
“Yes,” Eleanor replied.
Adrian's heart hammered.
“Why?””
“Because he finally agreed to tell the truth.””
Malcolm took one step forward.
“Adrian, give me the phone.””
“No.””
“Please.””
The word stunned Adrian more than any confession could have.
His father had never begged him for anything.
“Put her on speaker,” Malcolm said.
“There are things I need to say.””
Adrian hesitated, then tapped the screen.
Eleanor's voice filled the wedding venue.
“Malcolm?””
“I'm here.””
“You promised me you would stop hiding the truth.””
“I know.””
“You promised you would tell Adrian everything.””
“I will.””
“You said that twenty-four years ago.””
Malcolm lowered his head.
“I know.””
Adrian stared at them both.
“What is happening?””
Eleanor took a breath.
“Your father found me three days ago. He finally admitted that the documents proving his fraud were still hidden in the family records. He agreed to help the authorities recover them.””
“Why now?””
“Because Vanessa contacted him. She told him Serena had found the evidence and intended to reveal it at your wedding.””
Adrian looked toward the entrance.
Vanessa was watching him from beside the police officer.
“So the wedding was a trap?””
“No,” Eleanor said.
“The wedding was supposed to be the end of the lies.””
A sudden commotion interrupted her.
One officer hurried toward the venue entrance. Another spoke urgently into his radio.
Adrian turned.
“What is it?””
The officer beside Chloe looked toward the parking area.
“Sir, we have a problem. A vehicle has just arrived, and the driver is asking for the child named in the trust.””
Adrian's blood ran cold.
“What vehicle?””
“A black SUV. The driver says he has legal documents authorizing him to take Chloe into his custody.””
Chloe grabbed the officer's hand.
“Daddy!””
Adrian rushed to her.
“No one is taking my daughter.””
He pulled Chloe close and looked at Malcolm.
“You said someone would come for her.””
Malcolm's face had become ashen.
“I didn't think it would happen today.””
Adrian stared at him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected someone would try to claim the trust.””
“Who?””
Malcolm looked toward Vanessa.
She had stopped crying.
Instead, she watched the entrance with an expression that looked almost like relief.
Adrian felt a new wave of horror.
“Vanessa?””
She raised her chin.
“You don't understand what the trust really contains.””
“Then explain it.””
She glanced at Chloe.
“The money is only a small part of it. The trust gives the beneficiary control over the original family company records. Those records prove who committed the fraud, who concealed it, and who benefited from it.””
Adrian tightened his arms around his daughter.
“And you want the trust.””
“I wanted the truth.””
“You locked Serena in a room to get it.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“I wanted the documents before your father destroyed them!””
Malcolm snapped, “You were the one who hired the driver.””
Vanessa went silent.
Adrian looked at the police officer.
“Keep my daughter with you. Nobody leaves with her unless you've verified every document.””
The officer nodded and moved Chloe behind the security line.
Then the phone crackled.
Eleanor's voice returned.
“Adrian, listen carefully. The person at the entrance isn't coming for the money.””
Adrian stared at the doorway.
“Then what does he want?””
Eleanor whispered six words.
“He wants to silence the beneficiary.””
The call abruptly disconnected.
At the same moment, the black SUV's rear door opened.
A tall Black man in a dark suit stepped out, carrying a leather briefcase. He walked toward the venue with the calm confidence of someone who expected everyone to obey him.
Two officers intercepted him at the entrance.
He handed them a document.
Then he pointed directly at Chloe.
“I am here to take custody of the beneficiary under the authority of the trust's original executor.””
Adrian stepped in front of his daughter.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
“My name is Daniel Cross.””
He opened the briefcase and removed a photograph.
It showed Eleanor Bennett standing beside him outside a courthouse.
Alive.
And on the back, in Eleanor's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:
If anything happens to me, Daniel Cross is the only person you can trust.
Daniel looked past Adrian toward the broken rose wall.
Then he said something that made Malcolm collapse into a nearby chair.
“Your mother is alive,” Daniel said.
“But she isn't the person who arranged this wedding.””
He turned toward Vanessa.
“She is.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“No,” she whispered.
Daniel placed a second document on the nearest table.
It was a signed statement, dated six months earlier.
The signature belonged to Eleanor Bennett.
And beneath it was a confession that changed everything.
Eleanor had authorized the wedding, the revelation of the trust, and the gathering of every person involved because she wanted the evidence exposed in public.
But the final paragraph stated that she had deliberately concealed one fact from Adrian.
The trust's second beneficiary wasn't Chloe.
It had never been Chloe.
The document named the true beneficiary in bold letters.
*VANESSA BENNETT.*
Adrian stared at the page.
Vanessa shook her head, tears spilling down her face.
“I didn't know,” she whispered.
“I swear I didn't know.””
Daniel closed the briefcase.
“Your mother left you one final message, Adrian.””
He took out a sealed envelope and handed it over.
Adrian opened it with trembling fingers.
Inside was a single sentence.
My son, the woman you were about to marry is not your enemy because she wanted the money. She is your enemy because she is the only person who can prove that I never died.
Adrian looked up.
Vanessa stood beneath the altar, surrounded by scattered roses.
Malcolm covered his face.
And from the entrance, Daniel Cross delivered the final truth.
“Eleanor Bennett didn't fake her death to escape your father,” he said.
“She faked it because she discovered that someone in this family had already murdered the woman whose identity she was using.””
Adrian's eyes widened.
“Whose identity?””
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
“Her biological mother's.””
The venue fell silent.
Vanessa slowly raised her eyes to Adrian.
Then she whispered the one sentence nobody had expected to hear.
“My mother was Eleanor Bennett.””
The phone in Adrian's hand began ringing again.
This time, the caller ID displayed a different name.
*SERENA BENNETT.*
Adrian answered.
Serena's voice came through, weak but clear.
“Adrian, don't trust the letter. Don't trust the recording. And whatever you do, don't let Vanessa leave that building.””
He stared at the bride.
“Why?””
Serena took a shaky breath.
“Because the woman standing at your altar isn't Vanessa.””
A beat of silence followed.
Then Serena whispered:
“Vanessa died twenty-four years ago.””
The call ended.
Adrian looked at the woman in the white wedding gown.
For the first time, he noticed the tiny scar beneath her left ear, the one Eleanor had always hidden beneath her hair.
Vanessa smiled through her tears.
Then she reached up, removed a small pearl earring, and revealed a second scar beneath the first.
“Your mother told you everything,” she said softly.
She stepped away from the altar.
“But she never told you who I really am.””
The police officers moved toward her.
Adrian held Chloe close.
May you like
And as the torn rose wall swayed behind them, the woman he had almost married looked directly into his eyes and spoke the final words of the wedding.
“I'm your mother.””
