Chapter 5: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to See

“Play it again.””

Adrian stood inches from the coordinator's tablet, his eyes fixed on the paused security footage.

The wedding venue remained bright and elegant around him. Sunlight spilled across the cream aisle. Torn roses lay scattered near the altar, and the guests watched in uneasy silence as the polished celebration unraveled in front of them.

On the screen, Malcolm Bennett carried Serena through the service entrance.

Her head rested against his shoulder.

Her arms hung limply at her sides.

Vanessa followed close behind, looking over her shoulder before reaching for the door.

Adrian felt sick.

“That's my father,” he said.

The coordinator nodded.

“Yes.””

“Show me the timestamp.””

She enlarged the image.

“Six forty-two this morning.””

Adrian glanced at the clock above the venue entrance.

The ceremony had been scheduled for eleven.

He looked at Malcolm.

“You brought Serena here before the wedding?””

Malcolm rubbed his forehead.

“Adrian, let me explain.””

“You carried her into a hidden room, and then you stood at the altar while I prepared to marry the woman who helped you conceal her.””

“I didn't know what Vanessa intended to do.””

Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.

“That's convenient.””

Malcolm turned toward her.

“You told me Serena was coming here voluntarily.””

“I told you what you needed to believe.””

“You said she wanted to speak with Adrian privately.””

“And you believed me because you wanted to!””

Adrian stepped between them.

“Stop talking around me. Why was Serena here?””

Malcolm looked toward Serena, who was now sitting upright with Chloe wrapped around her. The little girl had refused to leave her mother's side, even when the ambulance crew entered the venue.

“Serena contacted me,” Malcolm said.

Adrian frowned.

“When?””

“Three days ago.””

Serena closed her eyes.

“I called him because I couldn't reach you.””

Adrian stared at her.

“Why couldn't you reach me?””

“Your number had changed. The emails I sent came back. When I called your office, your assistant said you didn't want to speak to me.””

“I never said that.””

“I know that now.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“She's making everything sound so innocent.””

Serena looked at her.

“I asked Malcolm to help me see my daughter. I didn't ask him to hide me.””

Malcolm exhaled slowly.

“She said she had evidence that would change everything you believed about the divorce.””

Adrian turned toward him.

“What evidence?””

Malcolm glanced at Vanessa.

“Messages. Financial records. Documents showing that Serena had been trying to contact you for years.””

Adrian's stomach tightened.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I needed to verify them.””

“For three days?””

“I had concerns about the timing.””

“What timing?””

Malcolm looked away.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Your father didn't want this wedding interrupted by a woman who has spent years trying to destroy our relationship.””

“Your relationship with whom?”” Adrian asked.

“Me or my father?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

She didn't answer.

The ambulance crew approached Serena, carrying a medical bag and a folded stretcher. One paramedic crouched beside her and began checking her pulse.

“Ma'am, can you tell me your name?””

“Serena Bennett.””

“Do you know where you are?””

“At my daughter's father's wedding.””

The paramedic exchanged a brief glance with his partner.

“Okay. We're going to get you checked out.””

Chloe immediately grabbed Serena's hand.

“Can I go with her?””

“We'll make sure you can stay close,” the paramedic assured her.

Adrian crouched beside his daughter.

“Sweetheart, go with Mommy. I'll be right behind you.””

Chloe searched his face.

“Promise you won't let Vanessa take me away?””

Adrian's throat tightened.

“I promise nobody is taking you anywhere without your say and without the proper people protecting you.””

She nodded, though she still looked frightened.

As the paramedics helped Serena onto the stretcher, Malcolm stepped toward Adrian.

“There is something else you need to understand.””

Adrian rose.

“I've heard enough half-truths for one day.””

“This concerns your marriage.””

“My marriage ended about thirty minutes ago.””

Vanessa flinched.

Adrian continued.

“I want the wedding canceled. I want the police here. And I want every security recording preserved.””

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

“You can't cancel everything because you're angry.””

“Watch me.””

“You'll regret humiliating me.””

Adrian stared at her.

“You hid a woman behind flowers while I stood ten feet away promising to build a life with you.””

“I didn't put her there!””

“You knew she was there.””

Vanessa looked toward Malcolm.

“Tell him the truth!””

Malcolm's face turned ashen.

“Vanessa, don't.””

“Tell him what Serena was carrying.””

Adrian froze.

“What was she carrying?””

Neither answered.

The paramedics began wheeling Serena toward the venue entrance. Chloe walked beside the stretcher, holding her mother's hand.

Just before they reached the doors, Serena turned her head.

“Adrian.””

He hurried to her side.

“What is it?””

“Your father knows why I disappeared.””

Malcolm's eyes widened.

Serena's voice weakened.

“And Vanessa knows who paid to keep me silent.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“She's confused. She's been trapped in there. You can't believe everything she says.””

The paramedic adjusted Serena's oxygen and asked her to conserve her strength.

Adrian held her gaze.

“Don't worry about anything else right now. Get well. We'll figure it out.””

Serena caught his wrist.

“Look inside your father's jacket.””

Adrian turned.

Malcolm instinctively pressed one hand against his chest.

The movement was small.

But Adrian saw it.

So did Vanessa.

“Dad,” Adrian said slowly, “what are you hiding?””

Malcolm stepped backward.

“Nothing.””

Adrian held out his hand.

“Give it to me.””

“I won't.””

For a moment, father and son stood facing each other while the entire wedding watched.

Then Chloe's voice came from beside the stretcher.

“Daddy, I saw him put something in the flowers.””

Adrian turned toward her.

“What did you see, sweetheart?””

Chloe pointed at the torn rose wall.

“A little black box. Grandpa took it out before he put Mommy behind the door.””

Malcolm's face changed.

Vanessa whispered, “Oh, no.””

Adrian looked at the wall.

A small black object was wedged beneath the fallen frame, partly covered by white petals.

He knelt and pulled it free.

It was a recording device.

A red light blinked on its surface.

The screen displayed a file marked with that morning's date.

Adrian pressed play.

His father's voice emerged first.

“Once she's inside, nobody opens that door until I give the signal.””

Then Vanessa's voice answered.

“And if Adrian finds out?””

Malcolm's recorded response was chillingly calm.

“He won't. Because by tonight, he'll believe Serena is dead.””

Adrian slowly lifted his eyes toward his father.

Malcolm didn't move.

Vanessa began backing toward the altar.

And the recording continued.

“There's one more thing,” Malcolm's voice said.

“Adrian must never learn what happened to his mother.””
