Chapter 3: The Note Beneath the Flowers

“Don't touch that paper.””

Adrian held the folded note against his chest as Vanessa reached for it again.

Her wedding ring flashed in the daylight.

“Adrian, you're making a terrible mistake,” she said.

“You don't understand what you're looking at.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa glanced at the guests.

Several had moved closer despite the coordinator's attempts to keep the aisle clear. Phones were raised. Whispers spread between the rows of white chairs. The officiant stood beside the altar, his hands clasped tightly around his small black book.

“This is a private family matter,” Vanessa said.

Adrian let out a short, humorless laugh.

“You hid my daughter's mother inside a wall at my wedding. There is nothing private about this anymore.””

“I didn't hide anyone!””

Serena jerked at the sound of Vanessa's voice.

Chloe immediately wrapped herself around her mother's waist.

“Stop yelling at her!””

Vanessa pointed at the girl.

“You have no idea what your mother has done.””

“Vanessa,” Adrian warned.

“No, she should know.”” Vanessa's voice grew sharper.

“Everyone should know. Serena walked out of your life years ago. She left you to raise Chloe alone, and now she's back at the exact moment you're about to marry me. Doesn't that strike you as suspicious?””

Adrian looked at Serena.

For years, he had believed his former wife had chosen to disappear. Their marriage had ended in bitter arguments and unanswered questions, followed by a silence he had interpreted as rejection.

He had told Chloe that her mother needed time.

He had told himself that eventually Serena would return.

Then the years passed.

Vanessa had entered their lives with warmth and confidence, and little by little, the unanswered questions had seemed less urgent.

Now Serena was sitting on the floor in a ruined wedding gown, unable to stand without his support.

“Serena,” Adrian said quietly, “did you leave us?””

She closed her eyes.

“No.””

The answer was barely audible.

Adrian's fingers tightened around the note.

“Did you ever stop trying to contact Chloe?””

Serena began to cry.

“Never.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is manipulation.””

Serena looked up at her.

“You took my phone.””

“Enough.””

“You told me Adrian had signed papers to keep Chloe away from me.””

“Stop talking.””

“You said if I tried to see my daughter again, you'd make sure he never believed another word I said.””

Vanessa lunged forward.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Don't you dare come near her.””

Vanessa stopped so abruptly that the hem of her gown brushed against the scattered roses.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she looked at Adrian with an expression he had never seen before: pure resentment, stripped of every polished layer.

“You think you're some kind of hero?”” she asked.

“You have no idea what I've done for this family.””

“Move away from Serena.””

“I was the one who stayed. I was the one who helped you when Chloe cried herself to sleep. I was the one who sat beside you when you couldn't bear to talk about your failed marriage.””

“And you used that to make me believe Serena abandoned us?””

“I told you what you needed to know!””

Adrian stared at her.

The confession seemed to surprise Vanessa as much as it surprised him.

She looked toward the guests, then lowered her voice.

“Adrian, listen to me. We can still fix this. Send everyone home. Let the doctors take Serena away, and we'll talk about it tomorrow.””

“Tomorrow?””

“Yes.””

“You expect me to marry you after this?””

Vanessa's eyes filled, but the tears came too quickly, too neatly.

“Don't throw away everything we've built because of one woman's story.””

Chloe suddenly stood.

“She isn't lying!””

Her voice rang across the aisle.

Everyone turned.

Chloe was shaking, but she didn't step back.

“I heard Mommy behind the wall yesterday. I wanted to tell Daddy, but Vanessa said I was imagining things.””

Adrian turned toward her.

“What exactly did she say, sweetheart?””

Chloe swallowed.

“She took me behind the flowers when nobody was looking. She said the wall was part of the wedding surprise and I wasn't allowed to touch it.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Chloe, stop.””

“But I heard Mommy say my name!””

The little girl pressed both hands against her chest.

“I asked Vanessa who was crying. She said it was a worker and that I would ruin everything if I told you.””

Adrian felt the floor seem to shift beneath him.

“You knew Serena was behind the wall yesterday?”” he asked Vanessa.

She said nothing.

“Look at me and answer.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she whispered, “You don't understand why I did it.””

“Then tell me.””

Her eyes flickered toward Serena.

“I was protecting what belongs to me.””

Serena's face went white.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What's that supposed to mean?””

Vanessa opened her mouth, but a sudden commotion near the entrance interrupted her.

Two venue security officers hurried down the aisle. Behind them walked an older Black man in a charcoal suit, his silver cuff links catching the sunlight.

Adrian recognized him instantly.

His father, Malcolm Bennett.

The man who had paid for the wedding venue.

The man who had personally approved the floral installation.

The man Vanessa had described as being delayed by a business meeting.

Malcolm stopped beside the fallen rose wall.

His gaze moved from Adrian to Chloe, then to Serena sitting on the floor.

Finally, he looked at Vanessa.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Malcolm reached inside his jacket and removed a small brass key.

“I told you,” he said quietly, “that this was never supposed to happen in front of my son.””

Adrian stared at the key.

Vanessa took a frightened step backward.

Serena began shaking so violently that Chloe had to hold her with both arms.

“Dad,” Adrian said slowly, “what does that key open?””

Malcolm looked at the torn flowers.

Then he looked directly at Serena.

“The door behind that wall,” he replied.

Adrian's stomach dropped.

“There was a door?””

Malcolm closed his fingers around the key.

“Yes.””

He paused, his expression hardening.

“But the person who locked Serena inside wasn't Vanessa.””

And as Adrian turned toward his father, he realized the wedding mystery had just become something far more terrifying than a betrayal by his bride.
