Chapter 11: The Vault Beneath the Company

Daniel didn't let us leave the clinic immediately.

He wanted statements from Grace, confirmation of Eleanor's arrest, and copies of every document Anthony had brought.

Anthony, however, seemed perfectly comfortable.

He sat in the waiting area, scrolling through his phone while police officers questioned the receptionist.

I stood beside Grace.

"Did you know about the recording?""

She nodded.

"Claire told me about it before she died.""

"What did she say?""

"She said Frank had proof that someone had been stealing money from the company for years.""

"Who?""

Grace looked toward Anthony.

"She believed it was him.""

Anthony raised his head.

"That's a serious accusation.""

Grace ignored him.

"Claire discovered payments going to companies that didn't exist. She copied the records and hid them somewhere.""

"Where?""

"The company vault.""

Daniel joined us.

"Which vault?""

Grace turned toward him.

"The original headquarters.""

Daniel frowned.

"The building was sold fifteen years ago.""

"Not the basement.""

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

"Frank built a private archive beneath the original building. It was never included in the sale agreement.""

Daniel took out his phone.

"I'll contact the current property owner.""

Anthony stood.

"There's no point.""

I turned.

"Why?""

"Because I've already been there.""

Grace looked startled.

"When?""

"Last week.""

"What did you find?""

Anthony smiled.

"Nothing.""

I didn't believe him.

Daniel closed his briefcase.

"We're going to the building.""

Anthony shook his head.

"You're wasting your time.""

I walked toward him.

"Then you won't mind coming with us.""

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

"Gladly.""

The old headquarters stood in downtown Hartford.

The building had once been the heart of Carter Development Holdings. Its glass exterior was weathered, and the company logo had been removed years ago.

A real estate firm now occupied the upper floors.

Daniel had arranged access through the property manager.

We entered through the underground parking garage.

Grace led the way toward a service corridor.

"Claire used to bring me here when I was little," she said.

"Why?""

"She worked with Frank. Sometimes she couldn't find childcare, so she'd bring me to the office.""

She stopped beside a concrete wall.

"There.""

I looked at it.

It appeared ordinary.

A fire extinguisher hung beside a metal cabinet.

Grace removed the extinguisher and pressed a small panel behind it.

A faint click sounded.

Part of the wall shifted.

Behind it was a narrow steel door.

Daniel examined the lock.

"Do you have a key?""

Grace shook her head.

"Claire gave me a code.""

She entered six numbers.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

A cold smell of dust and old paper drifted into the corridor.

Inside was a small room lined with filing cabinets.

A desk stood in the middle.

On its surface was a photograph of Frank Russo.

I approached it.

He looked exactly as I remembered.

Same strong jaw.

Same dark eyes.

Same expression that made people feel he was always three steps ahead.

Beside the photograph was a handwritten note.

For my children. When the truth becomes more valuable than the company, open the final cabinet.

I looked toward Grace.

"Which one is the final cabinet?""

She pointed to the back wall.

There were five cabinets.

Four were open.

The fifth was locked.

Daniel examined the metal surface.

"Combination lock.""

I looked at the note.

"Any idea what the code might be?""

Grace stared at the photograph.

"Claire's birthday.""

She entered the date.

The lock opened.

Inside were three thick folders and a small cassette recorder.

I picked up the first folder.

It contained company transactions dating back twenty-five years.

The second contained medical documents.

The third contained photographs.

One photograph showed Claire standing beside Frank outside a hospital.

Another showed Anthony entering a private office.

The last photograph made me stop.

It showed Eleanor standing beside a man.

A man whose face I recognized.

Richard Carter.

But the photograph was dated two years before I was born.

I turned it over.

There was a handwritten note.

Eleanor and Richard. The night they agreed to erase Frank.

I looked at Grace.

"What does this mean?""

She took the photograph.

Her face went pale.

"Richard wasn't Frank's new identity.""

"What?""

"Richard Carter was a real person.""

I stared at her.

"Who was he?""

Grace opened the second folder.

Inside was a police report.

The name Richard Carter appeared at the top.

The date was twenty-six years earlier.

Cause of death: blunt-force trauma.

Location: private residence.

Suspect: unknown.

I felt my stomach turn.

"Was Richard murdered?""

Grace nodded.

"Claire believed Frank had killed him.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Eleanor was standing beside Richard.

Not Frank.

I suddenly understood why she had been so afraid.

She had known the man who raised me wasn't the person he claimed to be.

Daniel picked up the cassette recorder.

"Let's see what's on this.""

He pressed play.

A burst of static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

Frank Russo.

"If my children are listening to this, then I am probably dead.""

I closed my eyes.

His voice sounded exactly as I remembered.

"I have spent twenty years trying to protect this family from the consequences of my own decisions. I changed names. I changed records.

I buried documents. I convinced myself that every lie was necessary.""

A pause.

"Anthony, if you're listening, I want you to understand that I never hated you.""

Anthony stood near the doorway.

His face had lost its confidence.

Frank continued.

"I knew what you did with the company money. I knew about the false invoices, the shell corporations, and the payments made in Claire's name.""

Grace covered her mouth.

Then Frank said something that made my blood run cold.

"Claire didn't die because she discovered the theft. She died because she discovered who was responsible for Richard Carter's murder.""

I looked at Daniel.

The recording continued.

"The man responsible wasn't me.""

Static interrupted the voice.

Then another sentence came through.

"It was Eleanor.""

Nobody moved.

I stared at the recorder.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman who had protected me.

The woman who had just been arrested.

Frank's voice became weaker.

"I found out too late. She had already taken the documents. She had already changed the hospital records. And she had already convinced everyone that the wrong man was dead.""

The recording stopped.

For several seconds, the only sound was the faint hum of the building's ventilation system.

Then Anthony began laughing.

A quiet, broken laugh.

"Well," he said, "that explains everything.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

He looked at Grace.

Then at me.

"Eleanor didn't just help Frank disappear.""

He walked toward the desk.

"She killed Richard Carter, then helped Frank steal his identity.""

I felt sick.

Daniel picked up the police report.

"That would mean the man who raised Marcus was Frank Russo.""

Anthony nodded.

"And the woman who raised him was the murderer.""

Grace began crying.

I stood motionless.

Everything I thought I knew about my childhood had collapsed.

Then Daniel noticed something written on the bottom of the cassette label.

He held it up.

*SECOND RECORDING — PLAY ONLY AFTER CONFIRMING THE IDENTITY OF THE THIRD CHILD.*

Grace frowned.

"Third child?""

Anthony stopped laughing.

I looked at him.

"What third child?""

He slowly stepped backward.

Then he said something I would never forget.

"Marcus, there were never three of us.""

I stared at him.

"Then why did Margaret say there were?""

May you like

Anthony looked at the photograph of Frank.

"Because one of us was never supposed to exist.""
