Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Locked Door
We left the nursing home through a side entrance.
Daniel insisted on driving directly to a hotel rather than returning home.
He said Anthony's lawyers were already making inquiries about Margaret's medical condition, and he didn't want us walking into another trap.
I couldn't stop thinking about one thing.
Margaret's will.
Apparently, the woman I had spent thirty-five years believing was dead possessed something Anthony wanted desperately.
My biological identity.
At 9:40 that evening, Daniel placed a laptop on the hotel desk.
"I've contacted a colleague in Boston," he said.
"He can help us locate Helen Carter.""
I sat on the edge of the bed.
"Can you find Grace?""
"Possibly. But we need to be careful.""
"Why?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Because if Anthony has been searching for her for decades, he may already know more than we do.""
Eleanor sat in an armchair near the window.
She hadn't spoken much since we left the nursing home.
I turned toward her.
"Tell me everything you know about Grace.""
She looked down.
"She was raised by Helen after Claire died.""
"Did she know Frank was her father?""
"Yes.""
"Did she know about me?""
Eleanor nodded.
"She knew you existed.""
"Did she know Anthony?""
"Not personally.""
"Then why was she hiding?""
My mother took a long breath.
"Because when Frank died, he left instructions that she should never contact the family.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because he believed someone inside the company had arranged Claire's death.""
I stared at her.
"Someone inside the company?""
She nodded.
"Frank thought the person responsible was still working there.""
"Who?""
She looked away.
"I don't know.""
I stood.
"You keep saying that. But every time we get close to an answer, you suddenly remember something else.""
Her eyes filled.
"Marcus, I was trying to survive.""
"So was Margaret.""
Eleanor looked at me.
"So was I.""
For the first time, I noticed how small she looked sitting in that chair.
Not the elegant woman who had hosted dinner parties and managed our family business.
Just an aging woman who had spent decades protecting secrets she could no longer control.
But sympathy wasn't going to erase what she had done.
"Did you know Margaret was alive when I was a child?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know she was my mother?""
"Yes.""
"Did you ever let her see me?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"No.""
I looked at her for a long moment.
Then I walked into the bathroom and closed the door.
I needed a few minutes without anyone lying to me.
The next morning, Daniel received a call from Boston.
He returned to the room holding a printed address.
"We found Helen Carter.""
I stood immediately.
"Where?""
"She lives in a retirement community outside Boston.""
"And Grace?""
Daniel hesitated.
"That's the strange part.""
"What?""
"Helen has no legal children listed.""
I frowned.
"But she raised Grace.""
"Apparently, she never formally adopted her.""
"Then where is Grace?""
Daniel handed me another document.
A missing-person report.
The name was Grace Bennett.
The date was eighteen years earlier.
I stared at the page.
"She disappeared?""
Daniel nodded.
"According to the report, she left home at nineteen and never returned.""
I turned toward Eleanor.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She looked genuinely shocked.
"I didn't know.""
Daniel continued.
"The report was filed by Helen. But there was no investigation beyond the initial inquiry.""
I read the details.
Last seen leaving a bus station.
No confirmed destination.
No bank activity.
No known employment.
Then I noticed something.
The reporting officer's name.
Detective Thomas Reed.
I recognized it.
He had been my father's security consultant for years.
"Daniel.""
"Yes?""
"Find out whether this detective is still alive.""
Daniel looked at the document.
"I'll check.""
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
*If you're looking for Grace, stop asking questions in Boston. She isn't there.*
I stared at it.
Another message followed.
*She is closer than you think.*
Then a photograph arrived.
It showed a woman standing behind the reception desk of a medical clinic.
Her dark hair was tied back.
She wore glasses.
But the eyes were unmistakable.
Margaret's eyes.
My mother's eyes.
I enlarged the photograph.
The name tag on her uniform read:
*DR. GRACE BENNETT.*
I turned toward Daniel.
"Find this clinic.""
He examined the photograph.
"Marcus, I know that place.""
"Where?""
"New Haven.""
My heart began racing.
"How do you know it?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Because it's owned by a charitable foundation connected to your father's old company.""
I stared at him.
"Who runs the foundation?""
He hesitated.
"Eleanor Carter.""
I turned toward my mother.
She had gone completely pale.
"Mom?""
She stood.
"That's not possible.""
"You own the foundation?""
"No.""
Daniel opened his laptop.
"Actually, she does. The foundation was transferred into her name fifteen years ago.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
She shook her head.
"I thought the foundation had been dissolved.""
Daniel turned the screen toward me.
"Someone has been making regular payments to the clinic for years.""
I read the account details.
The payments came from a trust.
Margaret Russo's trust.
And the beneficiary listed was Grace Bennett.
I stared at the photograph again.
"She's been living twenty minutes from my house?""
Daniel nodded.
"Apparently.""
I looked at Eleanor.
"Did you know?""
She shook her head.
But something in her expression told me she recognized the clinic.
I picked up my coat.
"Let's go.""
The clinic occupied a renovated brick building on a quiet street.
There were no large signs, only a small plaque beside the entrance.
*BENNETT FAMILY MEDICAL CENTER.*
I stepped inside.
A receptionist greeted us.
"Good afternoon. How can I help you?""
"I'm looking for Dr. Grace Bennett.""
"Do you have an appointment?""
"No. It's personal.""
She gave me a polite smile.
"I'm afraid she's with a patient.""
I waited.
Daniel stood beside me.
Eleanor remained near the entrance, visibly uncomfortable.
After ten minutes, a woman walked out of a corridor carrying a medical file.
She looked at the receptionist.
"Did the pharmacy call?""
Then she turned toward us.
Her eyes landed on Eleanor.
The file slipped from her hands.
"Mrs. Carter?""
My mother took a step forward.
"Grace.""
The woman stared at her.
Then she looked at me.
I felt my throat tighten.
"Are you Grace Bennett?""
She nodded slowly.
"Who are you?""
I stepped closer.
"Marcus Carter.""
Her face changed.
For several seconds, she simply stared.
Then she whispered:
"You're alive.""
I frowned.
"What?""
She looked at Eleanor.
"You told me he died.""
The words struck me harder than any revelation before.
I turned toward my mother.
"What did you tell her?""
Eleanor's lips trembled.
"Grace, I can explain.""
Grace backed away.
"No. You don't get to explain.""
She looked at me again.
"Your father told me you were dead.""
I felt sick.
"Which father?""
"Frank.""
I swallowed.
"Why?""
Grace shook her head.
"Because he was afraid you would come looking for me.""
I stared at her.
"Why would he be afraid of that?""
She looked toward the reception desk.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Because he knew what happened to Claire.""
I stepped closer.
"What happened to your mother?""
Grace's eyes filled.
"She wasn't killed in a car accident.""
"I know.""
"No, Marcus. You don't.""
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded photograph.
It showed a young woman standing beside a man in a dark suit.
I recognized the man immediately.
Frank Russo.
But there was something else.
The woman was holding a baby.
And the baby wasn't Grace.
It was me.
I stared at the photograph.
Grace whispered:
"Your mother was killed because she discovered that Frank had switched the identities of his children.""
I couldn't breathe.
"What identities?""
Grace looked directly at me.
"Anthony Russo was supposed to inherit the company. You were supposed to disappear.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"Then why am I here?""
She looked at Eleanor.
"Because someone changed the hospital records.""
I turned toward my mother.
"Who?""
Grace took another step closer.
"Your mother did.""
The clinic became silent.
I stared at her.
"Which mother?""
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
"The woman who raised you.""
Then she reached for my hand.
And whispered the words that would change everything.
"Marcus, Eleanor Carter isn't your adoptive mother.""
She paused.
"She's your biological aunt.""
My entire body went cold.
Before I could respond, the clinic's front doors slammed open.
A man walked inside.
Anthony Russo.
He looked directly at Grace.
Then at me.
And smiled.
"Well," he said, "it looks like the whole family is finally together.""
He raised a document.
"Unfortunately, there's one more thing you should know.""
May you like
His eyes moved toward Eleanor.
"Your mother has just been arrested.""
