Chapter 14: The Woman Who Ordered the Cake
I returned home at 11:36 p.m.
Not alone.
Daniel had insisted on accompanying me, and two detectives waited in an unmarked vehicle outside the property.
Grace stayed with them.
Anthony refused to come.
He said he had already made enough mistakes by trusting people who wore expensive clothes and called themselves family.
When I entered the house, the lights were on.
Vanessa stood in the dining room.
The cake sat on the table.
Chocolate frosting.
Blue icing.
White flowers.
And the name *MRS. CARTER* written across the top.
She wore the black dress I had bought her for our fifth anniversary.
Her hair was neatly arranged.
Her makeup was perfect.
It was almost as if nothing had happened.
"You're here," she whispered.
I remained near the doorway.
"Where's the birth certificate?""
She pointed toward the table.
An envelope lay beside the cake.
I didn't touch it.
"Tell me everything.""
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
"Can we speak privately?""
"No.""
She swallowed.
"Fine.""
She picked up the envelope.
"Your biological mother was Margaret Russo. Your biological father was Richard Carter. But you were registered under Sarah Whitmore's name because Richard wanted to protect you from his family.""
"Why?""
"Because Eleanor had been stealing from him.""
I waited.
Vanessa continued.
"Richard discovered that Eleanor was transferring company money into private accounts. When he confronted her, she attacked him.""
"With what?""
"A brass fireplace ornament.""
I remembered the old brass horse that used to sit in my father's study.
Vanessa nodded.
"That was the weapon.""
My stomach tightened.
"Then Frank arrived?""
"Yes. He helped Eleanor hide the body and took Richard's identity.""
"Why?""
"Because Frank wanted control of the company. He had been working with Richard for years. When Richard died, Frank saw an opportunity.""
I stared at her.
"And Margaret?""
"Margaret knew Richard was your father. She had agreed to the embryo transfer because Richard wanted a child.""
"Why did she let me go?""
"Because she believed Richard would give you a safe life.""
Vanessa paused.
"But Frank and Eleanor changed everything.""
I looked at the cake.
"Why did you order this?""
"I didn't.""
"Then who did?""
She looked toward the hallway.
Before she could answer, the front door opened.
A woman entered.
She was elderly, dressed in a dark green coat, and walked with a silver cane.
Her hair was white.
Her face was thin.
But her eyes were familiar.
I recognized her from the photograph Anthony had shown me.
Sarah Whitmore.
The woman I had been told was my mother.
She looked directly at me.
"Hello, Marcus.""
I couldn't move.
Vanessa stepped aside.
Sarah approached slowly.
"I've waited a long time to meet you.""
I stared at her.
"Why did you send the cake?""
She smiled sadly.
"Because I wanted to know whether you still remembered the name Carter.""
I glanced at the cake.
"Why?""
"Because I knew Eleanor would recognize it. And I knew she would panic.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you know Sarah was alive?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"How long?""
"Since the beginning.""
I turned back to Sarah.
"Why did everyone lie about who gave birth to me?""
She sat down.
"Because the truth was too dangerous.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Mrs. Whitmore, we need to understand your involvement in the identity transfer.""
Sarah nodded.
"I'll tell you everything.""
She opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.
Inside were medical records, photographs, and a handwritten letter.
She placed the letter on the table.
"Richard was my husband. We couldn't have children. He and Margaret agreed to an embryo donation arrangement.
Margaret provided the egg. Richard provided the sperm. I was supposed to carry the baby.""
I stared at her.
"Then why didn't you?""
"Because I became seriously ill. The doctors advised against pregnancy.""
She looked down.
"Richard arranged for another woman to carry the baby.""
"Eleanor?""
Sarah nodded.
"She was my sister.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"My aunt?""
"Yes.""
I sat down.
Sarah continued.
"Richard trusted Eleanor. He believed she would help us. But after you were born, she became obsessed with the company.""
"Why?""
"Because she believed Richard would leave everything to you.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was taking notes.
Sarah continued.
"One evening, Richard confronted her. He told her he was changing his will. He wanted to leave the company to a trust for you, Margaret, and the other children.""
"Anthony and Grace.""
"Yes.""
Sarah took a breath.
"Richard told Eleanor she would receive nothing. They argued. She struck him.""
I looked at her.
"Did you see it?""
Sarah nodded.
"I was there.""
The room fell silent.
"Why didn't you call the police?""
"Because Frank arrived before I could.""
She began crying.
"He told me Richard was dead. He told me Eleanor would go to prison, the company would collapse, and the children would be separated. He convinced me to help him create a new identity.""
I stared at her.
"So you knew Frank had stolen Richard's name.""
"Yes.""
"And you let me believe he was my father?""
"I was trying to protect you.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone says that.""
Sarah looked at me.
"I know.""
She placed another document on the table.
"This is Richard's original will.""
I opened it.
The first page named me as the primary beneficiary of a family trust.
But the second page contained something unexpected.
The company wasn't mine.
It belonged to all three children.
Anthony.
Grace.
And me.
Each held one-third.
I looked up.
"Why did Frank change it?""
"Because he wanted to control everything.""
I continued reading.
Then I noticed a handwritten amendment.
It was dated three days before Richard died.
The amendment stated that if any of the three beneficiaries had been deliberately deprived of their identity, the entire trust would be transferred to an independent foundation.
I frowned.
"What foundation?""
Sarah smiled sadly.
"One established by Margaret.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Who controls it?""
"Nobody. It can only be activated by all three children together.""
I stared at the document.
"Then why did Vanessa sign the transfer papers?""
Sarah turned toward her.
"Because Frank promised her a share if she could get all three signatures.""
I looked at my wife.
"Is that true?""
Vanessa began crying.
"Yes.""
"How much?""
"Five million.""
I stared at her.
She looked down.
"I was going to tell you.""
"When?""
She couldn't answer.
Sarah reached for the cake knife.
"There's something else.""
She cut the cake.
Inside, beneath the chocolate layers, was a small plastic envelope.
She removed it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
Three newborn babies.
Three hospital bracelets.
And a handwritten note.
Three children. One family. One truth.
I looked at the photograph.
Then at Sarah.
"Where did you get this?""
She whispered:
"From the woman who ordered the cake.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
Sarah looked toward the window.
"Margaret.""
I froze.
"She's at the nursing home.""
Sarah shook her head.
"Not anymore.""
My phone rang.
A hospital number appeared.
I answered.
"Mr. Carter?""
A nurse's voice.
"Your mother has been admitted. She's asking for you.""
I felt my heart race.
"Which mother?""
The nurse paused.
"Margaret Russo.""
I turned toward Sarah.
She looked terrified.
Then the nurse said:
"There's something you need to know. She arrived with a man who claims to be your father.""
I gripped the phone.
"That's impossible.""
The nurse lowered her voice.
"He's alive, Mr. Carter.""
I looked at the photograph.
At the three babies.
At the cake.
May you like
Then I heard the final sentence.
"And he's asking for Anthony.""
