Chapter 12: The Child Who Was Never Born
I stared at Anthony.
"What do you mean one of us was never supposed to exist?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward the filing cabinet and removed a thin folder hidden behind the others.
He placed it on the desk.
The label read:
*PROJECT THREE — IDENTITY TRANSFER.*
Grace looked at it.
"What's that?""
Anthony opened the folder.
Inside were three birth certificates.
The first belonged to Anthony Russo.
The second belonged to Marcus Carter.
The third belonged to a girl named Grace Bennett.
But the dates were wrong.
Anthony's birth certificate listed him as born in 1986.
Mine listed 1991.
Grace's listed 1995.
I frowned.
"What's wrong with them?""
Anthony pointed at the signatures.
"Look at the physician's name.""
I leaned closer.
Dr. Samuel Whitmore.
The same doctor appeared on all three documents.
Daniel examined the papers.
"That isn't unusual if he worked at the same hospital.""
Anthony shook his head.
"He didn't.""
He turned to me.
"He was a fertility specialist.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Grace looked confused.
"Why would a fertility specialist sign birth certificates?""
Anthony opened another page.
It contained a medical report.
A laboratory record.
And a handwritten note from Frank.
The transfer must remain confidential. No biological records should be released without my authorization.
I read it twice.
"Transfer?""
Anthony nodded.
"Your father had a plan. He wanted to create a legal family without revealing the biological relationships.""
Grace stepped forward.
"That doesn't explain anything.""
Anthony looked at her.
"It explains why your birth records were changed.""
He pointed to the first certificate.
"Anthony was Margaret's biological son. That's true.""
Then he pointed to mine.
"Marcus was born to a different woman.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"What?""
Grace looked at Eleanor's empty chair.
"Then who was his mother?""
Anthony didn't answer.
He pointed to the third certificate.
"Grace wasn't Claire's biological daughter either.""
Silence filled the vault.
I stared at him.
"You're saying none of us have the parents we were told we had?""
Anthony gave a slow nod.
"Not exactly.""
He opened the medical report.
"Frank used a fertility clinic to arrange a series of embryo transfers. He wanted children who would inherit the company, but he also wanted to control which families they came from.""
Grace backed away.
"That's disgusting.""
Anthony looked at her.
"Welcome to the family.""
I grabbed the folder.
"Where are the original records?""
Anthony pointed to the cassette recorder.
"That's what the second recording explains.""
Daniel pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Frank's voice returned.
"To whoever has found this recording, I need you to understand that the children were never the problem. The adults were.""
I felt my throat tighten.
Frank continued.
"Anthony was born to Margaret. Marcus was born to a woman named Sarah Whitmore. Grace was born to Claire Bennett.""
I looked at Grace.
She closed her eyes.
Frank continued.
"I arranged the transfers because I believed I could protect all three children from the people who wanted to use them.""
The recording paused.
Then another voice spoke.
A woman's voice.
Eleanor.
"Frank, you can't keep doing this. They deserve to know.""
Frank answered.
"They'll know when it's safe.""
"When will that be?""
"When Anthony stops looking for the company.""
A sharp sound followed.
Then Eleanor spoke again.
"What about Marcus?""
Frank's answer was immediate.
"Marcus is the only one who can inherit everything without creating a legal war.""
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
"Sarah Whitmore signed away her parental rights. Claire agreed to raise Grace. Margaret agreed to let Anthony use the Russo name. Everything was legal.""
I looked at Anthony.
"Then why did you spend your life trying to get the company?""
He laughed without humor.
"Because Frank promised me it would be mine.""
Frank's voice continued.
"Then Richard Carter died.""
The room went silent.
I leaned toward the recorder.
Frank spoke more slowly.
"Eleanor discovered that Richard had been stealing from the company. She confronted him. They argued. Richard fell down the stairs.""
I closed my eyes.
"Eleanor panicked. She called me. By the time I arrived, he was dead.""
Grace whispered, "Oh, my God.""
Frank continued.
"I made the decision to take his identity. I used his documents, his business records, and his name. I believed it would keep Eleanor out of prison.""
Daniel looked at me.
"So Frank became Richard Carter.""
I nodded slowly.
The recording continued.
"But the truth is more complicated. Richard wasn't the man who owned the company. He was the man whose name I stole to save the woman I loved.""
A pause.
Then Frank said:
"And I would have done it again.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the floor.
The man I had called Dad had taken another man's identity, hidden my biological mother, and manipulated the lives of three children.
But Eleanor had killed someone.
And she had helped conceal it.
I turned toward Anthony.
"Why did you say one of us was never supposed to exist?""
He looked at me.
"Because the third birth certificate is fake.""
I frowned.
"Which one?""
He pointed to Grace's.
She went pale.
"What?""
Anthony continued.
"Claire was never pregnant with you.""
Grace shook her head.
"You're lying.""
"Ask Eleanor.""
"She's been lying to us for years!""
Anthony nodded.
"Exactly.""
I looked at the medical records.
Something caught my eye.
A handwritten note dated March 1995.
Embryo transferred to surrogate mother. Biological mother: confidential.
I read the next line.
*Gestational carrier: Eleanor Carter.*
I looked up.
Grace was staring at the paper.
"That means...""
Daniel finished the sentence.
"Eleanor carried you.""
Grace backed away.
"No.""
Anthony looked at her.
"Yes.""
I turned toward him.
"Then who was her biological mother?""
Anthony smiled.
"Margaret.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I looked at Grace.
Then at Anthony.
Then at the documents.
"You're saying Margaret was Grace's biological mother too?""
Anthony nodded.
"She donated the embryo.""
Grace covered her mouth.
I looked at the medical report again.
There was another line.
*Biological father: Frank Russo.*
I felt my heart pounding.
That meant Anthony and Grace shared both biological parents.
They were full siblings.
And I was the child of Sarah Whitmore and Frank Russo.
I wasn't Margaret's biological son.
I wasn't Anthony's full brother.
And I wasn't the child Eleanor had claimed to adopt.
I turned toward the photograph of Frank.
"Who was Sarah Whitmore?""
Anthony looked uncomfortable.
"Your father's first wife.""
I stared at him.
"Was she alive?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where?""
Anthony slowly removed another photograph from his coat.
It showed an elderly woman sitting in a garden.
She had silver hair, a walking stick, and a familiar pair of eyes.
Beneath the photograph was an address.
A private residence in Greenwich.
My hands began shaking.
"Why didn't she come looking for me?""
Anthony's expression softened.
"Because she believed you were dead.""
I looked at him.
"Who told her?""
He hesitated.
Then Grace spoke.
"Eleanor.""
I closed my eyes.
Another lie.
Another stolen life.
Daniel picked up the medical records.
"Marcus, there's something else.""
I turned.
He pointed to the final page.
It was a laboratory authorization signed by Frank.
The document indicated that the original embryo transfer records had been sealed by court order.
But the order had been issued by a judge who had died twenty years earlier.
Daniel examined the signature.
"Something is wrong here.""
"What?""
"This judge never served in Connecticut.""
I looked at the document.
The court seal was from another state.
Massachusetts.
Daniel checked the file number.
Then he looked up.
"This wasn't a legal adoption proceeding.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What was it?""
He lowered his voice.
"An identity fraud investigation.""
Anthony stepped toward the door.
"We need to leave.""
I turned.
"Why?""
He looked at the hallway.
"Because the people who sealed those records have just found out we've opened them.""
Before anyone could move, the lights went out.
A heavy metallic sound echoed through the corridor.
Then the vault door slammed shut.
Grace screamed.
Daniel reached for his phone.
No signal.
A red emergency light flickered above the door.
Then a voice came through the small speaker in the ceiling.
"Good evening, Marcus.""
I froze.
I knew that voice.
It was the same man who had called me after the cake appeared.
The same man who had warned me to ask Eleanor who gave birth to me.
"Who are you?"" I shouted.
A quiet laugh answered.
"Someone who has been waiting for you to find the truth.""
I stepped toward the speaker.
"Show yourself.""
The voice continued.
"Your father made one final mistake, Marcus. He believed that if he changed enough names, he could change the truth.""
A pause.
Then the man spoke again.
"But he forgot one thing.""
"What?""
"Sarah Whitmore is not your mother.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
The speaker crackled.
"And tomorrow, when you meet the woman who gave birth to you, you'll understand why three families have spent thirty-five years trying to keep you away from her.""
A loud bang sounded behind the vault door.
Then everything went silent.
Grace grabbed my arm.
"Marcus...""
I turned toward her.
She was staring at the final document.
At the bottom, beneath the forged court seal, was a name.
The name of the person who had authorized the entire identity transfer.
*VANESSA CARTER.*
My wife.
The woman who had been standing in my house, crying, while the cake with the name MRS. RUSSO sat on our dining table.
She hadn't simply known about the family secret.
She had been part of it from the beginning.
And suddenly, I understood why Anthony had married her.
He hadn't married Vanessa to get close to my money.
May you like
He had married her because she was the only person who knew where the original records were hidden.
And she had just betrayed every one of us.
