Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything

The flash drive sat on my desk for twenty minutes before I found the courage to plug it in.

Vanessa stood beside the bedroom door.

Eleanor had gone upstairs and refused to come down.

I had called my attorney, Daniel Brooks, and told him to come immediately.

But there was one thing I needed to hear before anyone else arrived.

I opened the audio file.

A timestamp appeared on the screen.

November 18.

Eleven months earlier.

Then Vanessa's voice filled the room.

"I don't care what Eleanor promised you. I want this finished.""

A man's voice answered.

Anthony.

"You're getting impatient.""

"I've been patient for years.""

"You knew the arrangement when you married him.""

"I married him because I thought you would disappear.""

A chair scraped across the floor.

Anthony laughed.

"You always did know how to make people feel disposable.""

Vanessa's voice grew sharper.

"Where is the money?""

"Safe.""

"That's not an answer.""

"Your husband approved the transfer.""

"He doesn't know what he's approving.""

"Then perhaps you should be more careful.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

"Once Eleanor is out of the way, everything becomes easier.""

I stopped the recording.

My hands were trembling.

I replayed the last sentence.

Once Eleanor is out of the way.

I looked toward the bedroom door.

Vanessa stood there with tears running down her cheeks.

"Who were you talking about?""

She shook her head.

"Marcus, please.""

"Answer me.""

"Your mother was threatening to expose everything.""

"What everything?""

"She had discovered that Anthony was still contacting me. She wanted me to leave you.""

"And?""

Vanessa looked down.

"I told Anthony I wanted her gone.""

"Did you mean dead?""

"No!""

Her voice broke.

"I meant gone from our lives. I wanted her to stop interfering.""

I stared at her.

"Why would she interfere?""

"Because she knew about the inheritance.""

I sat down.

"Tell me.""

Vanessa approached the desk.

She looked exhausted.

Her makeup had disappeared, and her hair hung loosely around her face.

"When Anthony first contacted me, he told me Margaret had left you money. He said your father had taken it. He wanted help recovering it.""

"And you agreed?""

"I didn't understand how much money was involved.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She swallowed.

"Yes.""

I turned toward the computer.

"Why?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Anthony.""

She pressed her hands together.

"He told me that if I didn't help him, he would expose our marriage. He said he would destroy your reputation and make sure you lost everything.""

I looked at her.

"Your marriage to him?""

She nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was afraid you'd leave.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You were afraid I'd leave because you were still married to another man?""

Vanessa began crying again.

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds exactly like what happened.""

She looked at the flash drive.

"There's more.""

I turned back to her.

"What?""

"The recording.""

I pressed play.

The voices continued.

Anthony spoke first.

"Your mother-in-law is becoming a problem.""

Vanessa answered quietly.

"She's always been a problem.""

"She knows about the trust.""

"She knows about the money. She doesn't know about the other account.""

"What account?""

"The one Richard opened.""

I froze.

Richard was my father.

Anthony's voice became serious.

"Does Marcus know?""

"No.""

"Then keep it that way.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"If he finds out what happened to Margaret, he'll never forgive Eleanor.""

Anthony laughed.

"Your mother-in-law deserves whatever happens.""

Then Vanessa said:

"I just need the original documents. Once I have them, I can make sure nobody gets hurt.""

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Nobody gets hurt.

It sounded harmless.

But something about the way she had said it made my skin crawl.

I turned to her.

"What original documents?""

She wiped her face.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie.""

"I swear.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

"Marcus, I'm outside.""

I let him in.

He was a tall, broad-shouldered man in his early fifties, with silver hair and the calm manner of someone who had spent decades watching people ruin their lives through bad decisions.

He placed his briefcase on the desk.

"What's happened?""

I handed him the marriage certificate, the trust documents, and the flash drive.

He examined everything without speaking.

After several minutes, he looked up.

"Where did you get these?""

"From my wife.""

He glanced at Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you something.""

She nodded.

"Are you still legally married to Anthony Russo?""

She looked down.

"I don't know.""

Daniel removed his glasses.

"That's not a good answer.""

"I thought the divorce had been finalized.""

"Did you receive a signed decree?""

"No.""

"Did you attend a hearing?""

"No.""

"Then we need to verify your marital status immediately.""

Vanessa began crying again.

Daniel turned toward me.

"There's another problem.""

He pointed at the trust documents.

"These papers suggest your biological mother established a trust for you. If the funds were improperly transferred, we need to trace every transaction.""

"Can you do that?""

"Yes. But I need access to the original records.""

I remembered the letter.

My father's handwriting.

The hidden message.

Anthony knows what happened to Margaret, but he does not know the full truth.

I retrieved it from the drawer.

Daniel read it carefully.

Then he looked at me.

"Did your father leave any other instructions?""

I shook my head.

He examined the paper under the desk lamp.

"Wait.""

He turned it over.

There was a faint impression beneath the signature.

A series of numbers.

I leaned closer.

"What is that?""

Daniel ran his finger over the marks.

"It looks like a safe deposit box reference.""

I read the numbers aloud.

"Fourteen. Twenty-seven. Eight.""

Daniel looked up.

"Does your father have a safe deposit box?""

"He did. At First National.""

"Is it still active?""

"I don't know.""

Daniel closed the letter.

"We need to find out.""

At that moment, Eleanor entered the room.

She looked at the documents scattered across my desk.

Then she noticed the flash drive.

Her expression changed.

"You listened to it.""

I nodded.

"Why did you want me to stay away from the truth?""

She approached slowly.

"Because I knew what it would do to you.""

"Who was Richard talking about in that letter?""

She looked at the numbers.

For a moment, she appeared confused.

Then she recognized them.

"Oh, no.""

I stepped closer.

"What?""

She sat down heavily.

"Your father gave me that number.""

"For what?""

She covered her mouth.

"Marcus, please don't go to that bank.""

"Why?""

"Because the box contains something your father never wanted anyone to find.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She looked directly at me.

"Your birth records.""

I frowned.

"I know I was adopted.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"No. You don't understand.""

Her voice dropped.

"The papers in that box will tell you who your biological father was.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Richard?""

She shook her head again.

"Your father wasn't Richard Carter.""

I couldn't move.

Daniel slowly closed his briefcase.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I looked at Eleanor.

"Then who was he?""

She began crying.

And this time, she didn't try to hide it.

"Margaret had another relationship before Richard met her. A man who disappeared before you were born.""

"Who?""

Eleanor stared at me.

"Your biological father was the man who built this family.""

I shook my head.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It does.""

"Who was he?""

She whispered a name.

A name I had seen on the sign outside my father's old office.

A name printed on the original documents of Carter Development Holdings.

A name that had appeared on the cake delivery receipt.

*Anthony Russo's father.*

I stepped backward.

"You're telling me Anthony and I have the same father?""

Eleanor nodded.

"But that's impossible. Anthony is my half-brother.""

She looked at me with desperate eyes.

"No, Marcus. Anthony is your biological brother.""

I felt the room spinning.

"Then why did you say Margaret was my mother?""

"Because she was.""

"Who was my father?""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Frank Russo.""

The name hit me like a physical blow.

Frank Russo had been the founder of the company.

The man whose name had disappeared from its records.

The man Richard Carter had claimed to be his business partner.

The man whose portrait had hung in the company's original headquarters before it was replaced.

I stared at my mother.

"Why did everyone call him Richard?""

Eleanor's answer was barely audible.

"Because Richard Carter was the name Frank Russo used after he disappeared.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel slowly opened his briefcase again.

"Marcus, I think we have a much bigger problem than an inheritance dispute.""

He placed a printed company record on my desk.

The document showed the original ownership structure of Carter Development Holdings.

There were three names.

Frank Russo.

Margaret Russo.

And a third person.

Eleanor Carter.

My mother had not merely been protecting a family secret.

She had been one of the original owners of the company.

And according to the document, she had signed away her shares the day after my adoption.

I looked at her.

"Why?""

She began shaking.

"Because Frank made me promise to protect you.""

"From whom?""

She looked toward the window.

Then she whispered:

"From Anthony.""

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from the unknown number.

This time, there was a photograph attached.

It showed an elderly woman sitting in a wheelchair outside a nursing home.

Her hair was silver.

Her face was thin.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Margaret Russo.

May you like

Beneath the photograph was one sentence.

*Your mother is alive, Marcus. And she's been waiting thirty-five years to tell you why your father chose you instead of Anthony.*
