Chapter 2: The Drawer Beneath Her Secrets
At 2:17 a.m., I stood barefoot in my wife's dressing room, holding a small brass key.
I had found it inside the pocket of an old handbag Vanessa hadn't used in years.
The key turned easily.
The drawer slid open.
Inside were silk scarves, jewelry boxes, and a collection of old photographs. Everything looked ordinary until I noticed the wooden panel at the bottom.
It was slightly uneven.
I pressed my thumb against one corner.
The panel lifted.
Beneath it sat a flat black envelope.
My name was written across the front.
*MARCUS CARTER.*
For several seconds, I couldn't bring myself to open it.
The house was silent.
Rain tapped against the windows, and somewhere downstairs, the refrigerator hummed.
I finally pulled out the contents.
The first document was a marriage certificate.
The date was October 18, 2012.
The location was a small county courthouse in New York.
The bride's name was Vanessa Marie Bennett.
The groom's name was Anthony Russo.
I read the names again.
Then a third time.
The signature at the bottom belonged to my wife.
There was no mistake.
Vanessa had married another man five years before she married me.
I sat on the edge of the dressing room bench.
My chest felt tight.
Our wedding anniversary was October 18.
The date I had believed marked the beginning of our marriage.
But according to the document in my hands, Vanessa had already been married on that exact date years earlier.
I turned the page.
There was a photograph.
Vanessa stood beside a tall, dark-haired man outside a courthouse. She wore a simple ivory dress. He had one arm around her waist.
They were smiling.
Not politely.
Not for a camera.
They looked happy.
Behind the photograph was a handwritten note.
To my wife, Vanessa. No matter what happens, you will always be Mrs. Russo.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
My fingers began to shake.
I searched the envelope for more documents.
There were bank statements, copies of identification cards, and several photographs taken at different times.
One showed Vanessa sitting in a restaurant with the same man.
Another showed them standing outside a house in Westchester.
The last photograph was dated only eight months earlier.
Vanessa was kissing him.
I stared at it until the numbers blurred.
Eight months.
While I was attending business conferences, signing construction contracts, and telling people how lucky I was to have a wonderful marriage, my wife had apparently been meeting another man.
My phone buzzed.
A message from the same unknown number.
*You found it. Now look at the last page.*
I returned to the envelope.
There was one more document.
A copy of a bank transfer.
The amount was $850,000.
The recipient was Anthony Russo.
The sender was a company I owned.
Carter Development Holdings.
I checked the date.
The transfer had been made eleven months earlier.
I knew that transaction.
Or at least, I thought I did.
My chief financial officer had asked me to approve an emergency payment for a property acquisition. He had told me the money was going to a construction partner.
I had signed the authorization electronically.
But the account number on the document was different.
Someone had redirected the money.
And Vanessa's initials appeared beside the approval.
I heard a floorboard creak.
I looked toward the doorway.
Vanessa stood there wearing a white silk robe.
Her hair was loose around her shoulders.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she looked at the open drawer.
Her eyes moved to the marriage certificate in my hand.
"Oh, God.""
I stood.
"Who is Anthony Russo?""
She closed the door behind her.
"Marcus, please put those documents away.""
"Who is he?""
"He's someone from my past.""
"Your past?""
I held up the marriage certificate.
"You married him.""
She looked down.
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Before I met you.""
"Then why are you still hiding this?""
She took a step closer.
"Because I didn't want it to affect us.""
"You're married to him?""
She hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
I placed the certificate on the dresser.
"Vanessa.""
"I don't know.""
"What do you mean you don't know?""
"We separated years ago.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She pressed her fingers against her forehead.
"Anthony and I had problems. We were young. Things became complicated.""
"Did you divorce him?""
She looked away.
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
"You didn't.""
"It wasn't that simple.""
I laughed once, without humor.
"Marriage is actually very simple. Either you're divorced or you're not.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Marcus, I love you.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I never intended for this to happen.""
"What happened to him?""
She remained silent.
I picked up the bank transfer.
"And why did my company send him $850,000?""
Her head snapped up.
"Where did you get that?""
"From your secret drawer.""
"That money has nothing to do with our marriage.""
"It came from my company.""
"It was an investment.""
"Into what?""
She didn't answer.
I moved toward the dressing table.
"Was he blackmailing you?""
Her expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something that looked almost like relief.
"Yes," she whispered.
I stopped.
"What?""
"Anthony was threatening to expose everything. He said he would come to your office. He said he would tell your mother.""
"Tell her what?""
Vanessa began crying.
"I paid him to leave us alone.""
"With my money?""
"I was going to replace it.""
"When?""
"Soon.""
I stared at her.
"You stole nearly a million dollars from my company to pay your husband?""
She flinched.
"Don't call him that.""
I stepped closer.
"What should I call him, Vanessa? Your ex-husband? Your boyfriend? The man you were kissing eight months ago?""
Her face crumpled.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain it.""
She looked toward the bedroom door.
"I can explain everything tomorrow.""
"No.""
"Marcus, please.""
"Now.""
She shook her head.
Then she said something that made my entire body go still.
"Anthony isn't the only person who knows.""
I waited.
"Who else knows?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Your mother.""
I felt as though the floor had shifted beneath me.
"My mother?""
She nodded.
"Eleanor knew about Anthony before we got married.""
I stared at her.
"You're lying.""
"She helped me.""
"Helped you do what?""
Vanessa looked down at the marriage certificate.
"She helped me make sure you would never find out.""
I couldn't speak.
My mother had been in our home that evening.
She had watched the cake arrive.
She had heard the name Russo.
And she hadn't looked surprised.
She had looked frightened.
I took out my phone and called her.
It rang twice.
Then she answered.
"Marcus? Is everything all right?""
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at the marriage certificate.
"No, Mom. It isn't.""
A pause.
"What happened?""
I lowered my voice.
"Why did you help Vanessa hide her first marriage?""
There was silence on the other end.
Then my mother's voice became barely audible.
"Because your father made me promise.""
I closed my eyes.
"My father died twelve years ago.""
"I know.""
"Then what does he have to do with Anthony Russo?""
My mother took a shaky breath.
"Marcus, listen to me carefully. Anthony wasn't just Vanessa's husband.""
I looked at my wife.
"What was he?""
My mother whispered six words.
May you like
And suddenly, the secret in that drawer became much bigger than an affair.
"Anthony was your father's son.""
