Chapter 13: My Wife Was the Architect
The name at the bottom of the document wouldn't stop staring back at me.
*VANESSA CARTER.*
My wife.
The woman who had shared my bed for seven years.
The woman who had stood beside me at business dinners, kissed me goodbye before work, and celebrated every anniversary as though our marriage were something sacred.
She had signed the document that controlled my identity.
"Marcus," Grace whispered, "what does this mean?""
I couldn't answer.
Anthony was examining the vault door.
Daniel was trying to get a signal on his phone.
I remained frozen, staring at Vanessa's signature.
Then I noticed something beneath it.
A date.
October 18, 2019.
Our wedding anniversary.
The document had been signed on the same day Vanessa and I celebrated our second year of marriage.
I felt physically sick.
"She knew," I whispered.
Anthony turned.
"Of course she knew.""
I looked at him.
"How long?""
"Since before you met her.""
"Why?""
Anthony gave a humorless laugh.
"Because Vanessa was never supposed to be your wife.""
I grabbed his coat.
"Explain.""
He didn't resist.
"Your father created a trust that could only be accessed by someone carrying the Carter identity. Vanessa was supposed to marry you, gain access to the family records, and help me recover the original ownership documents.""
"Who arranged it?""
"Frank.""
I released him.
"Frank arranged my marriage?""
Anthony nodded.
"He believed you would eventually discover the truth. He wanted someone close to you who could control what you found.""
I looked at Grace.
She appeared horrified.
"You're saying Frank planned all of this?""
Anthony nodded.
"Every part of it.""
Daniel finally got his phone working.
He called the building's security office and demanded that someone open the vault.
While he waited, I looked at Anthony.
"Then why did you marry Vanessa?""
His expression changed.
"Because I loved her.""
I almost laughed.
"That's a terrible excuse.""
"Maybe. But I didn't know she was going to fall in love with you.""
I stared at him.
"Did she?""
Anthony looked away.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain.
"She told me she did.""
The vault door suddenly unlocked.
A security guard opened it from the other side.
We rushed into the corridor.
Daniel immediately contacted the police.
I called Vanessa.
She answered on the second ring.
"Marcus?""
"Where are you?""
A pause.
"At home.""
"Don't move.""
"What's happened?""
I looked at the document in my hand.
"Why is your signature on the identity transfer papers?""
Silence.
Then she whispered:
"You found the vault.""
I closed my eyes.
"Answer me.""
"I can explain.""
"Did you know who I was before we married?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know Frank had arranged our marriage?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know I wasn't his biological son?""
She began crying.
"Yes.""
I leaned against the wall.
Seven years.
Seven years of believing I had married someone who loved me.
"Why did you do it?""
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"Because I thought I could save you.""
I laughed bitterly.
"From what?""
"From Anthony.""
I looked toward him.
He was watching me.
Vanessa continued.
"Frank told me Anthony was dangerous. He said Anthony would destroy the company if he ever got control. He wanted me to keep you away from the original records.""
"By marrying me?""
"Yes.""
"And the marriage to Anthony?""
She went silent.
"Marcus, that happened before.""
"You were still married to him when we met.""
"I know.""
"Did you ever divorce him?""
"No.""
I closed my eyes.
Then she said something that made my grip tighten around the phone.
"Marcus, listen to me. Frank didn't arrange our marriage because he wanted to protect you.""
"Then why?""
"Because he needed you to take responsibility for something he had done.""
"What?""
"An accident.""
I stopped breathing.
"What accident?""
Vanessa whispered:
"The night Richard Carter died.""
I stared at the floor.
"Frank killed him?""
"No. Eleanor did.""
"I know.""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"But Eleanor didn't kill him accidentally.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"What are you saying?""
"Richard was your biological father.""
The corridor seemed to disappear.
I gripped the phone.
"That's impossible.""
"Frank wasn't your father, Marcus. He was your stepfather. He stole Richard's identity after Eleanor killed him.""
I looked toward Grace.
She was watching my face.
Vanessa continued.
"Richard was married to Sarah Whitmore. They had a son. You.""
My mind raced.
"Then why did you say Sarah wasn't my mother?""
"Because she wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.""
I couldn't speak.
"Margaret was your biological mother," Vanessa whispered.
"Richard was your biological father. Frank arranged the fertility transfer. He used Margaret's egg and Richard's genetic material.""
I stared at the phone.
"Then who was Sarah?""
"Your legal mother. The woman who raised you before Eleanor took you.""
My entire life had been rewritten again.
"Why did Eleanor take me?""
"Because she wanted Richard's inheritance. After he died, she and Frank created a new identity for you. They needed you to become the heir without revealing that Richard had been murdered.""
I looked at the document.
"And you?""
"I was hired to protect the arrangement.""
"Why?""
Vanessa started sobbing.
"Because my father owed Frank money. I was twenty-three. I thought I could handle it.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you ever love me?""
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she whispered:
"Yes.""
I ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel approached me.
"The police are coming. We need to leave.""
I nodded.
But Anthony grabbed my arm.
"Marcus, there's something else.""
I looked at him.
"What now?""
He removed a folded paper from his pocket.
It was a letter written in my father's handwriting.
"Frank left this with me years ago. He told me to give it to you when Vanessa's role was exposed.""
I unfolded it.
The letter was short.
Marcus, if you have reached this point, then Vanessa has failed to keep the truth hidden.
There is one final document.
It proves who Richard really was, who killed him, and why Eleanor was willing to sacrifice everyone to protect herself.
Do not trust the woman who calls herself your mother.
And whatever you do, do not let Grace sign the inheritance papers.
I looked up.
Grace had gone pale.
"Why would I sign anything?""
Anthony's face hardened.
"Because you're the only person who can legally claim the company.""
Before I could ask another question, Daniel's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
"Marcus, the police have released Eleanor.""
"What?""
"Her arrest warrant was withdrawn.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Because the person who filed the original complaint has just confessed to falsifying the evidence.""
"Who?""
Daniel looked at Anthony.
Then at me.
"Vanessa Carter.""
My phone vibrated again.
A message appeared.
*Come home alone, Marcus. I have the original birth certificate. And if you want to know who really killed Richard, you need to hear the truth from me.*
Beneath it was a photograph.
Vanessa stood in our dining room.
Beside her was the little chocolate cake.
The blue icing had been changed.
This time, the name written across the top was:
*MRS. CARTER.*
But the handwriting wasn't Vanessa's.
May you like
It belonged to someone else.
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
