Chapter 11: The Woman Who Wanted the Perfect Family
The second video was shorter.
Only three minutes.
But somehow, those three minutes felt heavier than everything else.
My mother pressed play.
The screen lit up again.
My father appeared.
This time, he looked angry.
Not confused.
Not worried.
Angry.
“Darius.””
He took a breath.
“I found something.””
The room became silent.
“I discovered that Simone’s interest in our family started before she met you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
My mother looked down.
I watched the screen.
My father continued.
“She researched our family before your relationship became serious.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
The video continued.
“She knew about our business. She knew about our finances. She knew about the family trust.””
I felt sick.
The family trust.
Something my father had created for Lily.
A protection fund.
A future safety net.
My father looked into the camera.
“Darius, I don’t want you to misunderstand. Knowing these things does not automatically make someone a bad person.””
He paused.
“But hiding why you know them does.””
I looked at my mother.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I believed her.
Because her face looked like mine.
Broken.
My father continued.
“She told me she wanted security.””
The word echoed.
Security.
“She told me she grew up without stability.””
I listened.
“And I understood that.””
My father’s voice softened.
“But I asked her one question.””
He leaned closer.
“I asked, ‘If Darius had no money, no house, no family name, would you still want him?’”
The video paused.
Then:
“Her answer was silence.””
Nobody moved.
My father continued.
“Silence can be an answer too.””
The video ended.
I sat there.
Not angry.
Not anymore.
Something worse.
Disappointed.
Because I wanted there to be a misunderstanding.
I wanted there to be some explanation that made everything easier.
But every answer created another question.
My mother sat beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For not telling you.””
I nodded.
“That matters.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
She looked hurt.
But I continued.
“Everyone keeps saying they were trying to protect me.””
I looked around the room.
“But nobody protected me from the truth.””
My mother lowered her head.
That was the hardest part.
Not betrayal.
Silence.
The people who loved me saw something wrong happening.
And instead of trusting me enough to handle it, they made decisions for me.
A knock came at the door.
Everyone looked up.
I knew who it was before I saw her.
Simone.
She stood outside.
Alone.
No wedding dress.
No makeup team.
No perfect image.
Just a woman who looked exhausted.
“Darius.””
I stepped outside.
My mother stayed inside.
I didn’t want Lily hearing this.
“What do you want?””
Simone looked at me.
“I want to tell you the truth.””
I almost smiled.
“Now?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why now?””
“Because I know I’m losing you.””
I stared at her.
“Is that the only reason?””
“No.””
She looked down.
“I’m ashamed.””
That surprised me.
“I should have told you everything.””
“Yes.””
“I should never have touched Lily’s hair.””
“Yes.””
“I should have talked to you.””
“Yes.””
She cried quietly.
“I was jealous.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“Of my daughter?””
She nodded.
“I hated that I felt that way.””
I didn’t speak.
She continued.
“When I met you, you were this incredible father. Everyone loved you because of how much you loved her.””
“That’s a bad thing?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It was beautiful.””
Then she whispered:
“But I was afraid there would never be room for me.””
I looked at her.
“There was.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“There was room. You just wanted her to move.””
She closed her eyes.
Because she knew.
“I wanted to be your first priority.””
“You were never supposed to replace her.””
“I know.””
She wiped her tears.
“I know that now.””
I believed she was sorry.
But sorry didn’t erase what happened.
Then she said something that made me freeze.
“There’s one thing your father didn’t know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“My past relationship.””
My expression changed.
“What about it?””
She looked away.
“The man I was engaged to…”
She swallowed.
“He’s Lily’s biological uncle.””
The world seemed to stop.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I never told you because I was afraid.””
My mind raced.
“How?””
She whispered:
“Because the man your father investigated…”
May you like
A tear rolled down her face.
“Was my brother.””
