Chapter 13: The Truth Simone Buried

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was angry.

Anger would have been easier.

Anger has direction.

It tells you who to blame.

What I felt was something heavier.

Confusion.

Because every person I trusted had given me a different version of the truth.

My mother said she was protecting me.

My father said he was warning me.

Simone said she was afraid.

Julian said everyone was lying.

And in the middle of all of it was Lily.

A seven-year-old girl who just wanted to know if she still belonged.

The next morning, I sat at my mother’s kitchen table with a cup of coffee that had gone cold.

Lily was upstairs with Nia.

She was drawing.

Nia told me she had been drawing the same picture over and over.

A house.

Four people.

Me.

Her.

Nia.

And a blank space.

The blank space hurt more than anything.

“Darius.””

I looked up.

Simone stood in the doorway.

She looked nothing like the woman who walked into the bridal room that morning.

No makeup.

No perfect dress.

No confident smile.

Just someone carrying the weight of every choice she had made.

“I need to tell you everything.””

I looked at her.

“Why should I believe you now?””

She nodded slowly.

“You shouldn’t.””

That surprised me.

She walked closer.

“But you should hear it.””

I didn’t answer.

She sat across from me.

“When Julian called you, he was right about one thing.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Which is?””

“I wasn’t completely honest.””

The honesty made me uncomfortable.

Because part of me wanted to hear an excuse.

Something that made everything less painful.

Instead, she gave me the truth.

“My brother didn’t disappear.””

I stayed silent.

“He went to prison.””

The room went quiet.

“For what?””

She looked down.

“Fraud.””

I waited.

“And violence.””

My jaw tightened.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“Not at first.””

She looked at her hands.

“When I found out, I left.””

“Why hide that from me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I shook my head.

“Shame explains hiding your past.””

I leaned forward.

“It doesn’t explain Lily.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Then explain that.””

She took a breath.

“When I met you, I loved how you protected her.””

I looked away.

“But?””

She swallowed.

“But I started comparing myself to her.””

The words hurt.

Not because they surprised me.

Because they were exactly what I feared.

“She had your whole heart.””

“Yes.””

“And I wanted some of that.””

“You had it.””

“I know.””

She wiped a tear.

“But I didn’t believe I did.””

I sat back.

“Simone.””

She looked up.

“You don’t get to hurt someone because you’re afraid they have something you want.””

“I know.””

“You don’t get to make a child smaller because you feel insecure.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I know that now.””

For the first time, I saw something different.

Not manipulation.

Regret.

But regret was not the same as repair.

“What did Julian mean when he said you chose my family?””

She became quiet.

Too quiet.

Then she answered.

“At first?””

I waited.

“At first, I did notice your family’s position.””

My stomach dropped.

She continued before I could react.

“I grew up watching people struggle. I thought security meant never being afraid again.””

“And then?””

“Then I met you.””

She looked at me.

“And you changed what I thought I wanted.””

I didn’t know whether to believe that.

“I loved you.””

I nodded slowly.

“But you still planned around my money.””

“Yes.””

“You still planned around my family.””

“Yes.””

“And you still tried to change my daughter.””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

But necessary.

Then she reached into her bag.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“What is that?””

“Something I should have given you months ago.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From Julian.

My hands tightened.

“He sent that to you?””

“No.””

“Then why do you have it?””

“Because I found it among my brother’s things.””

I looked at the first line.

My name.

Darius Carter.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

She whispered:

“The reason your father became suspicious.””

I read.

The letter wasn’t a threat.

It was a confession.

Julian had written about Simone.

About their childhood.

About how she always wanted to escape.

But the final paragraph made my blood run cold.

She doesn’t want Darius because of his money anymore.

I stopped.

Simone looked away.

I continued.

She wants him because he represents the family she never had.

I lowered the paper.

That wasn’t an excuse.

But it was the missing piece.

She wasn’t only chasing wealth.

She was chasing belonging.

And she had destroyed someone else’s belonging trying to create her own.

Then I saw the final sentence.

But if she loses control, she becomes exactly like the people she ran from.

I looked at Simone.

She was crying.

Because she knew.

She had spent years escaping a controlling family.

Only to become controlling herself.

A sound came from the stairs.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

Lily stood there.

Holding her drawing.

I immediately stood.

“Hey, baby.””

She looked at Simone.

Then at me.

“I finished my picture.””

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

It was the same house.

But this time, the blank space was gone.

There was someone standing there.

Simone.

I looked at Lily.

“You added her.””

She nodded.

“She said sorry.””

Simone covered her mouth.

“But I’m still scared.””

The words were simple.

Honest.

Simone nodded.

“I know.””

Lily looked at her.

“Are you going to cut my hair again?””

Simone’s face broke.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“Never.””

Lily nodded.

Then asked:

“Are you going to leave?””

Simone looked at me.

Then back at Lily.

“I don’t know what happens next.””

May you like

That was the first truly honest answer.

And somehow, it was the first one that felt safe.
