Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden Before the Vows

For the first time all morning, nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because everyone was afraid of what came next.

I looked at Marcus.

“Call her.””

He nodded.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then my mother answered.

“Darius.””

“Tell me.””

She didn’t ask what I meant.

She knew.

“Your father found something before he passed.””

I looked at Simone.

She immediately looked away.

“What?””

My mother took a breath.

“Something about Simone’s past.””

The room changed.

Not because I suddenly trusted Simone less.

Because I realized there was another layer.

Another secret.

Another thing hidden from me.

“What did he find?””

My mother was quiet.

Then:

“She had been married before.””

Simone closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

“You told me you were never married.””

Her face turned pale.

“I wasn’t.””

My mother interrupted.

“Darius, let me explain.””

I kept staring at Simone.

“You said you weren’t married.””

“I wasn’t.””

“Then what is this?””

Simone looked terrified.

“My father?””

My mother continued.

“She was engaged.””

I waited.

That sounded important.

But not enough.

“Why would that matter?””

My mother’s voice dropped.

“Because the man she was engaged to disappeared.””

The room went silent.

Nobody moved.

“What?””

“I don’t know all the details.””

“Then why was my father involved?””

“Because he thought you were moving too quickly.””

I looked at Simone.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer.

That was becoming her pattern.

Silence.

Avoidance.

Secrets.

“Simone.””

She finally spoke.

“He was my fiancé.””

The words felt strange.

Not because she had a past.

Everyone had a past.

Because she had looked me in the eyes and erased that part of her life.

“What happened?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t want to talk about him.””

“That’s not your choice anymore.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That you would see me differently.””

I nodded slowly.

“And instead, you decided to let me see a version of you that wasn’t real.””

She cried.

“I loved you.””

“Maybe.””

The word hurt her.

But I continued.

“Maybe you did.””

I looked at Lily.

“But love doesn’t survive without truth.””

My mother spoke again.

“Darius.””

“What?””

“There’s more.””

Of course there was.

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another piece.

“What more?””

She hesitated.

“Your father didn’t just investigate Simone.””

I waited.

“He investigated her relationship with Lily.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he noticed something.””

“What?””

My mother’s voice became softer.

“Simone wasn’t acting like someone trying to become Lily’s mother.””

I looked at Simone.

“She was acting like someone trying to remove an obstacle.””

Simone immediately shook her head.

“No.””

But nobody believed her anymore.

Not because she was definitely guilty of everything.

Because she had given us too many reasons to doubt.

I walked closer.

“Tell me the truth.””

“I am.””

“Then why did you hide your engagement?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Why did you plan my daughter’s school?””

“Because I thought—”

“No.””

I stopped her.

“That’s the problem.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“You keep saying what you thought.””

I lowered my voice.

“But you never asked what she felt.””

Simone looked at Lily.

For the first time, guilt appeared on her face.

Real guilt.

She whispered:

“Lily.””

My daughter looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology surprised everyone.

Especially me.

Because I had expected excuses.

Not regret.

But Lily didn’t move.

She simply held my hand.

And I understood.

Sorry mattered.

But trust took longer.

Then my mother said something that made my blood run cold.

“Darius.””

“What?””

“There’s one final thing your father left behind.””

I waited.

“A video.””

The room froze.

“What kind of video?””

“A message.””

“About Simone?””

“No.””

My mother paused.

“About the day he met Lily.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with this?””

My mother’s voice shook.

“Everything.””

The call ended.

Not because she hung up.

Because the signal dropped.

I looked at everyone.

Then at my daughter.

Then at the wedding dress.

A wedding that had started with a lie.

And suddenly I wondered if the biggest secret wasn’t what Simone had done.

Maybe it was what my father had seen.

May you like

Because whatever was in that video had been important enough for him to leave behind.

And I had a feeling I was about to find out why.
