Chapter 12: The Connection Nobody Saw
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Not because I didn’t have questions.
Because I had too many.
Simone’s brother.
The missing fiancé.
My father’s investigation.
The secrets.
The wedding.
The plan.
Everything was suddenly connected by a thread I couldn’t see.
“What does your brother have to do with Lily?””
Simone looked terrified.
“Nothing.””
I stared at her.
“Nothing?””
“He never met her.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because of what happened.””
“What happened?””
She took a breath.
“He wasn’t a good person.””
I waited.
“He hurt people.””
The words were quiet.
But serious.
“Who?””
She looked away.
“My family.””
That answer confused me.
“Explain.””
Simone sat down on the porch steps.
I stayed standing.
“When we were younger, my brother controlled everything. He controlled my parents. He controlled me.””
She looked at her hands.
“When I finally left, I changed my name.””
I frowned.
“Your name?””
“Part of it.””
I thought about my father’s words.
Research.
Security.
A hidden past.
“How did my father find out?””
“Because my brother contacted him.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
Simone’s face changed.
“He wanted money.””
There it was.
The piece that explained the fear.
“What did he threaten?””
She looked at me.
“He said if I didn’t pay him, he would tell everyone about my past.””
I watched her carefully.
“And you were afraid that would include me.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought you would leave.””
I looked toward the house.
At Lily.
At the life I had built.
“You made the decision for me.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
That was the pattern.
Everyone around me kept making decisions because they thought they knew what was best.
Nobody asked.
Nobody trusted.
Nobody listened.
I looked at Simone.
“What did my father know about your brother?””
She swallowed.
“He knew enough.””
“How much?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
My first instinct was to ignore it.
But something stopped me.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice.
Cold.
Confident.
“Darius Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Julian.””
I froze.
Simone’s face changed.
She recognized the voice.
“Who is this?””
The man laughed softly.
“You really don’t know?””
I looked at Simone.
She whispered:
“My brother.””
The air disappeared.
Julian continued.
“I’ve been trying to reach Simone for weeks.””
I didn’t speak.
“She told you everything?””
“No.””
A pause.
Then:
“She never does.””
Simone stepped closer.
“Darius, hang up.””
But I didn’t.
Because I needed answers.
“Why are you calling me?””
Julian laughed again.
“Because you’re about to make the biggest mistake of your life.””
My jaw tightened.
“What mistake?””
“Believing Simone is the victim.””
Simone went pale.
Julian continued.
“You think she’s hiding because she’s afraid of me?””
Silence.
“Darius…”
I ignored Simone.
“Then why is she hiding?””
Julian’s voice lowered.
“Because she knows what she did.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
A pause.
Then:
“Ask her why she really chose your family.””
I looked at Simone.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
Julian continued:
“Ask her why your father started investigating her.””
My heart pounded.
“I already know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The line went quiet.
Then he said:
“You know the story your father found.””
A pause.
“But you don’t know the story Simone buried.””
The call ended.
I stood there holding the phone.
Simone looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time all day…
I wondered if we had been wrong about who was hiding the biggest secret.
