Chapter 6: The Name Written in the Plan

I followed Nia back toward the waiting area.

Every step felt heavier.

I kept telling myself not to assume.

Not to jump to conclusions.

But every new piece of information was another crack in the picture I had built of Simone.

The woman I thought I knew.

The woman I thought would protect my daughter.

The woman I thought would become part of our family.

Lily sat on a small chair near the window.

Her flower crown rested beside her.

She wasn’t wearing it anymore.

Nia stood beside her holding a folded piece of paper.

“I didn’t want her to read it,” Nia said.

“But she did.””

I looked at Lily.

“Baby?””

She looked up.

“I wasn’t trying to.””

Her voice was small.

“I just saw my name.””

I crouched beside her.

“What did you see?””

She looked at Nia.

Then handed me the paper.

It was a printed schedule.

A wedding preparation checklist.

Most of it was normal.

Photos.

Ceremony.

Reception.

Family introductions.

Then I saw the section near the bottom.

A heading.

*After Marriage Transition Plan.*

My hands went cold.

Under it were bullet points.

New home routines.

Family adjustments.

School transition.

And one line:

*Reduce emotional dependence on father.*

I stared at those words.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Because it wasn’t written by someone who didn’t understand children.

It was written by someone who understood exactly what they were doing.

I looked at Simone.

She had followed us.

She stood frozen.

“Explain.””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“Explain that sentence.””

“It’s not what it looks like.””

“Then what is it?””

She looked desperate.

“I was trying to create balance.””

“Balance?””

I held up the paper.

“You wrote that my seven-year-old daughter needs less attachment to her father.””

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“How did you mean it?””

Silence.

That was the answer again.

Lily looked at the paper.

“Daddy…”

I folded it immediately.

“Don’t worry about this.””

“But she wants you to love her less.””

My heart broke.

“No.””

I touched her hand.

“Listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“There is nothing you could ever do that would make me love you less.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I know.””

That hurt.

Because she said it like she had needed to hear it for a long time.

Simone watched us.

Then whispered:

“I never wanted this.””

I stood.

“Then what did you want?””

She wiped her face.

“I wanted us to be a family.””

“We already were.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You and Lily were a family.””

There it was.

The truth she had been hiding.

I stared at her.

“You felt like an outsider.””

She looked away.

“I felt like there was no room for me.””

I nodded slowly.

“And instead of asking for more love, you tried to take some away from my daughter.””

She cried harder.

But I didn’t move.

Because there were moments when understanding someone didn’t mean excusing them.

“I could have fixed that,” I said.

She looked at me.

“What?””

“If you had told me you felt left out, we could have talked.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“But you didn’t talk.””

My voice lowered.

“You planned.””

The room was quiet.

Then Marcus walked in.

He held a phone in his hand.

“Darius.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He hesitated.

“I found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He looked at Simone.

Then at me.

“It’s from the wedding coordinator.””

Simone’s face changed instantly.

“What did she send you?””

Marcus looked confused.

“She sent me the updated guest seating arrangement.””

“And?””

He handed me the phone.

I looked down.

At first, it seemed normal.

Until I saw the table assignments.

Family.

Friends.

Then a note at the bottom.

A note that wasn’t meant for me.

*Final arrangement after ceremony: Darius, Simone, and immediate family. Lily transition begins afterward.*

I stared at the words.

“Transition begins afterward.””

I looked up.

“Simone.””

She was crying now.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I think I understand.””

But before I could say anything else, Marcus looked at the screen again.

His expression changed.

“Darius…”

“What?””

“There’s a second page.””

I took the phone back.

Scrolled down.

And saw the name of the person who approved the plan.

Not Simone.

Not Renee.

Someone else.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been smiling beside me all morning.

My hand went completely still.

May you like

Because the person who signed it was—

*my own mother.*
