Chapter 8: The Family Meeting I Never Had
My father had been gone for five years.
But somehow, standing in that hallway, it felt like he had just walked into the room.
Not because he was there.
Because his name carried weight.
My father was the kind of man people listened to.
A businessman.
A provider.
A man who believed every problem could be solved if you made the right plan.
Growing up, I admired him.
I wanted to become him.
Until I became a father.
Then I realized something.
Being a father wasn’t about controlling a family.
It was about protecting one.
“Darius,” Simone said quietly.
I looked at her.
“When?””
She knew exactly what I meant.
“When did my father become involved?””
She looked down.
“Before we got engaged.””
I felt my heart sink.
Before we got engaged.
Before the ring.
Before the wedding.
Before I thought I was making a choice.
“How much did he know?””
“Everything.””
The hallway went silent.
I walked back into the room.
Lily was sitting with Nia.
She looked up when she saw me.
I smiled.
Not because I was okay.
Because she needed me to be.
Then I stepped away.
I called the number I hadn’t dialed in years.
My father’s old assistant answered.
“Mr. Carter’s office.””
“This is Darius.””
A pause.
“Darius?””
“I need to know something.””
The assistant hesitated.
“What?””
“Did my father leave any documents about my wedding?””
The silence was immediate.
Too immediate.
“You know about those?””
My stomach tightened.
“Documents?””
Another pause.
Then:
“There was a folder.””
“What folder?””
“I thought Simone already gave it to you.””
My hands went cold.
“Gave me what?””
The assistant lowered his voice.
“Your father’s family plan.””
Family plan.
That phrase again.
Like my family was a company.
Like people were pieces on a board.
“Where is it?””
“I don’t know.””
“Who has it?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Your mother.””
I ended the call.
Slowly.
The room felt unreal.
Simone watched me.
“You didn’t know.””
It wasn’t a question.
“No.””
She closed her eyes.
“I thought you did.””
“You thought I knew?””
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So everyone knew except me.””
Nobody spoke.
Not Simone.
Not Nia.
Not Marcus.
Not even Lily.
That was the worst part.
My daughter had learned silence because the adults around her were hiding things.
I walked over to the table.
The wedding program sat there.
My name next to Simone’s.
A future printed on paper.
A future that had been planned without asking the one person who actually had to live it.
“Why?”” I asked.
Simone looked at me.
“What?””
“Why did you all think this was okay?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because we thought you were too emotional.””
That answer shocked me.
“Too emotional?””
“Yes.””
“For loving my daughter?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“For letting her control everything.””
I stared at her.
Then I understood.
This was never about hair.
It was never about a school.
It was never about routines.
They believed Lily had too much power because I loved her.
They saw a child being protected.
And called it weakness.
I walked toward Simone.
“Do you know what the worst part is?””
She looked at me.
“You could have told me you were struggling.””
Her eyes dropped.
“You could have said you needed help.””
“I know.””
“You could have asked me to make space for you.””
“I know.””
“But instead, you decided my daughter was the thing taking up space.””
She started crying.
“I never hated Lily.””
“I believe that.””
She looked surprised.
“But that doesn’t mean you didn’t hurt her.””
The room stayed quiet.
Then Lily stood.
Everyone turned.
She was holding her flower basket.
“Daddy?””
I immediately walked toward her.
“What’s wrong?””
She looked at Simone.
Then back at me.
“Are we still a family?””
My heart broke.
I knelt down.
“Yes.””
“Even if the wedding doesn’t happen?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Even if people are mad?””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
Then asked the question I would never forget.
“Do I still belong?””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Always.””
Behind me, someone started crying.
I didn’t know who.
I didn’t care.
Because at that moment, the only thing that mattered was my daughter believing she had a place in my life.
Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
He looked at me.
“It’s from your mother.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she say?””
He turned the phone around.
One sentence.
That was all.
*Darius, you need to know why your father approved the plan. It wasn’t because of Lily.*
I stared at the message.
May you like
Then another line appeared.
*It was because of something he discovered about Simone.*
