Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Wedding Smile
I didn’t answer the call.
Not because I wasn’t curious.
Because my daughter was still standing there.
And for the first time that morning, I understood something clearly.
There were questions I wanted answers to.
But there was one person who needed me more than answers.
Lily.
I picked her up carefully.
She was getting too big to carry now.
I knew that.
She knew that.
But she still wrapped her arms around my neck like she was five years old again.
“Daddy,” she whispered.
“I’m here.””
“Are you mad at me?””
The question broke me.
I stepped back.
“Why would I be mad at you?””
“Because the wedding is messed up.””
I looked at her face.
Her beautiful face.
The face of a child who thought someone else’s choices were her responsibility.
“No, baby.””
I touched her cheek.
“You didn’t ruin anything.””
Behind me, Simone stood completely silent.
For once, she had nothing to say.
Nia grabbed Lily’s flower basket from the table.
“I’ll get her things.””
I nodded.
Marcus stepped into the hallway.
“Darius, are you sure?””
I looked at him.
“I’m sure about one thing.””
“What?””
“My daughter should never have to earn kindness.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
Then he looked back inside the room.
“Man…”
He didn’t finish.
He didn’t need to.
The scene explained itself.
A bride in a perfect white gown.
A little girl missing pieces of her hair.
And a father realizing he had ignored signs because he wanted the future he imagined to be real.
Simone finally spoke.
“Darius.””
I turned.
Her eyes were different now.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“Can we talk alone?””
“No.””
Her face tightened.
“Why?””
“Because this involves Lily.””
“She’s seven.””
“Yes.””
“And she doesn’t understand adult situations.””
I stared at her.
“She understands being hurt.””
That silenced her.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Simone whispered:
“I made a mistake.””
The words surprised me.
Not because I believed them.
Because they were the first honest words she had said all morning.
I waited.
She continued.
“I thought I was helping.””
“How?””
She looked down.
“I thought people would judge.””
“People?””
“The guests. My family. Everyone.””
I shook my head.
“So you decided my daughter needed to change?””
“I didn’t mean to cut that much.””
That sentence made my stomach turn.
Not “I shouldn’t have done it.””
Not “I hurt her.””
Just:
I didn’t mean to cut that much.
Lily heard it.
And her little hand tightened around mine.
Simone noticed.
Her face fell.
“Lily…”
My daughter looked away.
That hurt Simone more than my anger.
Because Lily had always loved her.
Then Nia returned with Lily’s small bag.
“Ready.””
I nodded.
As we started walking out, Simone called my name.
“Darius.””
I stopped.
Slowly.
She looked at me.
“I love you.””
The words hung there.
Once, they would have made me stop.
Once, they would have made me fight for us.
But love without safety wasn’t enough.
Love without respect wasn’t enough.
“I wanted to believe that,” I said.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then my phone rang again.
The same number.
This time, Simone looked terrified before I even checked the screen.
I noticed.
And that bothered me.
Because she recognized it.
I pulled the phone out.
A name appeared.
*Andre.*
I had never met anyone named Andre connected to my life.
I looked at Simone.
“How do you know who this is?””
She didn’t answer.
That was when I knew.
There was something else.
Something she had been hiding.
The ringing continued.
Everyone waited.
Lily.
Nia.
Marcus.
Even Simone.
Finally, I answered.
“Hello?””
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then a man’s voice came through.
“Darius?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“I think you need to know what Simone was planning before you walked down that aisle.””
I looked at Simone.
Her face had gone completely white.
May you like
And then the man said something that changed everything.
“Because she wasn’t just trying to change your daughter’s hair.””
