Chapter 5: The Wedding Guest Who Knew Too Much

The woman standing outside the bridal room looked familiar.

Not because I had met her.

Because I had seen her before.

In pictures.

At Simone’s family gatherings.

At dinners.

Always standing slightly behind Simone.

Always smiling.

Her name was Renee.

Simone’s older sister.

And the look on her face told me she had heard enough.

“Renee,” Simone said.

Her voice was sharp.

A warning.

But Renee didn’t look at her.

She looked at me.

“I think you deserve to know everything.””

Simone stepped into the hallway.

“No.””

Renee’s expression hardened.

“After what happened in there?””

“Don’t.””

“Someone needs to.””

I looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily tugged my jacket.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

Her face was tired.

She had cried so much that her eyes looked heavy.

I made a decision.

Whatever this was, Lily didn’t need to stand in the middle of it.

“Nia, can you take Lily to the waiting area?””

Nia nodded.

“I’ve got her.””

Lily looked nervous.

“Are you coming?””

I knelt down.

“Yes.””

“Promise?””

I held up my hand.

“Promise.””

She nodded.

Only after she walked away did I turn back.

“Talk.””

Renee swallowed.

“She was never planning for Lily to be part of the wedding.””

I felt anger rise again.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Simone had been talking about changing the family dynamic before today.””

Simone crossed her arms.

“Renee, stop.””

“No.””

For once, someone ignored Simone.

“She told me she wanted a fresh start.””

I looked at Simone.

“A fresh start without my daughter?””

“That’s not what I meant.””

Renee shook her head.

“You said Lily was too attached to him.””

My face went cold.

Simone looked away.

“She was adjusting.””

“She’s seven.””

“I know how old she is.””

“Then act like it.””

The hallway went silent.

I had never seen Simone look so small.

But I couldn’t feel sympathy.

Not yet.

Not while my daughter was somewhere nearby wondering if she was the reason her father’s wedding was falling apart.

“What else?”” I asked.

Renee hesitated.

Then reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is that?””

“A letter.””

“From who?””

She looked at Simone.

“From the person who was supposed to give it to you after the ceremony.””

Simone moved quickly.

“Renee, don’t.””

I stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

Renee handed it over.

The envelope was sealed.

My name was written on the front.

Darius.

My fingers tightened around it.

“Did you read it?””

Renee nodded.

“Once.””

“And?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

I stared at her.

“Then what was it?””

She lowered her voice.

“It was Simone explaining why she thought your life needed to change.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

I read the first line.

And immediately felt sick.

I know this will be difficult for Darius at first, but eventually he’ll understand what is best for our family.

Our family.

Not my family.

Our family.

I kept reading.

The letter wasn’t a love letter.

It was a plan.

A carefully written explanation of how things would become easier after marriage.

How routines would change.

How Lily would become “more independent.””

How I would have more time to focus on my marriage.

I looked up.

“More time?””

Simone looked away.

“Darius…”

“She’s a child.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

The hallway felt silent.

Then Renee said something I didn’t expect.

“She didn’t just write that letter.””

I looked at her.

“What else?””

“She had already picked a new school.””

My heart stopped.

“For Lily?””

Renee nodded.

“She said the school was better.””

“Did Lily know?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Because Renee knew.

Simone knew.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

I folded the letter.

Slowly.

“You were planning my daughter’s life without me.””

Simone started crying.

“I was trying to help.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You were trying to replace my choices with yours.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I almost whispered the word.

“My daughter’s hair is on the floor because you wanted her to look different.””

I looked toward the bridal room.

“You picked a school for her without asking me.””

Then back at Simone.

“What else did you decide?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than anything.

Then Nia appeared at the end of the hallway.

Her face was tense.

“Darius.””

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

She looked behind her.

“At the waiting area…”

She paused.

“Lily found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Nia swallowed.

“A picture.””

“What picture?””

She looked at Simone.

Then at me.

“A picture of Simone’s wedding plan.””

I frowned.

“Wedding plan?””

May you like

Nia nodded.

“And Lily was written on it.””
