Chapter 10: The Father Who Wasn’t Supposed to Exist
Nobody moved.
Two men.
One name.
One impossible truth standing in front of me.
The stranger held the security badge between his fingers.
*Daniel Carter.*
My father’s name.
The man who raised me stared at him like he was looking at a ghost.
“That’s not possible.””
The stranger looked at him.
“I know.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“No. You don’t understand.””
The stranger slowly stepped farther into the auditorium.
“I understand more than anyone here.””
My hands went cold.
I looked between them.
The resemblance wasn’t obvious at first.
Different ages.
Different lives.
But now that I knew what I was seeing, I couldn’t unsee it.
The same eyes.
The same jawline.
The same small scar near the eyebrow.
My father noticed me looking.
“Maya…”
I shook my head.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
Because he knew.
I had spent my whole life believing I knew exactly who he was.
Now every answer had become another question.
The stranger looked at me.
“My name is Daniel Carter.””
My father laughed once.
A painful sound.
“That’s my name.””
The stranger nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Because Angela knew this day would come.””
Everyone turned.
My father looked at him.
“You knew?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“I knew there was another person involved.””
“Another person?””
Marcus nodded.
“But Angela never told me his location.””
The stranger looked down.
“She was protecting me.””
My father’s voice became quiet.
“Why?””
The stranger looked at him.
“Because Vanessa wanted me gone.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That is a lie.””
The stranger looked at her.
“You told me Daniel would never believe me.””
Her face changed.
“You threatened me.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“You threatened yourself.””
The auditorium fell silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who is he?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
And for the first time, she looked small.
“He was the man who helped Angela after she found out the truth.””
“What truth?””
The stranger answered.
“The truth about the accident.””
My heart stopped.
Accident.
Everyone had always told me my mother died in a tragic accident.
A simple explanation.
A painful explanation.
But never a complete one.
“What accident?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No more protecting me.””
The stranger nodded.
“Your mother’s car didn’t fail.””
The room went quiet.
“What?””
“She was followed.””
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
My father grabbed the edge of a chair.
“Who followed her?””
The stranger looked directly at Vanessa.
Nobody breathed.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You don’t have proof.””
The stranger reached into his jacket.
“I do.””
He pulled out a small flash drive.
A tiny piece of plastic.
But everyone looked at it like it was a weapon.
“What is that?”” Daniel asked.
“Your wife’s backup.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Everything Angela collected.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“No.””
The stranger continued.
“She knew someone close to her was dangerous.””
I looked at the blue room.
The hidden photographs.
The letters.
The recordings.
My mother had spent years preparing for this.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”” I whispered.
The stranger’s expression softened.
“Because she loved you.””
That answer hurt.
Because I believed it.
He walked closer.
“She knew the truth could destroy your childhood.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And now?””
He looked away.
Because now it had destroyed everything anyway.
The stranger turned on the small flash drive recorder.
A video appeared on the auditorium screen.
My mother.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My breath caught.
“Hello, Maya.””
The room disappeared.
There was only her.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this, then Vanessa failed.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
My mother continued.
“I need you to understand something.””
She paused.
“I did not leave you.””
A tear slipped down my face.
The words I had waited years to hear.
“I fought to come back to you.””
My father closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“But someone made sure I couldn’t.””
The screen flickered.
Then my mother said the sentence that changed everything.
“The person who caused my disappearance was not Vanessa.””
Everyone froze.
My mother looked terrified.
“It was someone Vanessa was protecting.””
The video stopped.
No warning.
No explanation.
Just darkness.
And one final mystery.
Someone Vanessa was protecting.
Vanessa slowly looked at someone behind us.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not Marcus.
Someone else.
Someone in the audience.
She whispered:
“You weren’t supposed to be here.””
Everyone turned.
May you like
A man stood near the back exit.
And he smiled.
