Chapter 5: The Call From a Dead Woman

Nobody touched Vanessa’s phone.

It kept ringing.

The sound echoed through the auditorium.

A simple ringtone.

But it felt like an alarm.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Answer it.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.””

“Answer it.””

Her lips trembled.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

She stepped backward.

“No.””

I watched her carefully.

For years, Vanessa had controlled every room she entered.

She chose the conversations.

She chose what people knew.

She chose what people believed.

But now she was trapped.

By a phone call.

By a door.

By my mother’s secrets.

“Why is my wife calling you?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa said nothing.

The phone stopped.

Everyone exhaled.

Then it rang again.

Same name.

Angela.

My mother.

Evelyn walked closer.

“She’s not calling.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What do you mean?”” I asked.

Evelyn looked at the phone.

“She recorded something.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You don’t know that.””

“I helped her.””

The room went silent.

“You helped my mother?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your mother knew she was running out of time.””

My throat tightened.

“Running out of time because of what?””

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

“Because of her.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re still blaming me after all these years?””

Daniel looked shocked.

“All these years?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Too late.

I stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

She looked away.

Evelyn answered.

“It means Vanessa knew me before today.””

The pieces started connecting.

The secret room.

The warning.

The fear.

The phone.

The dress.

“You were both hiding something.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Maya, you have no idea what your mother was like.””

My anger rose.

“Don’t talk about her.””

“She wasn’t perfect.””

“Neither are you.””

Vanessa looked at me.

For a second, something almost human appeared on her face.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

“You think your mother was protecting you,” she said.

“But she was protecting herself.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.””

“No, Daniel.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You deserve to know.””

“Then tell me.””

She hesitated.

The entire room waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your wife knew about the money.””

Daniel frowned.

“What money?””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“She’s trying to change the story.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“The accounts. The investments. The property.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

I looked between them.

“What money?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You really don’t know.””

That hurt.

Because I realized there were parts of my own family I had never seen.

My father shook his head.

“Angela handled the finances.””

“Yes,” Vanessa said.

“And she trusted me.””

Evelyn interrupted.

“She trusted you because she thought you were her friend.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I was.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice was cold.

“You were waiting.””

The second recording started playing.

The phone screen lit up.

A voice filled the auditorium.

My mother’s voice.

Everyone froze.

“Maya…”

I covered my mouth.

It was her.

Older than the recordings I remembered.

But unmistakably her.

“If you are hearing this, then the blue room has been opened.””

My father grabbed the edge of a chair.

Angela continued.

“Daniel, I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you sooner.””

A pause.

A shaky breath.

“Vanessa knows the truth about what happened the night I disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

Disappeared.

Not died.

Disappeared.

Daniel whispered:

“What?””

The recording continued.

“She told everyone I was gone.””

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the phone.

“Turn it off.””

Evelyn blocked her.

“No.””

My mother’s voice continued.

“But she didn’t know someone else was watching.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Someone else.

My mother took another breath.

“Maya, if you are listening…”

The recording crackled.

Then:

“Your father needs to know that Vanessa was not my replacement.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“She was my enemy.””

A wave of whispers exploded through the audience.

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

“No…”

Vanessa shook her head.

“She’s lying.””

But nobody believed her anymore.

My mother’s final words from the recording came softly.

“The person who can prove everything is standing in this room.””

The recording stopped.

Everyone looked around.

Confused.

Searching.

Until Evelyn slowly turned toward the audience.

Her eyes landed on one person.

A man sitting alone in the back row.

A man I had never noticed before.

Evelyn whispered:

“He was there the night your mother vanished.””

The man stood.

And my father recognized him.

“Marcus?””

The stranger looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

May you like

And said:

“I should have told you the truth fourteen years ago.””
