Chapter 9: The Letter My Mother Never Wanted Read

The envelope felt heavier than paper.

I stared at my mother’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had guided me here.

The same handwriting that had uncovered secrets.

Now it held a secret about itself.

“Maya,” Isaiah said softly.

I looked at him.

“Did you know about this?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“No.””

My chest tightened.

My biological father.

The man my mother supposedly loved first.

Didn’t know.

My father Daniel.

The man who raised me.

Didn’t know.

And Vanessa.

The woman I had spent fourteen years living with.

Did.

I looked at her.

“You kept this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked exhausted.

“Because I knew the truth would destroy everyone.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You mean it would destroy you.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Do not open that letter.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa wants you angry.””

“She already succeeded.””

The room went quiet.

I turned the envelope over.

My fingers shook as I opened it.

Inside was one page.

My mother’s handwriting.

*Maya,*

*If you are reading this, then the people around you have finally stopped protecting their own stories.*

I swallowed.

That sounded like her.

Strong.

Direct.

*You deserve the truth, even if it hurts.*

I continued reading.

*Isaiah was your biological father. Daniel was the man who became your father. Both truths can exist.*

I looked at Daniel.

His eyes were wet.

*When I found out I was pregnant, Isaiah and I were young. We loved each other, but we were not ready.*

Isaiah closed his eyes.

*Daniel came into our lives later. He gave us stability. He gave Maya a home.*

My breathing slowed.

This wasn’t the betrayal I expected.

It was something more complicated.

Something more human.

Then I reached the next paragraph.

And everything changed.

*But Vanessa discovered something neither of them knew.*

I looked up.

Vanessa went still.

*She found proof that Isaiah’s family had been hiding something dangerous.*

The room changed.

Isaiah looked confused.

“What?””

I kept reading.

*I learned Isaiah did not leave because he wanted to. He left because someone threatened him.*

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

But my mother’s letter continued.

*The person who threatened him was not Vanessa alone.*

My stomach dropped.

Not Vanessa alone.

Daniel whispered:

“What does that mean?””

I kept reading.

*Vanessa was working with someone else. Someone close to us.*

A sound escaped from the crowd.

A gasp.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked concerned.

Isaiah looked terrified.

The letter continued.

*Maya, if you discover this truth, do not immediately trust the person who claims they are helping you.*

I stopped.

The room went silent.

Because that sentence felt different.

Like my mother was warning me about someone standing beside me.

Not someone attacking me.

Someone helping.

My eyes moved slowly around the room.

Evelyn.

Marcus.

Isaiah.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Everyone had a reason to lie.

Everyone had something to lose.

I looked back at the letter.

The final lines were written darker, as if my mother pressed harder against the paper.

*The person who knows the full truth is the person who was with me during my final hours.*

My heart stopped.

My mother’s final hours.

Someone was with her.

Someone alive.

Someone here.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Who was with Angela?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn slowly raised her hand.

Everyone turned.

“I was.””

My breath caught.

She looked at me.

“I was with your mother.””

Isaiah stepped back.

“No.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Angela made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“To protect Maya.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“From who?””

Evelyn looked toward the entrance of the auditorium.

The locked doors suddenly unlocked.

A man in a security uniform entered.

Everyone turned.

Evelyn’s face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

She whispered:

“No…”

Marcus looked shocked.

“Impossible.””

I stared at the man.

Because he was looking directly at me.

And he said:

“Maya, your mother wanted me to find you before Vanessa did.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

Because she knew him.

Daniel whispered:

“Who is that?””

The man removed his security badge.

And the name on it made my blood run cold.

*Daniel Carter.*

My father’s name.

The same name.

The same face.

May you like

Two Daniels.

Standing in the same room.
