Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in My Father’s Name

The auditorium doors remained locked.

No one spoke.

The recording had stopped, but the final words stayed in the air like smoke.

*The second survivor is Maya’s real father.*

I looked at Daniel.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who stayed up all night when I had a fever.

The man who cried harder than I did when I received my college acceptance letter.

My father.

Or maybe not.

My fingers tightened around my mother’s letter.

“Maya,” Daniel said.

But his voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Say something.””

I couldn’t.

Because suddenly every memory I had was being rearranged.

Every story.

Every photograph.

Every family dinner.

Every moment I thought I understood.

Vanessa stepped away from Daniel.

Almost like she was afraid to stand beside him.

Marcus looked at him carefully.

“Daniel.””

My father turned.

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Is there something you need to tell Maya?””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the floor.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I felt something break inside me.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I need the truth.””

“Maya, I am your father.””

“But you don’t sound sure.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed them answered.

A crowd of strangers watched us.

The same people who came to celebrate my graduation were now watching my family fall apart.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Angela knew this day would come.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I knew she had doubts.””

“Doubts about me?””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Doubts about the lies surrounding her.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

“You’re all acting like Angela was some perfect victim.””

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“Be careful.””

“No,” Vanessa said.

Her voice grew stronger.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

She looked at Daniel.

“You weren’t the only person your wife was hiding things from.””

My father’s face hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Angela had secrets too.””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t use my mother to save yourself.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You think I’m the villain because that’s what she wanted.””

Evelyn’s expression turned cold.

“She never wanted that.””

“Really?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Then why did she leave all these messages after she disappeared?””

My stomach dropped.

“After she disappeared?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa froze.

She realized her mistake.

Marcus moved quickly.

“Enough.””

He looked at Daniel.

“You need to hear this from someone who was there.””

Daniel stared.

“Where was she?””

Marcus took a slow breath.

“The night Angela vanished…”

The auditorium lights flickered again.

Everyone looked upward.

The speakers crackled.

Another recording started.

This time, it was my mother.

“Maya, if you found this part, it means the first truth was not enough.””

My chest tightened.

Her voice.

Again.

Like she was standing beside me.

“Your father has always loved you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

A tear slipped down his face.

“But love does not erase secrets.””

Everyone became silent.

Angela continued.

“Daniel, I wanted to tell you the truth. I wanted to believe you would understand.””

The recording paused.

Then:

“But I was afraid because of what happened before Maya was born.””

My heart stopped.

Before I was born.

Daniel looked shocked.

“Maya…”

The recording continued.

“Before I married Daniel, there was someone else.””

The room went still.

Someone else.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

My father whispered:

“No.””

Angela continued.

“I never told Daniel because I thought the past was buried.””

A crackling sound.

Then:

“But Vanessa found out.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“She’s lying.””

Nobody responded.

The recording continued.

“And when Vanessa discovered the truth, she used it against me.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“She knew.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Knew what?””

Marcus looked at me.

“That Maya’s birth records were changed.””

My legs felt weak.

The entire world became quiet.

My birth records.

Changed.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Maya…”

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I stepped back.

The person I trusted most couldn’t even deny it.

Vanessa whispered:

“Now you understand.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

Her honesty was worse than a lie.

“How long?””

“Since before I married your father.””

My voice cracked.

“Then why did you stay?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Because I knew something about your family that nobody else did.””

“What?””

She looked toward the blue room.

“The person who changed your records is still alive.””

A cold silence filled the auditorium.

Marcus immediately turned.

“Vanessa.””

“What?””

His face changed.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“Yes, I do.””

She smiled sadly.

“For fourteen years, everyone thought Angela was trying to hide the truth.””

She looked at me.

“But she was trying to protect Maya from the person who created it.””

The blue room door moved.

Slowly.

Someone inside pushed it open.

Everyone turned.

And a voice came from the darkness.

“Maya.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from recordings.

Not from memories.

From somewhere deeper.

Somewhere I had forgotten.

“Come here.””

May you like

The voice whispered.

“I’ve been waiting for my daughter.””
