Chapter 13: The Truth Inside the Pendant
Richard stood at the entrance of the auditorium like he owned the room.
Like he had always owned the room.
The missing piece of my mother’s note was held between his fingers.
Everyone stared at him.
Nobody moved.
Because after everything we had discovered, the most terrifying possibility remained:
Maybe he still had one more secret.
“You’re lying,” Daniel said.
Richard smiled.
“That’s what everyone says when they hear something they don’t want to believe.””
I held the broken pendant in my hand.
The tiny piece of paper inside it felt heavier than anything I had ever carried.
“The real enemy is…”
My mother’s words.
Cut off.
Waiting.
Richard slowly walked closer.
“I spent fourteen years making sure that sentence was never finished.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You said you destroyed it.””
Richard glanced at her.
“I said a lot of things.””
Her face changed.
“You used me.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“No, Vanessa. You used yourself.””
The words hurt her.
I saw it.
The realization.
The moment she finally understood she was never his partner.
Only his tool.
“You promised me everything would disappear,” she whispered.
Richard shrugged.
“And it almost did.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Why come here now?””
Richard looked around the auditorium.
“Because Angela planned for everything.””
His eyes moved toward me.
“Except for one thing.””
“What?””
He smiled.
“You.””
The room went silent.
I hated how calmly he said it.
Like I wasn’t a person.
Like I was a final move in a game.
“What does that mean?””
Richard stopped a few feet away.
“Your mother believed she could hide the truth inside you.””
I frowned.
“Inside me?””
He pointed at the pendant.
“She knew everyone would search her house. Her files. Her bank accounts.””
He looked at the blue room.
“She knew they would search everywhere except the one place she trusted.””
I looked at the necklace.
“Me.””
Richard nodded.
“Exactly.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
Richard looked at him.
“Your daughter?””
A bitter smile appeared.
“That’s still the question, isn’t it?””
Daniel flinched.
I felt anger rise.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at me.
I stepped forward.
“I am not a question.””
Richard’s smile faded slightly.
“I like that.””
“I don’t care what you like.””
My voice shook.
“But I want the truth.””
For the first time, nobody interrupted.
No one tried to protect me.
No one tried to soften it.
I wanted everything.
Richard looked at the torn note.
“Your mother discovered something about your birth.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You know part of it.””
The auditorium became silent.
Richard continued.
“Angela found out that your biological father’s family had been hiding a legal battle over an inheritance.””
Isaiah looked confused.
“My family?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at him.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“That’s why Angela kept investigating.””
I looked at Isaiah.
“What inheritance?””
He looked shaken.
“I don’t know.””
Richard looked satisfied.
“Exactly.””
He turned back to me.
“Your mother discovered that someone had forged documents before you were born.””
My heart raced.
“The birth records.””
Richard nodded.
“Someone changed them.””
Everyone looked at Daniel.
But Richard shook his head.
“Not him.””
The room froze.
Daniel looked up.
“Then who?””
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“Tell them.””
She didn’t speak.
“Tell Maya what you found.””
Vanessa looked at me.
Her expression was broken.
“I found the records.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Before I married your father.””
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because Richard asked me to.””
Everyone reacted.
Daniel looked betrayed.
“You knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I knew Maya wasn’t Daniel’s biological child.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Isaiah.
Then back at Vanessa.
“And you stayed?””
“I thought I was helping.””
“You thought helping meant lying to a child for fourteen years?””
Her eyes filled.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone always said that.
Protecting me.
Protecting me.
But nobody ever asked what I wanted.
Richard interrupted.
“And that is where Angela was wrong.””
I turned.
“What?””
“She thought Vanessa was the enemy.””
He smiled.
“But she wasn’t.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“You were.””
My father froze.
“No.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Daniel, you don’t remember everything from that night.””
My father’s face changed.
A flash of fear.
A memory.
Something buried.
“What did you do?”” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
Richard smiled.
“That’s the truth.””
The lights flickered.
Then the auditorium speakers turned on.
A final recording.
My mother’s voice.
“Maya.””
Everyone stopped.
“Before you believe Richard, remember this…”
The recording crackled.
“Richard always tells the truth in pieces.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
My mother continued.
“He gives you enough truth to make the lie believable.””
Everyone looked at Richard.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
The recording continued.
“The person who changed Maya’s records…”
A pause.
“The person who destroyed my life…”
Another pause.
“Is the same person who will try to convince Maya that he is saving her.””
The recording ended.
Slowly.
Everyone looked at Richard.
And Richard looked at me.
Not angry.
Afraid.
May you like
Because my mother had left one final trap.
A trap he didn’t know about.
