Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew My Childhood
Nobody moved.
The figure remained hidden inside the blue room.
Only his voice filled the auditorium.
“My daughter.””
Those two words changed everything.
Daniel looked like he had been hit.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus closed his eyes.
And I stood frozen.
Because some impossible part of me recognized him.
Not his face.
Not his name.
His voice.
A voice from old memories.
A voice from dreams.
A voice I thought belonged only to childhood imagination.
“Maya,” Daniel whispered.
I looked at him.
“Who is that?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped toward the door.
Marcus grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
I pulled away.
“No more waiting.””
The words came out stronger than I expected.
“No more secrets.””
I walked into the blue room.
The crowd behind me disappeared.
The noise disappeared.
All I saw was the man standing near the back wall.
He was older.
Much older.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of pain.
But his eyes…
His eyes were familiar.
“Maya.””
He said my name like he had said it thousands of times.
I stopped.
“Who are you?””
The man swallowed.
“My name is Isaiah.””
I waited.
Nothing.
The name meant nothing.
Then he said:
“I’m your biological father.””
My knees almost gave out.
Behind me, I heard Daniel breathe sharply.
“No.””
Isaiah looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel stepped into the room.
“You don’t get to walk in here after fourteen years and say that.””
Isaiah nodded.
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Isaiah looked at me.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Every year.””
My heart raced.
“What do you mean?””
He looked toward the wall.
There were more photographs.
My mother.
Isaiah.
A young version of me.
Pictures I had never seen.
My entire life existed in this room.
Hidden.
Waiting.
“Your mother wanted to tell you.””
Daniel looked angry.
“She chose me.””
Isaiah nodded.
“Yes.””
That answer surprised everyone.
“She chose you because you loved Maya.””
Daniel’s anger faded slightly.
Isaiah continued.
“But she also knew the truth mattered.””
I looked at the photographs.
“Why did you leave?””
His eyes filled.
“I didn’t.””
The room went quiet.
“I was taken away from you.””
My stomach twisted.
“By who?””
Isaiah looked toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
I felt the answer before he spoke.
“Vanessa.””
Daniel turned.
“No.””
Isaiah nodded.
“She threatened me.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“That’s a lie.””
“You told me if I came near Maya, you would destroy Daniel.””
“I never said that.””
“You said you would show him documents that proved Angela cheated.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What documents?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Isaiah continued.
“You made Daniel believe I abandoned Angela.””
My father looked broken.
“I thought…”
“I know what you thought.””
Isaiah’s voice softened.
“And Angela let you believe it because she was trying to protect you.””
I looked at my father.
“She knew?””
Isaiah nodded.
“She knew everything.””
The room felt smaller.
“My mother knew you were alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Isaiah looked down.
“Because she was afraid Vanessa would hurt you.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
“You’re all forgetting one thing.””
She stepped forward.
“Angela was not innocent.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Vanessa’s eyes locked onto mine.
“She lied to you too.””
My heart sank.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Everyone stared.
“I kept this because I knew one day this would happen.””
Daniel whispered:
“What is that?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your mother’s final letter.””
I froze.
“What?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Is it?””
She held the envelope up.
“My question is…”
She looked at Isaiah.
“Did you ever tell Maya why Angela chose Daniel instead of you?””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa slowly turned the envelope around.
On the back was my mother’s handwriting.
May you like
One sentence.
*Maya must never know why I left Isaiah.*
