Chapter 12: The Last Secret Angela Left Behind

My father stared at the envelope.

Nobody touched it.

Not even him.

The entire auditorium seemed afraid of that small piece of paper.

Like it contained something too powerful to open.

“It’s for you,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“I know.””

“Then open it.””

His face tightened.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I swallowed.

“I spent my whole life hearing everyone else’s version of the truth.””

I looked around.

“I’m done.””

The words hurt him.

But he nodded.

Slowly.

Daniel picked up the envelope.

His hands were shaking.

He opened it.

Inside was one page.

Only one.

He read silently.

And the color disappeared from his face.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

Then handed me the letter.

I read the first line.

*Daniel, if Maya is reading this, then you finally admitted what happened.*

My breathing stopped.

The next words were for him.

*You did not kill me. But you helped create the lie.*

Daniel looked away.

I continued.

*The night I disappeared, you found out about Isaiah. You found out about Maya’s birth records. You were hurt, confused, and angry.*

My father closed his eyes.

*But you were never my enemy.*

I looked at him.

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because my father was guilty.

But not of what I thought.

My mother continued.

*You trusted the wrong person.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked down.

*Vanessa convinced you that protecting Maya meant hiding the truth.*

A tear rolled down Daniel’s face.

*You believed her because you loved Maya.*

I stopped reading.

Because I understood something.

Fear had been controlling everyone.

Not just anger.

Not just greed.

Fear.

I kept reading.

*But Vanessa was not the person controlling everything.*

My heart tightened.

Again.

Always someone else.

*The person behind Vanessa was Richard.*

Marcus nodded.

“She knew.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus continued.

“Angela discovered Richard was using Vanessa to access family accounts.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“She was stealing?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“I never wanted it to go that far.””

Everyone turned.

She looked exhausted.

“I thought I could fix it.””

My anger returned.

“You lied for fourteen years.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“You let me believe my mother abandoned me.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

For once, she didn’t defend herself.

And somehow that made it worse.

The letter continued.

*Maya, there is one final thing you need to know.*

I held my breath.

*The reason Richard wanted you hidden was not because of money.*

A cold feeling moved through me.

*It was because of who you are.*

I frowned.

Who I am?

The next line made my hands shake.

*You were the only person who inherited evidence from both sides of the family.*

I looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Isaiah stepped closer.

“My family had records.””

Marcus nodded.

“Angela combined them.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“She knew?””

“Yes,” Marcus said.

“She knew Maya would be the only person impossible to erase.””

I stared at the paper.

My entire life.

My identity.

My birth.

My family.

Everything had been connected to one hidden truth.

Then the letter ended.

*Maya, the final piece is not in the blue room.*

I looked toward the door.

*It has been with you the entire time.*

I froze.

“What?””

Evelyn suddenly covered her mouth.

“No…”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Maya…”

Her voice shook.

“The necklace.””

I touched the necklace around my neck.

The one my mother gave me when I was little.

The one I never removed.

“What about it?””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Your mother told me she hid something inside it.””

My fingers went still.

“Inside?””

She nodded.

“She said it was the one thing Richard would never think to search.””

The auditorium became silent.

I removed the necklace.

For the first time in fourteen years.

The small silver pendant rested in my palm.

Marcus leaned closer.

“There’s something inside.””

I looked at the pendant.

A tiny seam.

A hidden opening.

My heart raced.

I pressed it.

The pendant clicked open.

Inside was a small piece of folded paper.

Everyone leaned closer.

I unfolded it.

Four words.

Four words written by my mother.

*THE REAL ENEMY IS…*

The paper ended there.

Torn.

Incomplete.

I looked up.

“Where is the rest?””

Nobody answered.

Then Isaiah pointed toward the entrance.

A figure stood there.

Holding the missing half of the paper.

Richard.

He smiled.

“You finally found it.””

The doors locked again.

Richard lifted the torn note.

“And now you’re finally ready to hear the truth.””

He looked at Daniel.

“About who your daughter really is.””

Then he looked at me.

“Because Angela wasn’t protecting you from me.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was protecting me from you.””
