Chapter 11: The Man Behind Vanessa’s Fear

The man standing near the exit didn’t look surprised.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Everyone else looked confused.

Terrified.

Lost.

But him?

He looked prepared.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You.””

The man smiled slightly.

“Yes.””

My father stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored him.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You lasted longer than I expected.””

Her face twisted with anger.

“You ruined everything.””

A chill moved through me.

Because Vanessa wasn’t talking to him like an enemy.

She was talking to someone she knew.

Someone she feared.

The stranger named Daniel Carter moved closer to me.

“Stay behind me.””

The words were familiar.

The feeling wasn’t.

I had spent my whole life hearing my father say things like that.

Now two men were saying them.

Two men claiming pieces of my history.

The man near the exit walked forward.

Slowly.

“My name is Richard.””

Nobody reacted.

The name meant nothing.

Until Marcus spoke.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“Still alive, Marcus?””

Marcus went pale.

“You were supposed to be gone.””

Richard smiled.

“So was Angela.””

The room went silent.

My stomach turned.

Angela.

My mother.

Richard looked around the auditorium.

“All these years, and this is where everything comes out.””

He looked at me.

“Your graduation.””

His smile faded.

“Your mother would have loved the irony.””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Richard studied me.

“I knew your mother before any of these people did.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

A small smile appeared.

“You’re exactly like her.””

I hated that he said it.

Because it sounded like a compliment.

“You knew her.””

“Yes.””

“Did you hurt her?””

The room waited.

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than a yes.

“I did what I had to do.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at him.

“You were always the problem.””

My father frowned.

“Me?””

“You had something Angela never expected.””

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“Her trust.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard continued.

“Angela was smart. She knew Vanessa was manipulating her. She knew Marcus was helping her. She even knew Isaiah was being pushed away.””

He looked at me.

“But she never suspected you.””

My father looked confused.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Richard laughed softly.

“That’s the best part.””

I felt my heart race.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I don’t know him.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You don’t know a lot of things.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted:

“Stop!””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“Richard, you promised.””

Richard looked at her.

“And you failed.””

That sentence changed everything.

Vanessa wasn’t his partner anymore.

She was his victim.

“You used her,” I said.

Richard looked at me.

“Everyone uses everyone.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My mother didn’t.””

Richard’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, I saw anger.

Real anger.

“Your mother was the reason all of this happened.””

The auditorium went quiet.

“She refused to stay silent.””

He looked at the blue room.

“She thought hiding evidence would protect you.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What evidence?””

Richard looked amused.

“The evidence that proves Daniel was never the man he claimed to be.””

Everyone looked at my father.

Again.

Always my father.

The stranger.

The accusations.

The secrets.

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me.””

His eyes filled with pain.

“Maya…”

“Tell me.””

He looked down.

And that was when I knew.

There was something.

Something he had never told me.

Richard smiled.

“Ask him where he was the night Angela disappeared.””

The air left my lungs.

Daniel didn’t answer.

I whispered:

“Dad?””

He closed his eyes.

“I was there.””

The words broke the room.

My father was there.

The night my mother disappeared.

Daniel Carter.

The man who raised me.

The man who told me he lost her.

Was there.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

“Maya, listen—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew.””

“I didn’t hurt her.””

“But you lied.””

His face collapsed.

“Yes.””

One word.

One confession.

The kind that changes a person forever.

I looked at everyone around me.

Vanessa.

Richard.

Marcus.

Isaiah.

Evelyn.

Daniel.

All the people connected to my mother’s final days.

Everyone had lied.

Everyone had hidden something.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

The auditorium fell into darkness.

A scream came from the crowd.

When the emergency lights turned on seconds later…

Richard was gone.

And on the floor beside me was a new envelope.

My mother’s handwriting.

May you like

But this time, only three words were written on the front.

*For Daniel Carter.*
