Chapter 10: The Mother Who Never Left

Maya turned slowly.

Her hand tightened around Nia’s phone.

The voice behind her wasn’t familiar.

Not like her mother’s.

Not like her father’s.

Not like anyone she trusted.

The doorway remained open.

A figure stood in the hallway.

But the lights above flickered too quickly for Maya to see the face.

Marcus stepped in front of her.

“Who are you?””

The person didn’t answer.

Instead, the figure looked directly at Maya.

“You finally found the locker.””

Maya’s heart raced.

“How do you know about that?””

No response.

Daniel moved forward.

“Stay where you are.””

The figure laughed quietly.

“You still think you’re protecting people, Daniel?””

Daniel froze.

Maya noticed.

“You know them too.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Before anyone could speak, the hallway lights came back.

The figure was gone.

Again.

Only a small envelope remained on the floor.

Maya stared at it.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“Every time we get close, someone leaves something.””

Evelyn walked toward the envelope.

“Because they want us to follow.””

Maya looked at her.

“Then why are we doing it?””

Evelyn stopped.

Because she knew the answer.

They had no choice.

Maya picked up the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

But this time, it wasn’t of her father.

It wasn’t of Vanessa.

It was of Nia.

Standing in front of an old hospital archive building.

Holding the same locker key Marcus had.

On the back were four words.

*SHE LEFT IT FOR YOU.*

Maya stared.

“She knew.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“She knew this would happen.””

Maya looked at him.

“Dad.””

He looked away.

“What?””

“You keep saying things like you knew she was planning something.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Maya’s voice broke.

“How much did you know?””

A long silence.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Enough to know your mother was trying to protect you.””

“From who?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Nobody missed it.

Maya followed his eyes.

“Why are you looking at her?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because I was the reason your mother started digging.””

Maya stepped back.

“What?””

Vanessa sat down.

“I didn’t tell you everything.””

“That’s becoming a pattern.””

Vanessa accepted the anger.

“I used to work with Evelyn.””

Evelyn looked away.

“We were part of the same investigation.””

Marcus frowned.

“Investigation?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Before I met you, I was trying to uncover financial crimes connected to a powerful group.””

Maya looked at the documents.

“And my mom found out?””

“Yes.””

“Why did she care?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because the person behind it was connected to your birth.””

Maya felt dizzy.

“My birth?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your mother discovered someone had tried to erase part of your medical history.””

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because you weren’t supposed to know who saved you.””

Maya’s breath caught.

“Saved me?””

Nobody answered.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message.

From Nia.

Maya opened it.

*GO TO LOCKER 317. ALONE.*

She looked up.

“No.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“Absolutely not.””

Maya showed him the message.

Marcus’s expression changed.

“She wants you alone.””

“She wants me safe.””

“No,” Marcus said quietly.

“She wants you away from us.””

Maya looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Evelyn took the phone.

“She’s afraid one of us is the reason she disappeared.””

The words hurt.

Maya looked around.

Her father.

Her stepmother.

Evelyn.

Daniel.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had reasons to lie.

She took the key.

“I’m going.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

“Maya.””

“No.””

Her voice surprised everyone.

“I spent seventeen years believing my family would always tell me the truth.””

She looked at all of them.

“Tonight I learned everyone had a version of the truth.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“So now I need my own.””

Nobody stopped her.

The old archive building was dark and empty.

Locker 317 waited at the end of a narrow hallway.

Maya inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a small box.

Nothing else.

She opened it.

Inside were three things.

A hospital bracelet.

A handwritten letter.

And a small recording device.

The bracelet had her name.

*MAYA JOHNSON.*

But beneath it was another name.

A name scratched out.

Maya picked up the letter.

The handwriting was her mother’s.

She unfolded it.

The first line made her stop.

*My daughter, if you are reading this, I failed to keep you away from the truth.*

Maya’s hands shook.

She pressed play on the recorder.

Nia’s voice filled the room.

“Maya, I need you to know something.””

A pause.

“I lied to you.””

Maya closed her eyes.

The recording continued.

“I told you that your father and I chose your name because it was beautiful.””

Another pause.

“That wasn’t the real reason.””

Maya looked at the bracelet.

Then Nia said:

“Your name was chosen because it was the only clue we had.””

The recording stopped.

Maya stared.

A second later, another voice came from behind her.

A voice she recognized.

Her mother.

“Now you know why I disappeared.””

Maya turned.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

she saw Nia.
