Chapter 5: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Maya couldn’t move.

The photograph trembled between her fingers.

The image was clear.

Too clear.

Her father, Marcus Johnson, standing outside an unfamiliar building.

Next to a woman Maya didn’t recognize.

They weren’t smiling.

They weren’t posing.

They looked like people caught in the middle of a secret.

Marcus saw the picture.

His expression changed immediately.

“Maya…”

She looked at him.

“Who is she?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was worse than anything he could have said.

Maya stepped back.

“You know her.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“I haven’t seen her in years.””

Vanessa stood.

“You never told me about her.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You never told me who you really were.””

The two accusations collided.

Two secrets.

Two people who had spent years pretending they were honest.

Maya felt something break inside her.

Her family had always been the one thing she trusted.

Now every person around her had a hidden story.

“Who is she?”” Maya asked again.

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Her name is Evelyn.””

“Who is Evelyn?””

He hesitated.

“She worked with me.””

“At the company?””

Marcus nodded.

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“And this is connected to you?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa walked toward the photograph.

“Because Evelyn was the person who first found out about my past.””

Maya frowned.

“Everyone keeps saying ‘past.’ Nobody is telling me anything.””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“Because the truth is dangerous.””

Maya laughed quietly.

“My mother is missing, and you’re worried about danger?””

That sentence hit Vanessa.

She looked down.

“I deserve that.””

Marcus picked up the envelope.

“There’s nothing else?””

Maya shook her head.

“Only the picture.””

Marcus turned it over.

The back was empty.

Then Maya noticed something.

“Wait.””

She grabbed it.

There was a small mark in the corner.

A symbol.

A circle with three lines through it.

Vanessa immediately recognized it.

Her face changed.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa whispered:

“That symbol.””

“What about it?””

She stepped backward.

“I haven’t seen that in fifteen years.””

Maya looked between them.

“What is it?””

Neither answered.

Then the auditorium doors opened.

A man in a security uniform entered.

Everyone turned.

“Mr. Johnson?””

Marcus frowned.

“Yes?””

The man looked around.

“I need to speak with Maya.””

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

“Who are you?””

The man reached into his pocket.

Not for a weapon.

For an identification card.

“My name is Daniel Brooks. I’m with school security.””

Marcus relaxed slightly.

“Then why do you need my daughter?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Because someone left something in the security office.””

Maya’s heart jumped.

“From who?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your mother.””

Nobody spoke.

Maya walked forward.

“What did she leave?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“A message.””

“For me?””

He nodded.

Marcus followed.

“No. We all go.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then away.

Maya noticed.

“You know her?””

Daniel froze.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Another lie.

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“Everyone knows something except me.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

Minutes later, they entered the small security office near the auditorium.

On the desk was a sealed envelope.

Maya’s name was written across it.

Again.

Her mother’s handwriting.

She opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

*MAYA, IF YOU FIND THIS, IT MEANS I COULDN’T STOP THEM.*

Her breathing changed.

Marcus read over her shoulder.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then Maya saw the second line.

*THE PERSON WHO TOOK ME IS SOMEONE YOU HAVE KNOWN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE.*

The room went silent.

Marcus whispered:

“No…”

Maya stared at the words.

Someone she had known her entire life.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Then Daniel’s radio suddenly crackled.

A voice came through.

“Daniel, do you have the girl?””

Everyone froze.

Daniel slowly reached for the radio.

Maya looked at him.

“You told someone I was here?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The radio crackled again.

This time louder.

“Bring Maya to the back entrance.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who is that?””

Daniel looked terrified.

Then the voice said one final thing.

May you like

Something that made Vanessa collapse into the chair.

“Tell her the truth about what her mother discovered.””
