Chapter 4: The Name She Buried

The question stayed in the air like smoke.

“Your name isn’t Vanessa… is it?””

Maya didn’t raise her voice.

She didn’t need to.

The fear on Vanessa’s face answered before she could.

Marcus stared at his wife.

“Vanessa?””

The woman who had stood beside him for twelve years suddenly looked like a stranger.

Vanessa slowly lowered her eyes.

“Maya…”

“No.””

Maya stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””

Her fingers tightened around her mother’s phone.

“You knew my mom was in danger. You had her phone. You knew about the hallway. And now I find out you might not even be who you say you are?””

The auditorium felt colder.

Vanessa looked toward the empty stage.

The award trophy still sat under the spotlight where Maya had left it.

A symbol of a night that was supposed to be perfect.

A night that had turned into a nightmare.

Marcus’s voice was quiet.

“Tell me the truth.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“After twelve years?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

A security officer approached from the entrance.

“Mr. Johnson, should we call the police?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Before he could respond, Vanessa spoke.

“No police.””

Everyone turned.

Maya stared at her.

“No police?””

Vanessa realized too late what she had revealed.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Why would you care whether the police come?””

Vanessa looked trapped.

“I just know it will make things worse.””

“For who?”” Maya asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

And that was when Maya noticed something.

Her stepmother wasn’t afraid of being caught.

She was afraid of something else.

Someone else.

Maya walked toward her.

“Who are you running from?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I’m not.””

“Then prove it.””

“How?””

“Tell me your real name.””

Vanessa stayed silent.

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, she whispered:

“My name is Vanessa Cole.””

Marcus frowned.

“That’s your name.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Maya.

“That’s the name I started using after I left.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“Left where?””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“Before I met you… I was someone different.””

Maya crossed her arms.

“My mother found out.””

Vanessa looked at the phone.

“Yes.””

“What did she find?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“A connection.””

“To what?””

Vanessa looked toward the dark maintenance hallway.

“To the reason your mother disappeared.””

Marcus moved closer.

“Stop speaking in riddles.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Your mother discovered that my past wasn’t gone.””

The phone in Maya’s hand suddenly vibrated.

Everyone froze.

A new message.

From Nia.

Maya opened it.

One sentence.

*DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING VANESSA TELLS YOU.*

Maya looked up.

Vanessa saw the message.

Her expression collapsed.

“She sent that?””

Maya nodded.

Vanessa whispered:

“Then she knows.””

Marcus grabbed the phone.

“Knows what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Maya.

“Your mother wasn’t just investigating me.””

Maya waited.

“She was investigating your father.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stepped back.

“What?””

Maya looked at him.

Her father’s face had gone pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I wish it was.””

Marcus’s voice rose.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Years ago, before we met, there was a company account. Money disappeared. Someone took the blame. Someone disappeared.””

Maya stared.

“And my dad was involved?””

“No.””

Vanessa’s answer came too quickly.

Marcus noticed.

“Then why mention me?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because someone wanted Nia to think you were involved.””

Maya’s confusion deepened.

“So who did?””

Vanessa looked toward the back wall.

The same wall where the second phone had rung.

“I don’t know.””

A sound interrupted them.

A soft metallic click.

Everyone turned.

The maintenance door behind the auditorium slowly opened.

Nobody moved.

Marcus whispered:

“Nia?””

Maya took one step forward.

The darkness inside the hallway seemed to breathe.

Then something slid across the floor.

A small envelope.

Maya picked it up.

Her name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

By her mother.

She opened it with shaking hands.

Inside was one photograph.

Maya looked down.

Then her entire body went still.

Because the picture showed her father.

Standing beside someone Maya had never seen before.

May you like

And on the back of the photo were six words:

*THEY BOTH LIED ABOUT THAT NIGHT.*
