Chapter 8: The Secret in the Hospital Records

The person standing in the doorway did not move.

Neither did anyone else.

For one impossible second, Maya thought she was looking at a ghost.

Then the emergency lights flickered.

The figure disappeared.

The doorway was empty.

Marcus rushed forward.

“Where did they go?””

Daniel followed him into the hallway.

“Wait!””

Maya stayed frozen.

Her mother’s voice was still on the phone.

“Mom?””

No answer.

“MOM?””

Static.

Then the call ended.

Maya stared at the screen.

The call duration remained visible.

Three minutes.

Forty-seven seconds.

Proof that Nia was real.

Proof that this nightmare wasn’t something her mind created.

Marcus returned.

“Whoever it was is gone.””

Maya looked at him.

“Dad.””

He stopped.

“You knew about the hospital.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Maya’s eyes filled.

“You knew.””

He sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know the whole story.””

“But you knew something.””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“Yes.””

Vanessa sat beside him.

“I tried to tell you.””

Maya turned.

“You tried to tell him what?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“The truth about Evelyn.””

Evelyn tightened her grip on the folder.

“My truth is not the problem.””

“Then what is?”” Maya asked.

Nobody answered.

Maya walked toward the desk.

“Open the folder.””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Maya…”

“Open it.””

Her voice was stronger than before.

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

Then slowly opened the folder.

Inside were medical records.

Old photographs.

Documents from seventeen years ago.

Maya picked up the first page.

Her hands trembled.

*Maternity Ward Report.*

She looked at the date.

The day she was born.

“What am I looking at?””

Evelyn spoke quietly.

“The night you were born, someone accessed your mother’s hospital records.””

“Who?””

“We don’t know.””

Maya turned the page.

A name was written in the corner.

Her eyes widened.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It was familiar.

Very familiar.

She looked at Marcus.

“Why is your name here?””

Marcus looked away.

“I signed paperwork that night.””

“What paperwork?””

“Your emergency forms.””

Maya kept reading.

Then she saw another signature.

Her breathing stopped.

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was there.””

Maya looked up.

“What?””

“I was at the hospital.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I thought you said you met years later.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I lied.””

The words landed harder than a scream.

Maya stepped back.

“You were there the night I was born?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because I knew your mother before I knew your father.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“You never told me that.””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””

Maya held the records.

“What truth?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“The truth that your birth wasn’t supposed to happen.””

The room went silent.

Maya felt numb.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Maya, your mother discovered that the hospital records were altered.””

“Altered how?””

“Someone changed information about your birth.””

Maya looked at the papers.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel’s radio crackled.

A new voice came through.

“Security office. Respond.””

Daniel grabbed it.

“What happened?””

The voice replied:

“We found someone.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“The woman from the missing person report.””

Maya stopped breathing.

“My mom?””

The radio crackled.

“No.””

Everyone waited.

Then the voice said:

“The person who took her.””

Evelyn immediately grabbed the folder.

“We have to leave.””

Maya stepped back.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Maya.””

“No.””

She held the documents tighter.

“My entire life, everyone has made decisions for me.””

Her voice shook.

“But not anymore.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Pride and pain crossed his face.

Maya turned toward the door.

“Take me to them.””

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Maya…”

“What?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“If you see that person…”

She swallowed.

“You may finally understand why your mother disappeared.””

The lights suddenly shut off again.

A phone vibrated in the darkness.

Not Maya’s.

A new message appeared on Evelyn’s phone.

Everyone saw it.

One sentence.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE GIRL OUT OF THIS.*

Evelyn’s face went pale.

Because she recognized the sender.

May you like

And she whispered:

“They found us.””
