Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Door

The message stayed on Evelyn’s screen.

Nobody spoke.

The words were simple.

But they carried a threat everyone understood.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE GIRL OUT OF THIS.*

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“You know who sent that.””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Tell us.””

Evelyn locked the phone.

“I can’t.””

Maya shook her head.

“No more secrets.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You think knowing everything will make you safer.””

“It will make me ready.””

For a moment, Evelyn saw something in Maya that reminded her of Nia.

The same determination.

The same refusal to look away.

Evelyn sighed.

“The person who sent that message is someone who has been watching your family for years.””

“Who?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Then Maya.

“The person who changed your birth records.””

Maya felt cold.

“So they were there.””

“Yes.””

“At the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn opened her mouth.

A loud crash interrupted her.

Everyone jumped.

The sound came from the hallway.

Someone had knocked over a metal cart.

Daniel moved toward the door.

“Stay back.””

Marcus grabbed his arm.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I know how to handle this.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You’re not the only father in this room.””

Daniel paused.

Then nodded.

The two men moved together.

Maya stayed behind them.

But she watched everything.

The hallway outside was empty.

Too empty.

Daniel looked around.

“Nothing.””

Then Maya noticed something.

A shadow beneath the far door.

Someone was standing there.

She pointed.

“There.””

Marcus turned.

The door slammed shut.

They ran.

Daniel unlocked it.

Inside was a storage room.

Empty.

Except for one thing.

A folder sitting in the center of the floor.

Maya picked it up.

Her name was written on it.

Again.

Inside were photographs.

Not old ones.

Recent ones.

Maya at school.

Maya walking home.

Maya receiving awards.

Maya sitting alone in the library.

Her stomach turned.

Someone had been watching her.

For a long time.

Marcus took the photos.

His face filled with anger.

“Who did this?””

Vanessa looked at the final photo.

Then she dropped it.

Maya picked it up.

“What is it?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“It’s impossible.””

The picture showed Maya standing outside the auditorium earlier that evening.

Before the ceremony.

But in the background…

Someone was watching from the shadows.

Maya turned the picture over.

A date was written on the back.

Today.

Then another message.

*SHE WAS NEVER THE TARGET.*

Maya frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn slowly answered.

“It means whoever did this wasn’t watching you.””

“Then who?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“Your father.””

Marcus stepped back.

“What?””

Maya looked at him.

Again.

Another secret.

Another missing piece.

“Why would someone watch Dad?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa quietly said:

“Because Marcus knows where the original files are.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“What original files?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“The ones your wife found.””

Maya stared.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked destroyed.

“I don’t have them.””

Vanessa whispered:

“You did.””

Marcus’s face changed.

A memory.

A realization.

Then he reached into his jacket pocket.

Everyone watched.

He pulled out a small key.

Maya frowned.

“What is that?””

Marcus stared at it.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“It was in my car this morning.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“That’s not a key.””

She looked terrified.

“It’s a storage locker key.””

Daniel looked at the number engraved on it.

Then his expression changed.

“Locker 317.””

Maya looked at him.

“You know that number?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“It’s in the old hospital archive building.””

A silence fell.

Marcus looked at Maya.

“Your mother wanted me to find this.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at the key.

Then the photographs.

Then the phone.

“She wanted me to find it.””

The phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

Maya looked down.

Caller ID.

*NIA JOHNSON.*

This time, nobody moved except Maya.

She answered.

“Mom?””

A breath.

Then Nia spoke.

“Maya…”

“I’m here.””

“I know.””

Maya looked around.

“How?””

Silence.

Then Nia whispered:

“Because I’m standing right outside the room.””

Everyone turned.

The hallway behind them was empty.

Then the door slowly opened.

May you like

And a voice behind Maya said:

“She’s not the only one who’s been looking for you.””
