Chapter 12: The Man Who Guarded the Secret

Nobody moved.

Daniel stood beneath the weak emergency light.

The man who had helped them search.

The man who claimed to protect them.

The man who had watched everything unfold.

Maya felt sick.

“You.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I never wanted you involved.””

She laughed quietly.

“You followed me. You had my photos. You knew about the locker.””

Daniel looked away.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You were watching my daughter.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I was watching everyone.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You were the one who sent the messages.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The room exploded.

Marcus moved toward him.

But Nia stopped him.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

Nia’s voice was calm.

“Daniel isn’t the person who started this.””

Maya looked confused.

“Then why are we acting like he’s guilty?””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“Because I am guilty.””

Silence.

He reached into his jacket.

Everyone tensed.

But he pulled out a folder.

Old.

Worn.

Filled with documents.

“I helped cover it up.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

“The night Maya was born, I worked hospital security.””

Maya looked at the bracelet.

“You were there.””

Daniel nodded.

“I saw what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel looked at her.

“The person who changed your records wasn’t trying to erase you.””

Maya frowned.

“Then what?””

“They were trying to hide who your biological family was connected to.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“You already know.””

Maya looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A baby.

Two hospital bassinets.

Two bracelets.

One marked Maya.

The other marked another name.

Maya picked it up.

Her hands trembled.

The second bracelet belonged to:

*ALEXANDER CARTER.*

Maya looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn went pale.

“No.””

Maya whispered:

“Your last name.””

Evelyn couldn’t speak.

Daniel continued.

“The other child born that night was Evelyn’s son.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“You had a son?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then Nia said quietly:

“He disappeared.””

Maya stared.

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“And this is connected to me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya looked at the photograph.

“How?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because Alexander was the reason your records were changed.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“He was trying to protect her.””

Everyone looked at her.

Maya whispered:

“Protect me?””

Evelyn nodded.

“My son found out someone wanted to use your identity to cover what they did.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You know.””

Daniel looked away.

“I know who ordered it.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Who?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I spent seventeen years trying to forget that name.””

“Say it.””

Daniel looked at her.

Then quietly said:

“Richard Johnson.””

The room froze.

Marcus turned white.

Maya stared.

“Who is Richard Johnson?””

Nobody answered.

Because Marcus already knew.

He whispered:

“My father.””

Maya felt the world shift.

Her grandfather.

The man she remembered only through old photographs.

The man who had died years ago.

Daniel opened the folder.

“There’s more.””

He pulled out one final document.

A recent one.

Signed.

Maya looked at the date.

Three months ago.

Her grandfather had been dead for years.

But the signature was there.

Marcus whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Nia looked terrified.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Not impossible.””

Everyone looked at her.

Nia stared at the document.

“Because Richard Johnson wasn’t the person behind this.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Maya whispered:

“Then who was?””

Nia looked toward the door.

The same door where shadows had appeared all night.

Then she said:

“The person who inherited his secret.””

The lights flickered.

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

This time, the caller ID appeared on Maya’s screen.

A name.

May you like

One she had never expected.

*ALEXANDER CARTER.*
