Chapter 2: The Phone Behind the Wall
The ringing continued.
Two phones.
Two places.
One impossible moment.
Maya held her mother’s phone against her chest, frozen beneath the bright auditorium lights.
The audience that had been cheering minutes earlier now sat completely silent.
No one knew whether to move.
No one knew whether to speak.
Marcus was the first person to react.
He stepped toward the sound behind the wall.
“Nia?””
His voice cracked.
“Maya, stay here.””
But Maya didn’t move.
She watched her father walk toward the back of the auditorium, his confusion turning into panic with every step.
Vanessa remained near the exit.
She looked like someone waiting for a door to close.
Maya noticed.
“Why are you standing there?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I’m trying to help.””
“You’re lying.””
“Maya—”
“No.””
Maya held up the phone.
“My mother sent this message because she was afraid.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
Marcus reached the wall.
He pressed his ear against it.
The second phone stopped ringing.
The entire room held its breath.
Then Maya’s phone vibrated.
Another message.
Everyone looked at the screen.
A new message from Nia.
*MAYA, TRUST YOUR FATHER. NOT HER.*
Maya looked at Marcus.
Then at Vanessa.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Maya, listen to me.””
Maya backed away.
“You knew.””
“I knew something was wrong.””
“What was wrong?””
Vanessa looked around the room.
Teachers.
Parents.
Students.
Too many witnesses.
Her voice lowered.
“Not here.””
Maya laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“My mother disappeared during my award ceremony, her phone is in your hand, and you want privacy?””
Marcus turned around.
“What does that mean, Vanessa?””
Vanessa looked at him.
For a moment, she looked guilty.
Then angry.
Then afraid again.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
Marcus stared.
“What didn’t you want to happen?””
Before Vanessa could answer, the lights above the stage flickered.
The auditorium gasped.
Maya looked toward the wall again.
The sound had stopped.
But something else happened.
A small metal door near the side of the auditorium slowly opened.
Everyone saw it.
A door that most people had probably never noticed.
Marcus walked toward it.
“Maya, stay behind me.””
She followed anyway.
Her father pushed the door open.
Inside was darkness.
A narrow maintenance hallway.
Empty.
But on the floor was something that made Maya’s stomach drop.
A small silver bracelet.
Her mother’s bracelet.
The one Maya had given Nia for Mother’s Day.
Marcus picked it up.
His hand shook.
“She was here.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No…”
Maya turned sharply.
“You knew about this hallway.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Marcus looked back at her.
“How long have you known?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
Maya stared.
“From what?””
The question hung in the hallway.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Maya…”
“What?””
He slowly turned the phone around.
The call was from an unknown number.
But the voicemail notification had already appeared.
One new message.
Recorded thirty seconds ago.
Marcus pressed play.
A woman’s voice filled the hallway.
Weak.
Breathing heavily.
But unmistakable.
Nia.
“If you’re hearing this… it means they found the phone.””
Maya covered her mouth.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Vanessa stepped back.
Then Nia continued.
“And Marcus… you need to know the truth about Vanessa.””
The voicemail suddenly cut off.
Everyone stared at Vanessa.
She whispered:
“No…”
May you like
Then the phone displayed one final line.
