Chapter 13: The Son Who Vanished

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nobody touched it.

The name on the screen seemed impossible.

*ALEXANDER CARTER.*

Evelyn stared at it like she was looking at a ghost.

“My son…”

Her voice barely existed.

Maya looked at her.

“You said he disappeared.””

Evelyn couldn’t take her eyes off the phone.

“He did.””

“Then how is he calling?””

No one answered.

The ringing continued.

Finally, Evelyn reached forward.

Her hand shook so badly that she almost dropped the phone.

She pressed answer.

“Alexander?””

For several seconds, there was nothing.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But calm.

“Mom.””

Evelyn collapsed into the nearest chair.

Everyone froze.

Maya watched the woman who had spent the entire night looking fearless finally break apart.

“You’re alive.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“Where have you been?””

Alexander didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Running.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Running from who?””

The voice on the phone became quieter.

“From the same person your mother was running from.””

Nia looked at Maya.

Marcus looked at the floor.

Everyone understood.

The mystery had never been about one person disappearing.

It had been about a secret moving through generations.

Alexander continued.

“Maya, are you there?””

Maya picked up the phone.

“Yes.””

“I’m sorry.””

She frowned.

“Why are you apologizing?””

“Because your life was changed before you were old enough to understand it.””

Maya looked at the bracelet in her hand.

“Tell me what happened.””

A long silence.

Then Alexander spoke.

“Your grandfather wasn’t the one who changed your records.””

Everyone looked at the document.

Maya felt her heartbeat increase.

“Then who was?””

Alexander answered:

“His son.””

Marcus went still.

“My father only had one son.””

Alexander’s voice was quiet.

“No.””

Everyone looked at Marcus.

The color disappeared from his face.

“What are you saying?””

Alexander continued.

“Richard Johnson had another child.””

The room became silent.

Maya looked at her father.

“Dad?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

Nia looked at him.

“Maybe you didn’t.””

Her voice was different.

Like she had feared this possibility.

Alexander continued.

“Your grandfather had two sons. One was Marcus.””

He paused.

“The other was the person who inherited everything your grandfather built.””

Maya whispered:

“Who?””

Alexander said the name.

And this time, everyone heard it clearly.

“Caleb Johnson.””

Marcus stepped backward.

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“You know that name.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“My brother.””

Maya felt numb.

“You had a brother?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Not because he didn’t want to.

Because he looked like someone who had spent years trying to forget.

“I thought he was gone.””

Alexander laughed sadly.

“So did everyone.””

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“What happened to him?””

Alexander answered.

“He disappeared after your grandfather died.””

“Why?””

“Because he took control of the company, the money, and the secrets.””

Daniel spoke for the first time.

“And he wanted the evidence destroyed.””

Alexander continued.

“He believed Maya was the last piece of evidence that could expose him.””

Maya held the phone tighter.

“Why me?””

“Because your birth records showed what happened.””

“What happened?””

Alexander hesitated.

Then said:

“The night you were born, Caleb was at the hospital.””

Maya looked at the bracelet.

“He changed my records.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he needed someone else to take the blame for what happened.””

Marcus whispered:

“What happened that night?””

Alexander became silent.

Then:

“Your mother found out.””

Nia looked down.

“What?””

Alexander continued.

“She discovered Caleb was using the company to hide illegal transfers. She also discovered he had manipulated hospital records to create an alibi.””

Maya stared.

“So my birth was connected to his crime?””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice came through.

A voice Maya had never heard.

But Marcus recognized immediately.

His face changed.

“Caleb.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus put the phone on speaker.

A man laughed softly.

“Little brother.””

Maya felt a chill.

Marcus gripped the phone.

“You’re alive.””

“Disappointed?””

“Where is my daughter?””

A pause.

Then Caleb said:

“I’m closer than you think.””

Nia grabbed Maya’s arm.

“Get away from the windows.””

Everyone moved.

Except Maya.

She stared at the phone.

“Why are you doing this?””

Silence.

Then Caleb answered.

“Because your mother made one mistake.””

“What?””

“She taught you to ask questions.””

The call ended.

At that exact moment, every light in the archive building went out.

May you like

And from somewhere nearby…

a door unlocked.
