Chapter 14: The Last Lie

I couldn’t speak.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my mind was trying to reject what my eyes were seeing.

Calvin Reed.

My mentor.

My father figure.

The man who taught me how to repair my first motorcycle.

The man who told me loyalty mattered more than blood.

He stood in the warehouse like he belonged there.

Because apparently he always had.

“You.””

Calvin smiled sadly.

“I knew this day would come.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

He looked around.

“At some point, you would find everything.””

My fists tightened.

“You were behind this?””

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.””

Calvin sighed.

“I was trying to prevent something worse.””

I laughed.

Everyone had the same excuse.

Everyone hurt people and called it protection.

“You pretended to be me.””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Yes.””

The answer hit harder than I expected.

The photograph.

The fake messages.

The night Elena vanished.

All of it.

“You destroyed my life.””

Calvin looked down.

“I saved your life.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“You stole it.””

Maya moved closer to Elena.

I saw fear in her eyes.

I forced myself to calm down.

Not for him.

For her.

“Why?””

Calvin looked at me.

“Because you were about to expose everything.””

“What everything?””

“The truth about your father.””

Silence.

My father.

A person I barely remembered.

Calvin continued.

“Your father wasn’t killed in an accident.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

“He was investigating Marcus’s company.””

Marcus looked away.

“You knew?””

Calvin nodded.

“I knew everything.””

My anger turned toward Marcus.

“You all knew.””

Marcus finally spoke.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“You ruined people.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I did.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at Maya.

“But I never wanted her hurt.””

I looked at Calvin.

“You did.””

Calvin didn’t deny it.

“I made choices.””

“Choices?””

I stepped forward.

“You made me lose fifteen years with my daughter.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t know what that costs.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Maya walked toward me.

She grabbed my hand.

“Daddy.””

That one word changed everything.

I looked down.

She wasn’t looking at Calvin.

She wasn’t looking at Marcus.

She was looking at me.

“I don’t want everyone fighting.””

I knelt beside her.

“I know.””

“Can we just go home?””

The question destroyed me.

Because I realized something.

All these people had been fighting over secrets.

Over power.

Over fear.

And none of them understood the simplest thing.

A child just wanted her family.

I stood.

“Everyone leaves.””

Calvin frowned.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“This isn’t finished.””

I looked at him.

“It is for me.””

He smiled sadly.

“You think walking away ends it?””

“No.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Truth ends it.””

Then I looked at Calvin.

“And everyone is going to hear it.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“He won’t let that happen.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

A car engine started outside.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“He’s here.””

I turned.

“Who?””

The warehouse doors opened.

A group of investigators entered.

Behind them was a woman holding a folder.

She looked at Marcus.

Then at Calvin.

Then at me.

“My name is Agent Carter.””

She held up the folder.

“We’ve been investigating this network for years.””

Calvin’s face changed.

Impossible.

“You found it.””

She nodded.

“Because someone finally gave us the evidence.””

She looked at me.

“The files from the hidden room.””

My eyes moved to Marcus.

Then Thomas.

Then Raymond.

Someone had planned this.

Someone had waited for this moment.

Agent Carter opened the folder.

“There’s one final piece.””

She looked directly at Calvin.

“The person who started Project Silence.””

Everyone went quiet.

She turned the folder around.

The name was written clearly.

Not Marcus.

Not Calvin.

Someone else.

Someone none of us expected.

My blood froze.

May you like

Because the name belonged to the one person who had been missing from this entire story.

My mother.
