Chapter 4: The Man in the Hallway
The voice behind me was one I hadn’t heard in years.
But I knew it instantly.
Some voices don’t belong to strangers.
They belong to memories.
I turned slowly.
Standing in the hospital hallway was Marcus Vale.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
He looked older now. His hair had turned silver at the sides, and the expensive suit he wore replaced the old leather jacket he used to carry. But the smile was the same.
Cold.
Controlled.
The smile of a man who always knew something everyone else didn’t.
“Elena,” Marcus said calmly.
“You really made this harder than it needed to be.””
My hand tightened.
Maya moved closer to her mother.
Elena’s face lost all color.
“Marcus.””
The way she said his name told me everything.
Not surprise.
Fear.
I stepped between him and the bed.
“You.””
Marcus looked at me.
A small smile formed.
“Bear.””
Nobody had called him dangerous when we were younger.
That was the mistake everyone made.
Dangerous people rarely looked dangerous.
Marcus had always been the clean one. The businessman. The man who shook hands, wore expensive watches, and spoke softly.
But I remembered what happened behind closed doors.
I remembered the favors.
The threats disguised as advice.
The way people disappeared after crossing him.
“You know her?”” Marcus asked.
I stared at him.
“You know I do.””
His eyes moved to Elena.
Then to Maya.
The second his gaze landed on the little girl, something changed.
Not much.
Just enough.
But I saw it.
A flash of panic.
“What are you doing here, Marcus?”” Elena asked.
He ignored her.
“You shouldn’t have contacted him.””
My jaw tightened.
“Contacted me?””
Marcus looked at Elena.
“You knew bringing him back would put everyone at risk.””
Elena slowly sat up.
“No. You put everyone at risk fifteen years ago.””
The hallway suddenly felt smaller.
Maya looked between us.
She didn’t understand the words.
But she understood the fear.
I turned toward Elena.
“What is he talking about?””
Marcus answered before she could.
“Bear, you’ve spent fifteen years believing Elena abandoned you.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t.””
“But the truth is more complicated.””
Elena’s voice sharpened.
“Leave.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“You still think you can order people around.””
I stepped forward.
“Try me.””
For the first time, Marcus’s smile disappeared.
The old Marcus returned.
The one I remembered.
The one who didn’t need to raise his voice because everyone already knew what he was capable of.
“You should ask her why she really disappeared.””
I looked at Elena.
She looked away.
That hurt more than anything Marcus said.
Because it meant there was something she still hadn’t told me.
Marcus adjusted his jacket.
“I’ll give you both time.””
He turned.
Then stopped.
Without looking back, he said:
“Bear, when she tells you the truth, ask her one question.””
I watched him walk away.
“What question?””
Marcus glanced over his shoulder.
“Ask her why she hid your daughter from you.””
The hallway went silent.
My heart stopped.
I turned toward Elena.
She looked like she had been waiting fifteen years for this exact moment.
Maya stared at me.
Confused.
Scared.
“Mommy?””
Elena closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
May you like
And I whispered the only words I could find.
“My daughter?””
