Chapter 5: The Truth Elena Carried

The room felt like it had lost all air.

I looked at Elena.

Then at Maya.

Then back at Elena.

“No.””

The word escaped before I even understood why.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Elena didn’t argue.

She didn’t deny it.

That scared me more.

“Bear…”

I stood up.

“Don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“Don’t say my name like everything is normal.””

Maya looked at me.

Her small hands gripped the edge of the blanket.

“Am I in trouble?””

That question broke something inside me.

I immediately softened.

“No.””

I knelt beside her.

“You’re not in trouble.””

“Then why are you upset?””

I looked at her face.

The shape of her eyes.

The way she tilted her head when she was confused.

Little pieces of a life I never knew existed.

I stood slowly.

“Elena.””

She wiped her tears.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I was scared.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried years of pain.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, my motorcycle sat where I left it.

The blue chalk drawing was still visible.

A little girl had drawn my bike because she knew something I didn’t.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years I could never get back.

“You let me believe you were gone.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I turned around.

“Protect me?””

My voice rose.

“You took my child away from me.””

Maya flinched.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“I’m sorry.””

She nodded.

But she looked hurt.

Elena noticed.

“Bear, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“Then explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“After Marcus found out I was pregnant, everything changed.””

My expression hardened.

“Marcus?””

She nodded.

“He knew about you and me. He knew we were leaving.””

“Why would he care?””

“Because of what you knew.””

I frowned.

“What did I know?””

Elena looked at the paper beside her.

“That’s what I was trying to tell you.””

She unfolded it.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

She handed it to me.

I read the first line.

My hands went cold.

It was a letter.

My handwriting.

My signature.

But I had never written it.

“What is this?””

Elena whispered:

“A warning.””

I read the words again.

A message telling someone to stop.

A message mentioning Marcus.

A message that could destroy everything he built.

“I don’t remember writing this.””

“Because you didn’t.””

I looked up.

“What?””

Elena’s eyes filled with fear.

“Someone used your name.””

The pieces started connecting.

The lies.

The disappearance.

The silence.

Marcus showing up the moment Elena found me.

“He framed me.””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

A knock came at the door.

We both froze.

A hospital security guard stood outside.

“Excuse me. Are you Bear?””

I stepped closer.

“Yes.””

The guard held up an envelope.

“This was left for you at the front desk.””

I took it.

There was no name.

No address.

Only one word written on the front.

BEAR.

My stomach tightened.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

Elena.

Me.

And a baby.

On the back were six words.

May you like

Six words that made Elena cover her mouth.

“She was never supposed to survive.””
