Chapter 8: The Hidden Room

I stared at the newspaper clipping.

Marcus Vale.

Alive.

The same man who had destroyed my life.

The same man who stood in that hospital hallway wearing a perfect suit and pretending he had all the answers.

“How?””

Raymond looked exhausted.

“Because Marcus is good at disappearing.””

I folded the newspaper.

“No one disappears for fifteen years.””

He gave me a serious look.

“People do when they have money, power, and enough people afraid to speak.””

I looked back at the hospital.

Elena.

Maya.

My family.

A family I didn’t know existed.

A family someone tried to erase.

“I need the whole story.””

Raymond nodded.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because if Marcus is watching, this is exactly where he expects you to be.””

I looked around.

The hospital.

The cameras.

The people coming and going.

“You think he has people here?””

Raymond didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I walked back inside.

Elena was sitting up when I entered.

Her eyes immediately went to Raymond.

“You found him.””

I stopped.

“You knew he was here?””

Elena looked down.

“Yes.””

The anger returned.

“You all knew.””

“Bear—”

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“Everyone knew pieces of my life except me.””

Maya looked between us.

I lowered my voice.

“Not in front of her.””

Elena nodded.

Raymond stepped inside and closed the door.

“We don’t have much time.””

Elena looked at him.

“Did you tell him?””

“Some.””

She closed her eyes.

“He needs to know everything.””

I stared at her.

“Then tell me.””

The room became quiet.

Elena touched the photograph on the table.

“The night Maya was born, Marcus came to the hospital.””

My face changed.

“He was there?””

She nodded.

“He said if I wanted you alive, I had to disappear.””

I felt my fists tighten.

“He threatened you.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you fight?””

Her eyes met mine.

“I did.””

The answer was immediate.

“I fought every day.””

The pain in her voice stopped me.

“He took my phone. He followed me. He made sure every message I sent disappeared.””

She swallowed.

“When I tried to contact you, someone intercepted it.””

I looked at Raymond.

“You?””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

That silence bothered me.

Because it meant the answer was worse than I expected.

Elena reached for my hand.

“I wanted you to know.””

I looked down at her fingers.

“How long did you think it would take?””

She whispered:

“I never stopped hoping.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Raymond walked toward the window.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The evidence Marcus wanted destroyed.””

Elena’s face changed.

“Raymond.””

“He deserves to know.””

“What evidence?””

Raymond looked at me.

“The original files.””

I frowned.

“Original files of what?””

“Everything.””

He opened his jacket.

Inside was a small key.

Old.

Metal.

Worn.

“Marcus built his empire by hiding information.””

He placed it on the table.

“This key opens the one thing he couldn’t destroy.””

I picked it up.

“What is it?””

“A room.””

I looked at him.

“Where?””

Raymond hesitated.

“Your old garage.””

My eyes narrowed.

“My garage burned down.””

“No.””

Raymond shook his head.

“Everyone thought it did.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

“The fire was fake.””

Elena whispered:

“Marcus wanted everyone to believe it was gone.””

I looked at the key.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years of believing everything was lost.

And now I was finding out pieces of my life had been hidden from me.

Maya walked closer.

“What’s a garage?””

I looked at her.

“A place where I fixed bikes.””

She smiled.

“Like your motorcycle?””

I nodded.

“Exactly.””

She looked happy.

For some reason, that hurt.

Because I realized I had missed every small moment.

Her first steps.

Her first words.

Her childhood.

All because someone decided I didn’t deserve to know.

A loud crash echoed from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

The nurse rushed past the door.

Then the lights flickered.

Raymond immediately stood.

“We have to move.””

Elena looked frightened.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

I grabbed the key.

“What happened?””

Raymond looked toward the hallway.

“Someone found us.””

A hospital alarm began ringing.

People started moving.

Doctors shouted.

And through the glass doors, I saw a man standing outside.

Watching.

Waiting.

Raymond’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

May you like

He whispered:

“The man who was supposed to be dead.””
