Chapter 3: The Secret Written on Paper

I didn’t hear the machines anymore.

I didn’t hear the footsteps outside the room.

I only heard one sentence.

You need to know who Maya’s father is.

For fifteen years, I had imagined a thousand reasons why Elena disappeared.

None of them prepared me for this.

I stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Elena looked exhausted.

Not just physically.

Like she had carried something heavy for years.

“Close the door.””

I didn’t move.

“Elena.””

“Please.””

Something in her voice made me listen.

I closed the hospital room door.

She watched me carefully.

“You look exactly the same.””

I almost laughed.

“No, I don’t.””

“You do.””

“My hair is gone.””

A tiny smile appeared on her face.

“Your attitude isn’t.””

For one second, I saw the woman I remembered.

Then the pain returned.

I sat in the chair beside her bed.

“Where did you go?””

Her smile disappeared.

“That’s not the first question you should ask.””

“It is the only question I’ve had for fifteen years.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“Do you know what happened to me after you vanished?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t know what it’s like to wake up every morning wondering if someone you love is dead or just decided you weren’t worth staying for.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I never stopped loving you.””

I looked away.

“Then why did you leave?””

The room became silent.

Finally, she reached toward the table.

There was a folded piece of paper beside her patient bracelet.

She picked it up.

“My entire life changed the night I disappeared.””

I stared at the paper.

“What is that?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

She looked directly at me.

“Proof that I didn’t leave you.””

My hands tightened.

“Then why?””

Before she could answer, the door opened.

Maya stood there with the nurse behind her.

“Sorry,” Maya said softly.

“I wanted to see mommy.””

Elena’s expression changed instantly.

The anger disappeared.

Only love remained.

Maya ran to the bed.

Elena held her hand.

And I watched.

Something about the way they looked at each other felt familiar.

Too familiar.

The nurse quietly stepped away.

I looked at Elena.

“Maya.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“She’s your daughter.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“Then why did you bring me here?””

Elena looked at the little girl.

Then back at me.

“Because she asked about you.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

Her fingers shook as she held the paper.

“Because the person who caused me to disappear knew one day you would find us.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Elena opened her mouth.

A sudden alarm sounded from the hallway.

The nurse rushed past the door.

Doctors moved quickly.

The moment broke.

Elena looked terrified.

Not because of the noise.

Because of what she hadn’t told me.

I stood.

“Elena, finish your sentence.””

She grabbed my wrist.

Her grip was weak.

But desperate.

“Bear, listen to me.””

I looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Who made you disappear?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

And she whispered one name.

A name I never expected.

A name that belonged to someone from my own past.

Before she could say anything else, the hospital lights flickered.

The room door slowly opened.

May you like

And someone standing in the hallway said:

“Bear… you were never supposed to find her.””
