Chapter 7: The Stranger Who Knew My Past

The hospital doors opened slowly.

I stepped outside with my phone still in my hand.

The bright morning sunlight hit my face, but it didn’t feel warm anymore.

Everything had changed.

Twenty minutes ago, I was just a man parking his motorcycle outside a hospital.

Now I was standing between fifteen years of unanswered questions and a truth that everyone seemed determined to hide from me.

The stranger’s words replayed in my head.

The man who watched Marcus take your daughter away.

I scanned the ambulance lane.

Nothing.

No footsteps.

No person waiting.

Only my motorcycle, the concrete sidewalk, and the blue chalk drawing Maya had made.

I walked closer to it.

The little motorcycle stared back at me.

A child’s drawing.

A child’s memory.

My memory.

A shadow moved near the parking area.

I turned immediately.

“Who’s there?””

A man stepped out from behind a parked ambulance.

Older.

Late sixties.

Gray hair.

A worn jacket.

But the eyes were what stopped me.

I knew those eyes.

“Bear.””

My entire body went still.

“Raymond?””

The old man nodded.

For a second, I forgot how to react.

Raymond Cole had been one of my closest friends when I was younger. Before the club. Before the reputation. Before everything became complicated.

Then one night, he disappeared.

Just like Elena.

Just like so many pieces of my old life.

“You’re alive.””

His expression was painful.

“So are you.””

I stepped toward him.

“You knew?””

Raymond looked down.

“I knew enough.””

“Enough?””

My voice hardened.

“You knew Elena was alive?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I grabbed the front of his jacket.

“Fifteen years, Raymond.””

He didn’t fight back.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My grip tightened.

“You watched me destroy myself looking for her.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

I let go.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I needed answers more than I needed anger.

“Start talking.””

Raymond looked toward the hospital doors.

“She’s awake?””

“Yes.””

“And Maya?””

I froze.

“You know her name?””

Raymond closed his eyes.

“I knew about the child.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

“I knew Marcus was planning something.””

“What was he planning?””

Raymond looked at me.

“To erase you.””

The words sounded impossible.

But after everything I had seen, impossible was becoming normal.

“Explain.””

Raymond took a breath.

“Marcus wasn’t afraid of your motorcycle club. He wasn’t afraid of your reputation.””

“Then what was he afraid of?””

“You.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

“You were the only person who knew what he was really doing.””

I shook my head.

“I didn’t know anything.””

“Yes, you did.””

Raymond looked around before lowering his voice.

“Remember the night you found those records?””

My memory flashed.

A warehouse.

Old documents.

Marcus’s company name.

Numbers that didn’t make sense.

I remembered.

“I thought it was nothing.””

“It wasn’t.””

Raymond stepped closer.

“You found proof Marcus was moving money through fake companies.””

My jaw tightened.

“And he wanted me quiet.””

“He wanted you gone.””

The sunlight suddenly felt colder.

“So he took Elena.””

Raymond looked away.

“He took everyone connected to you.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Before Raymond could answer, the hospital doors opened.

Maya stood there.

The nurse was behind her.

“Bear?””

I immediately changed.

I couldn’t let her see the anger.

I couldn’t let a seven-year-old carry the weight of adult secrets.

I walked over.

“What are you doing outside?””

Maya held something in her hand.

A small piece of blue chalk.

“Mommy said you needed this.””

I looked at it.

“Why?””

Maya shrugged.

“She said you used to draw with her.””

My heart stopped.

I looked toward the hospital room.

Elena remembered.

Things I forgot.

Things I buried.

Maya looked up at me.

“Are you going to leave again?””

The question hit harder than any threat.

I knelt down.

“No.””

She studied my face.

“Promise?””

I didn’t answer quickly.

Because promises were dangerous.

Promises were what people broke.

But then I looked at her.

At the little girl who waited outside a hospital drawing my motorcycle.

“I promise.””

Maya smiled slightly.

Then she whispered:

“Good.””

I stood.

Raymond was watching me.

He looked sad.

“She’s the reason Elena survived.””

I turned.

“What?””

Raymond looked toward the hospital.

“But she’s also the reason Marcus will never stop looking.””

A chill moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

Raymond reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a folded newspaper clipping.

He handed it to me.

The headline was old.

But the words were clear.

*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DECLARED MISSING AFTER PRIVATE JET DISAPPEARS.*

Below the headline was a photograph.

A man I recognized.

A man I thought was dead.

Marcus Vale.

But Raymond’s next words made my blood run cold.

“Marcus didn’t disappear fifteen years ago.””

May you like

I looked at him.

“He’s been watching you the entire time.””
