Chapter 6: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

The baby in the picture was tiny.

Wrapped in a pale blanket.

Elena was smiling.

A real smile.

The kind I hadn’t seen in fifteen years.

And beside her was me.

Younger.

Different.

A man who still believed love could protect him from anything.

My fingers shook.

“When was this taken?””

Elena didn’t answer.

She was staring at the message on the back.

“She was never supposed to survive.””

The words sat between us.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

I looked at her.

“Elena.””

She swallowed.

“The night Maya was born…”

She stopped.

I waited.

The old anger was still there.

But something else had replaced it.

Fear.

“What happened?””

Elena looked toward Maya.

The little girl was sitting quietly, watching us.

“I was leaving the city.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus found out about the baby.””

I clenched my fists.

“You said he knew you were pregnant.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“He told me if I stayed with you, you would die.””

Silence.

“He threatened me?””

She nodded.

“He had people everywhere.””

I shook my head.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I tried.””

Her voice broke.

“I called you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Three times.””

My face changed.

“I never got those calls.””

“I know.””

She looked at the floor.

“That was the point.””

The room became silent again.

Someone had been between us.

Someone had controlled the information.

Someone had built a wall.

Marcus.

I looked at Maya.

“She knew about me?””

Elena nodded.

“I never stopped talking about you.””

Maya looked up.

“Mommy said you fixed motorcycles and helped people.””

My throat tightened.

“She told you that?””

“All the time.””

I looked away.

Because somehow, after all these years, the idea that Elena kept a piece of me alive hurt more than losing it.

The door opened.

A nurse stepped inside.

“Sorry to interrupt.””

Everyone looked over.

The nurse held a tablet.

“Mr. Bear, there’s someone asking for you downstairs.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

The nurse hesitated.

“He wouldn’t give a name.””

My instincts immediately changed.

The years on the streets taught me one thing.

Never ignore a warning.

“Elena, stay here.””

Her face turned pale.

“No.””

“What?””

“Don’t go alone.””

I looked at her.

“You know who it is?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Then she looked at the photograph.

“But I know what it means.””

I stepped closer.

“What does it mean?””

Elena stared at me.

“It means Marcus isn’t the only person who knows the truth.””

My phone vibrated.

A number appeared on the screen.

Unknown.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a voice spoke.

An older voice.

A familiar voice.

“Bear.””

My blood ran cold.

I knew that voice.

Someone I thought was gone.

Someone connected to everything.

“Who is this?””

The voice paused.

Then whispered:

“The man who watched Marcus take your daughter away.””

I couldn’t move.

The voice continued.

“And if you want to know what really happened fifteen years ago…”

A pause.

A long one.

“…you need to come outside before Elena tells you the part she’s still hiding.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Elena watched my face.

She already knew.

“What did they say?””

I looked toward the hospital doors.

Then back at her.

And for the first time since seeing her again, I wondered if finding Elena had only been the beginning.

May you like

Because someone else had been waiting.

And they knew a secret Elena still refused to reveal.
