Chapter 9: The Man Who Came Back
The hallway exploded into chaos.
Nurses moved quickly.
Patients were pushed away from the entrance.
Security guards rushed toward the lobby.
But I wasn’t looking at any of them.
I was looking at the man standing outside.
Through the glass.
Watching.
Waiting.
Raymond looked like he had seen a ghost.
“Who is that?””
I grabbed his shoulder.
“Answer me.””
His eyes stayed locked on the figure outside.
“Thomas Vale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the fear in Raymond’s voice meant everything.
“Who is Thomas Vale?””
Raymond swallowed.
“Marcus’s older brother.””
I stared.
“Older brother?””
“He died eighteen years ago.””
I looked back at the man.
The man who was very clearly alive.
“Then why is he standing outside?””
Raymond didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Or because he didn’t want to.
The hospital doors opened.
The man stepped inside.
He moved slowly.
Confidently.
Like he owned the building.
He was older than Marcus.
His hair was completely gray.
His face carried deep lines.
But his eyes were sharp.
Focused.
He looked directly at me.
Not Elena.
Not Maya.
Me.
“Bear.””
The way he said my name made my stomach tighten.
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man stopped.
“Someone who tried to keep you alive.””
I laughed once.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His expression didn’t change.
“Because it’s true.””
I moved closer.
“Then why did everyone let me believe Elena was gone?””
Thomas looked toward Elena.
“She wanted you protected.””
I turned.
“From what?””
Thomas looked back at me.
“From the same people who are still trying to kill her.””
Maya grabbed Elena’s hand.
The room changed instantly.
No matter how angry I was, one thing was clear.
The people around me had secrets.
And those secrets were dangerous.
Thomas noticed Maya.
His face softened.
Only slightly.
“She looks like her mother.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You know her?””
“I knew her before she knew herself.””
Elena’s voice cut through the room.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
Thomas looked at her.
“I’m not.””
The honesty surprised me.
Elena stared at him.
“You helped him.””
Thomas looked away.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I stepped closer.
“You worked with Marcus.””
“I did.””
“And now?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Now I’m trying to undo what I helped create.””
I wanted to believe him.
But I had spent fifteen years learning one lesson.
Trust was expensive.
And everyone wanted to pay with someone else’s pain.
“Why should I believe you?””
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small recorder.
He placed it on the table.
“Because this is Marcus’s voice.””
Nobody moved.
I stared at the recorder.
“What’s on it?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Thomas looked at Maya.
Then Elena.
Then me.
“Proof that Marcus planned everything.””
Elena’s face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
Thomas looked at her.
“From the place you thought nobody could find.””
Raymond stepped forward.
“The garage.””
Thomas nodded.
My hand tightened around the key.
“The hidden room.””
“Yes.””
A thousand thoughts rushed through my head.
The garage.
The fire.
The missing files.
Everything connected.
Thomas looked at me.
“Bear, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Marcus didn’t just want Elena gone.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
“He wanted Maya gone too.””
Elena closed her eyes.
Maya looked confused.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew how to explain something so cruel to a child.
I looked at Thomas.
“Why?””
Thomas’s expression turned serious.
“Because Maya is the only person who can prove Marcus’s biggest lie.””
The room went silent.
“What lie?””
Thomas reached for the recorder.
Before he could press play, the hospital doors opened again.
A security guard walked in.
“Mr. Bear?””
I turned.
“Yes?””
The guard held a small envelope.
“This was left outside your motorcycle.””
My heart sank.
I took it.
No name.
No address.
Only one sentence written on the front.
*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST BURIED.*
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Not an old one.
A new one.
Taken minutes ago.
It showed me standing outside the hospital.
With Maya.
With Elena.
And in the background…
Someone had been watching us.
Thomas looked at the picture.
His face changed.
“Bear.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
May you like
He whispered:
“Marcus knows you found them.””
