Chapter 1: The Girl Walking Down the Aisle
“Daddy… please don’t marry her!””
The words shattered the wedding before the music even finished playing.
I remember the exact sound of the room going silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence where a thousand people stop breathing at the same time.
I was standing beneath crystal chandeliers in the middle of the most expensive ballroom I had ever stepped into, wearing a black tuxedo I had spent months choosing, waiting for the woman I loved to walk toward me.
Instead, a little girl I had never seen before walked down the aisle barefoot.
She was crying.
Her dirty light-blue dress was wrinkled, her small hands trembling as she carried a baby wrapped in a cream-colored dress. Her braided hair was slightly undone, and every step looked like it took everything she had.
Nobody moved.
Nobody knew what to do.
Except her.
She kept walking.
Straight toward me.
My first thought was that someone had made a terrible mistake.
A child had somehow wandered into a wedding.
Maybe she was lost.
Maybe someone was looking for her.
Maybe—
Then she looked directly into my eyes.
And she said it again.
“Daddy… please don’t marry her.””
My heart stopped.
I looked around the ballroom, waiting for someone to laugh, someone to explain, someone to tell me this was some strange misunderstanding.
Nobody did.
The guests stared at me.
My best man Marcus looked completely confused.
My mother covered her mouth.
And Simone, the woman standing across from me in a breathtaking white wedding gown, suddenly looked like she had seen a ghost.
I stepped forward slowly.
The little girl tightened her arms around the baby.
“Hey,” I said softly.
“What’s your name?””
She swallowed hard.
“Ava.””
“Ava,” I repeated.
“Who are you?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You know who I am.””
The words hit me harder than they should have.
Because there was something familiar about her face.
Not something I recognized.
Something I felt.
I crouched down so we were at the same height.
“What did you call me?””
Her bottom lip shook.
“Daddy.””
The entire ballroom seemed to tilt.
I looked at the baby in her arms.
A little girl.
Maybe one year old.
Her tiny fingers held onto Ava’s dress while she stared at me with wide, innocent eyes.
I had no idea who these children were.
But something inside me was already terrified of the answer.
“Ava,” I whispered, “I think there’s been a mistake.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“Mom said you would say that.””
A cold feeling moved through my chest.
“What did your mom tell you?””
Before Ava could answer, Simone stepped forward.
Her heels clicked against the marble floor.
“Darius,” she said sharply.
I turned.
Her expression was no longer the happy, nervous smile she had worn moments earlier.
It was fear.
Pure fear.
“Don’t listen to her.””
I stared at Simone.
“What is happening?””
She looked toward the wedding planner near the entrance.
Then toward security.
“Get them out.””
My stomach dropped.
“Simone?””
“She’s causing a scene.””
Ava immediately stepped backward.
The baby started crying.
And something in me changed.
I didn’t know this little girl.
I didn’t know that baby.
But I knew one thing.
They were scared.
I stood up.
“No.””
Simone blinked.
“What?””
I moved between her and the children.
“No one touches them.””
The guests began whispering.
The perfect wedding picture was falling apart in front of everyone.
Simone lowered her voice.
“Darius, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Simone always had an answer.
Always.
For three years, I had loved her because she was confident, honest, and strong.
But standing there, watching her panic, I realized something.
I had never seen her afraid before.
Not like this.
Ava reached inside her little dress.
Her fingers searched for something hidden in the fabric.
Then she pulled out a folded piece of paper.
She held it against her chest.
“Mom told me to give you this.””
The room went quiet again.
Simone’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
It was barely a whisper.
But everyone heard it.
Ava looked at her.
Then at me.
“Mom said you needed to know the truth.””
I reached for the paper.
And before my fingers touched it, Simone moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
“Don’t!””
Her voice echoed through the ballroom.
Everyone froze.
I looked at the woman I was supposed to marry.
The woman I trusted.
The woman who had just begged me not to open a piece of paper from a seven-year-old girl.
And for the first time that day…
I wondered what she was hiding.
I took the document from Ava’s hand.
And unfolded it.
The first line was enough to make my hands go cold.
PATERNITY CONFIRMATION — DARIUS COLE.
I stopped breathing.
Because beneath those words was a name.
May you like
A name I had never seen before.
And a truth that was about to destroy everything I thought I knew.
