Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Lie
Nobody moved.
The entire ballroom waited for a seven-year-old girl to explain the secret that had just stopped a grown woman in her tracks.
Ava looked terrified.
She looked at me.
Then at Lena.
Then at Simone.
“I wasn’t supposed to say.””
My heart broke.
I crouched down.
“Hey.””
She looked at me.
“You’re not in trouble.””
Her eyes filled.
“I don’t want anyone to be mad.””
I shook my head.
“Tell the truth.””
She hugged Mia closer.
“Mom said secrets make people hurt.””
The words were simple.
But they carried years behind them.
I looked at Lena.
She nodded slowly.
“She’s right.””
Simone’s face tightened.
“Lena, don’t.””
Lena ignored her.
“She found out before I did.””
I frowned.
“Found out what?””
Lena looked at me.
“The reason Simone wanted you away from Ava.””
I waited.
“She thought you would leave her.””
I almost laughed.
Because we had already established that.
But Lena continued.
“She was right about one thing.””
The room became quiet.
“She knew if you found out about Ava, your entire life would change.””
I looked at Simone.
“Yes.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“Yes, it would.””
I stepped closer.
“Because she’s my daughter.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The words hit me.
Not because they surprised me.
Because they confirmed something I didn’t want to believe.
She had always known.
She had looked at me every day.
Held my hand.
Said she loved me.
While knowing I had a child somewhere in the world.
“Do you understand what you took from me?””
My voice cracked.
Simone looked devastated.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
I pointed toward Ava.
“You took birthdays.””
I pointed toward Mia.
“You took first steps.””
My voice grew louder.
“You took every moment I was supposed to have with them.””
Tears ran down Simone’s face.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You can’t fix time.””
That sentence silenced the room.
Because everyone knew it was true.
Ava looked at me sadly.
“I used to ask Mom what my dad looked like.””
My throat tightened.
“What did she say?””
Ava looked down.
“She said you were probably happy without us.””
I felt anger rise.
Not the kind that made me want to scream.
The kind that made my entire body go cold.
I looked at Simone.
“You told her that?””
Simone shook her head.
“I was wrong.””
“You were cruel.””
She flinched.
I regretted the harshness for one second.
Then I looked at Ava.
And the regret disappeared.
Lena stepped forward.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She glanced at Simone.
“She didn’t only pay me to leave.””
My stomach dropped.
“What else?””
Lena took a deep breath.
“She asked me to sign an agreement.””
“What agreement?””
“She wanted legal proof that I would never contact you again.””
The room erupted.
Marcus whispered, “Darius…”
I stared at Simone.
“Did you really try to erase my daughter from my life?””
Simone started crying harder.
“No.””
“Then what was it?””
She looked at me.
“I was trying to save our future.””
I shook my head.
“You destroyed it.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then something unexpected happened.
Mia reached toward me.
Her tiny hand opened.
A small movement.
Nothing dramatic.
But it broke me.
Because she didn’t know me.
She didn’t know my name.
She didn’t know I had missed a year of her life.
She just saw me.
And reached.
I slowly stepped closer.
“Can I?””
I looked at Ava.
She nodded.
I carefully touched Mia’s little hand.
She grabbed my finger.
And I felt something I couldn’t explain.
A connection.
A piece of myself that had been missing.
Ava watched.
“Does that mean you believe us?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“But I need to know everything.””
Lena nodded.
“You deserve that.””
I looked at the document still in Simone’s hand.
“Then why are you afraid of me reading it?””
Simone stared at the paper.
Her entire body shook.
“Because it proves something.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
And the answer came out like a confession.
“I knew about Ava before she was born.””
My blood went cold.
The guests gasped.
Lena closed her eyes.
And suddenly the timeline changed.
Because if Simone knew before Ava was born…
Then this wasn’t just a secret.
It was a plan.
I stepped toward her.
“How?””
Simone couldn’t answer.
She looked at the paper.
Then at Ava.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Because I was there the night your daughter was born.””
