Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The words stayed in the air.
Because nobody understood them.
Not even me.
“What does that mean?””
My voice came out colder than I expected.
Simone looked like she wanted to run.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she wanted to disappear from the room and escape the consequences waiting behind her.
But there was nowhere to hide.
Not anymore.
The wedding guests watched every second.
The cameras that had been recording our perfect day were still pointed at us.
Ava stood beside me.
Holding baby Mia.
And for the first time, I realized how strange this moment must have looked.
A groom in a tuxedo.
A bride in a wedding gown.
A little girl crying between them.
A baby who might be mine.
A document that had destroyed a future I thought was guaranteed.
“Darius,” Simone whispered.
I looked at her.
“Who is Mia?””
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
Fear.
Pain.
“She’s…”
Simone stopped.
Ava answered for her.
“She’s my sister.””
The room went still.
I looked at the baby.
My breathing became heavier.
“Your sister?””
Ava nodded.
“Yes.””
“How old is she?””
“One.””
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Seven years.
Ava had lived seven years without me knowing.
And this baby had spent her first year in the world without me knowing either.
Two birthdays.
Two childhoods.
Two lives I had missed.
I opened my eyes.
“Where is your mother?””
Ava looked down.
“She couldn’t come.””
“Why?””
Her small fingers tightened around Mia’s blanket.
“She said if she came, Simone would try to stop her.””
Simone immediately shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Ava looked at her.
“You told her to stay away.””
“I never said that.””
“You did.””
Ava’s voice became stronger.
“You told Mom nobody would believe her.””
Simone’s face turned pale.
I stared at her.
“Did you say that?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
I stepped back.
I felt like I was standing in a stranger’s life.
A beautiful ballroom.
A beautiful bride.
A beautiful lie.
“Why?””
The question came quietly.
Maybe because I didn’t have the strength to yell anymore.
“Why would you do this?””
Simone wiped her face.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at me.
“Losing you.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.
“You thought hiding my children would keep me?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She looked at Ava.
Then Mia.
Then me.
“I made a mistake.””
Ava immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She hugged Mia tighter.
“You made Mom cry.””
Simone flinched.
“You don’t understand.””
Ava’s eyes filled with tears.
“I understand.””
The little girl looked up at me.
“She waited for you.””
That sentence hurt more than anything else.
Because I knew what waiting felt like.
I knew what it felt like to wonder why someone didn’t show up.
And suddenly, every missed birthday, every holiday, every moment I should have been there became a weight pressing down on me.
I turned back to Simone.
“Did you pay her?””
She didn’t answer.
“Simone.””
Her shoulders dropped.
“Yes.””
A wave of anger moved through the room.
People whispered.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Darius…”
I raised my hand.
Not because I was calm.
Because I wasn’t.
I was trying not to break.
“How much?””
Simone looked ashamed.
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It matters to me.””
She looked at the floor.
“I gave her money to leave town.””
The words hit like a punch.
Ava started crying.
“She didn’t want to leave.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“I thought I was protecting us.””
I laughed softly.
“Us?””
I looked at the little girl beside me.
“Do you hear yourself?””
A tear fell from Simone’s eye.
“I loved you.””
“And you decided I didn’t deserve the truth?””
She had no answer.
The silence became unbearable.
Then suddenly, the ballroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
A Black woman wearing a simple gray coat, her face pale, her eyes fixed on Ava.
Ava froze.
“Mom?””
My entire body went cold.
Because I realized something.
The woman everyone had been talking about…
The woman whose name had been hidden for years…
Was standing at the entrance.
And she wasn’t looking at Simone.
She was looking at me.
“Darius Cole?””
I stared at her.
“Yes.””
Her hands trembled.
Then she slowly lifted a second folded document.
“I came because you deserve the rest of the truth.””
Simone took a step backward.
“No…”
The woman looked at her.
“You should have told him.””
I felt my heartbeat pounding.
Ava moved closer to me.
The baby began crying.
May you like
And the woman holding the second document whispered words that changed everything.
“Darius… Ava is not the only thing Simone kept from you.””
